A trip that could have taken years by boat took them only a week. There would be reports of a line of strange storms and heavy winds whipping the sea into a frenzy in the east, but that's what happened when a thunderbird took to the skies and was in a hurry.
The odds of anyone suspecting a thunderbird as the culprit were slim to none. They were supposed to be extinct.
The culprit causing a few captains serious headaches swooped down from a cloudy sky and landed in a field a couple furlongs north of the capital. He folded his black-blue wings and lowered his neck so his rider could dismount.
"Nice landing, Phaen!" she praised, landing the small jump with a practiced bounce that eased the impact on her knees.
Of course it was, he answered with his typical arrogance. Phaen shook out his feathers and then looked at the distant city. You will be safe, wren?
"Of course I will," she said, mimicking the thunderbird's arrogance. He gave her a disapproving look and she laughed. "I promise, I'll be fine. I'm just going to get me a room and then explore a bit. I'll call for you if I get in trouble."
On your honor, he told her firmly. I hunt. Clear skies, wren.
"Clear skies, Phaen."
