Game Rules
1. No harassment of any kind This includes but is not limited to bullying, sexual harassment, name-calling, stalking, and pestering when asked to be left alone---IC & OOC. Respect your fellow players, staff, and yourself! a. Do not clone other's names, make family/clan names without permission, or cause unnecessary ooc drama.
2. All races and classes are allowed in Tyran with the following in mind. a. That a race/class cannot be a copyrighted property that you haven’t received express written permission to use from the copyright holder. b. The race/class cannot belong to another RPG as a unique creation of that game unless that game owner has given you written permission to use it elsewhere. c. Gods cannot be played by PCs (Player Characters) except for the Admin, who use their Gods for the purpose of inspiring play and entertainment. Admin are not allowed to god-mode or abuse their IC powers to pick favourites.
- Players are welcome to mention NPC Gods outside of the Tyran pantheon, so long as they recognize that the God has no influence on Tyran’s lands or people outside of private storylines between players.
- Demi-gods are special characters given to those who helped influence the game. Past gods may claim demi-god status if they wish... This also extends to past demi-gods.
- Ghost characters may be played with permission as long as the character has not passed the 3 resurrection rule. Ghost characters cannot partake in events, do battles, have rank, get married, or have children. For further information on ghost characters, please speak to a mod.
3. All storylines and play are allowed since this is a freeform game, with the following in mind: We are a PG 13 game! a. Sexual Content Example: They got undressed and the curtain closed. OKAY! Going into detail about sexual body parts? NOT OKAY!
- No rape storylines allowed in current tense/active play. Some characters have mentioned 'bad pasts' in their history, these things are fine. However, please do not bring this into current play.
- No sexual storylines with characters that are younger than 18. Yes, we know medieval times had women having children around 14… but new age laws still apply and sexual storylines with characters younger than 18 could not only be disturbing for some readers but could get you into trouble.
- No sexual storylines of ANY KIND in the public chat or forums.
- We do allow Master/slave RPs here, but again... be respectful and remember we are PG13!!
- While one can say they are walking around naked, let's not go into detail.....
b. Graphic Example: Stating someone cut their arm off? OKAY! Stating the graphic details of limbs and how the arm got cut off? NOT OKAY
- We do not allow trigger posts in Tyran. Trigger posts are topics of extreme violence and abuse. If you're questioning on what content can be allowed, ask an admin, but f you have to ask it's probably not allowed.
- Details about abuse should be kept to a minimum. Though it is something that can happen, we would like to keep people from going into too many details.
- Since Tyran does have battles, we encourage both sides to respect limits: players who are sensitive should avoid reading & writing battle scenes and those who aren't should add warnings to their posts.
c. Language
- If possible, please try to limit swearing as a way for a character to express emotion IC. An occasional swear word here in there in either IC or OOC is fine, but admin will ask you to tone back at their own discretion. Also... just don't swear at people. It's rude.
- Swear words may not be used in a sexual manner. Especially the f-bomb. Just don't.
- Words you will not get in trouble for saying: ass, shit, and damn.
[/font][/ul] 4. No OOC in the #open-rp channel. (discord rule) All out of character conversations must be held in #ooc. All OOC content found will be deleted if posted in #open-rp.
5. Marriage a. Your marriages needs to be registered here to be recognized: Registry b. Characters must be married by a God, or that God’s priests. It will be recorded on the forum. c. Both players must agree to a marriage (even if the characters don’t.) Marriage is allowed for all characters/races/genders.
6. Pregnancy/Birth/Children a. Births need to be registered here to be recognized: Registry b. Pregnancy can only happen if both players/parents agree to it. Under no circumstance can one character get the other character pregnant against that player’s will. c. Pregnancy will last at minimum 2 weeks. After that, it is up to the players involved in how long it lasts. d. We request that characters do not terminate pregnancies. e. Children born can age 1 year every 2 weeks of real time. You’re welcome to age your child slower than that, but a child cannot age faster than that except under very rare and special circumstances with permission granted by the Admin at the player’s request. f. The child(ren) of players belong to BOTH players equally. It is up to YOU as the players to make agreements on who will play those characters or have control over them. However, if there are disputes later, it is important that you know we will tell you that permission belongs to both. You both agreed to make the character, and you thus both have rights/control of it. Work it out yourselves. g. Children under the age of 13 are not allowed to participate in battles or to be attacked/abused/etc.
7. Nulling In Tyran you are allowed to request other players to acknowledge a null on your own characters/storylines. However, we will not enforce this on any other players if they don’t choose to comply. It's polite of people to oblige the request, but it's not right to force other players to have to change their character’s storylines or histories just because you want to null something. The only nulls that will be forced on people are ones done by the Admin, which will be extremely rare (if ever.) Most players are knowledgeable and talented enough to adjust on their own when someone disappears or something happens.
8. Death Characters CAN die. This happens in a few ways. a. A storyline death, done only with the permission of the player. b. A Death Match duel, where it's acknowledged at the start that only one of the two duelists will survive and is overseen by a staff member to confirm it. Regular duels do not count as death, only defeat. It must be clearly stated at the beginning that it is a deathmatch and agreed by both players before starting to count. c. Character suicide, similar to storyline death except that if the Admin feel it was done for OOC reasons or revenge against another player, that character will not be allowed to be resurrected. d. All other deaths will be allowed to have resurrections done by the Gods or their High Priest. Your character gets 3 resurrections allowed performed on them. The 4th time they die, they’re dead permanently, and the nick will be gagged and removed from play. e. In order to keep track of deaths, we also ask that you fill out the Registry as well. You will not get a resurrection if you do not fill this out. There is no timeframe, but after a death, you may not play that character in any shape or form (even as a ghost) for 24 hours.
9. Proboards ToS Please note that *you* are responsible for following proboard's ToS which includes details of no explicit abuse, sexual activities, and drug use. For more information about this, visit: om/tos

RULES OF BATTLE
There are two styles of battles that can happen. Para (the most popular) or Dice. Each of these have different rules and guidelines which will be explained below the rules.
1. Location of Battles All battles in chat should take place in the #arena or events section on the forums. The following are official safe havens in the game. Players CANNOT be attacked in these locations. Other than those locations, anyone can be challenged to a battle or attack someone (besides pregnant beings and children). Wendy's Tavern Temples God blessed lands (see map for locations)
2. Death Match You MUST announce BEFORE the battle starts that this is a death match and both players must agree. Otherwise, it is an ordinary battle where one character will lose. Prizes are determined by the players. Para deathmatches must be judged by at least one staff member (it is recommended that you have three), but the other judges can be players.
**Remember, in death, you must wait 24 hours before playing that character again. **
3. Battling a God Characters are all welcome to battle a god if they wish it but a god cannot die and cannot be replaced in the temple. Furthermore, a god may also send a willing champion to fight for them.
4. Challenger Rule The player who is CHALLENGED is the one who gets to pick the battle style out of fairness.
5. Two Strikes Rule Characters who continue to pester other characters can turn down a challenge once, but if they continue, then they will no longer be allowed to turn down a challenger and must battle. Challenger rule still applies. i.e. Character A constantly harasses* Character B. Character B challenges Character A to a duel. Character A has one chance to officially back down and ignore the challenge. However, if Character A continues to harass Character B, they can no longer turn down the challenge. *We the player are assuming the harassment is IC only and includes situations like trying to stop certain events from happening or hunting certain characters.... etc. If there are OOC issues, please speak to a staff member.
Para (Story/Text)
Para battles are fairly easy, straightforward ways of battle. You simply write out the actions your character is taking in the battle against your opponent. You’ll each do a specified amount of posts, and at the end, a judge will pick a winner. This style of battle is fun because it tells a story of the descriptive battle. Try to be realistic, creative, and entertaining! Before Battle: Agree on 1 or 3 judge(s) to pick a winner at end of battle. Have a staff member present to judge or witness to make it official. Agree on paragraph limit (people on average choose 3 each.) Decide who goes first, or roll a d2 dice (1 is Heads, 2 is Tails.) Begin
During Battle: Describe your attack against the opponent. Describe your reaction to the opponent’s actions toward you. Describe how you defend your opponent’s attacks, and if they hit you or not.
*Keep in mind, always avoiding hits will count against you in judging and is considered god-modding. So pick and choose which actions your opponent does that successfully hit you. In the final paragraph you make, describe your finishing blow. This blow is considered in ‘limbo’ until a winner is decided. The person who wins succeeds at their finishing blow, and the other does not.
After Battle (Judge Phase): As a judge, you get the power to pick the winner. Judges MUST be (especially staff) non-biased, and the combatants did agree to choose you before the battle… so please be fair. Try to use this system for judging, giving 1pt for whoever achieved the task better:
1. Legibility - Part of Para fighting is in how well the fighter writes. It's a writer's battle, and with programs like Word out there to help there's no reason this should be a huge issue. It helps paint a clear picture, making it easier for the reader to understand what's really going on. Though typos happen, and you can have a flawless post, and still not understand what the hell is going on. Either the wording is awkward, or it doesn't match the actions their opponent described in the previous post. While it is a battle, it's also a co-written battle, and that seamless image needs to be carried on from one player to the other. What the char is doing is very important, and the opponent and judges need to be clear about what action is being portrayed. (Consideration for those who have trouble with English not being their first language should be exercised.)
2. Creativity - Originality needs to earn points in a Para-fight. But also...how descriptive are you being? I love it when I know what exactly the char looks like, what weapons they use (more than just 'a sword'), if they're panting, sweating, bleeding, etc. Details! When using magic, how hard is it to use? What was its source? What is it meant to do? This is all part of painting the scene, but Creativity gives it depth and meaning. It's what draws the reader in and makes them anxious to find out what is going to happen next.
3. Technique - Here is where the tactics and planning comes in. How are you using your weapon/magic? Why are you using it that way? What is it you're hoping to achieve? Are you using a particular style of martial arts, sword fighting, magic, etc.? If you are using a particular style...why? What is it about this style that best suits your character, this opponent, etc? This is the in-depth look into the mind of the fighter. It's the strategy he/she uses in order to win.
4. Response - As mentioned before, Para-fighting is a co-written effort. There needs to be cooperation, a recognition of the opponent's actions, and a reasonable, realistic reaction to that. Ignoring the three magical lightning strikes headed straight for your heart in order to charge forward and attack with a sword makes no sense. How did you run forward when you were getting shocked? It's fine to dodge that and -then- run forward, but ignoring the obstacles your opponent put in front of you blurs the whole scene. If you dodge, how did you do it? If you didn't, how were you injured? How is it you still managed to keep fighting?
5. Respect - NO AUTO ANYTHING! The only thing one should be able to do automatically is dodge. You never have to get hit, although coming through an entire fight without a scratch is rather unrealistic, nobody can make you get hurt. Magic is never guaranteed to score or have the desired effect. Weapons can miss their mark. This one is important because to do anything automatically (other than dodge) is godmodding.
To gather more information about para style battles, see the next post for a guide written by Laelia Kaliba.
Structured (Dice)
Dice Battle Procedure
1. Each Player rolls for Initiative by rolling 1d20. The character with the highest roll gets to attack first. A tie results in a re-roll.
2. The attacker will roll 1d20 to attack. The defender will roll 1d20 to defend. The higher roll wins the round. If the attacker wins the round, they get to roll for damage as indicated by their rank. A tie always goes to the defender.
3. Repeat step 2 with each player taking turns as attacker and defender. The battle ends when one combatant's hit points reaches 0.
Example:
Player A rolls attack 1d20 and gets 14. Player B rolls defend 1d20 and gets 12. Player A wins the round and rolls for damage against Player B.
Player B rolls attack 1d20 and gets 4. Player A rolls defend 1d20 and gets 10. Player A wins the round and receives no damage.
A healing would look like this:
Player A decides to heal themselves instead of attack this round and rolls their damage roll to determine how many hit points they gain back. Player B has nothing to defend against and the next round begins with Player B as the attacker.
Rank
HP (hit points) are how many posts you have. You get a bonus +50 HP for each year you've been in Tyran (players must request their bonus to be added to their profile on the forum under polls and awards section)
E.g.: If you have 33 posts, your HP is 33. The damage you do is based on the following rank chart. If you have 33 posts, you are rank 2 and deal d4 damage. HP maxes out at 1000, but you may continue to get higher ranks to deal more DMG
Healing is the same as your damage roll and replaces your attack that turn.
RANK LEVEL | TITLE | DAMAGE/ HEALING | HP/POST COUNT | Rank 1 | Newbie | d2 | 1 | Rank 2 | Initiate | d4 | 30 | Rank 3
| Apprentice | d6 | 100 | Rank 4
| Amateur | d8 | 300 | Rank 5
| Adventurer | d10 | 600 | Rank 6
| Citizen | d15 | 1000 (Max HP) | Rank 7
| Specialist | d20 | 1500 | Rank 8
| Elite | d25 | 2000 | Rank 9
| Ascended | d30 | 2500 | Rank 10 | Legend | d40 | 3000 |
Special Clan Battle Guidelines
When a clan goes up against another clan, ALL members are allowed to participate in the battle. Thus, a larger clan will naturally have an advantage here. You may fight until either your leader is taken down, or all participants have been defeated before the leader thus forcing surrender/capture. Fighters may ‘retreat’ on their turn to have another step in. However, eventually that injured fighter -will- have to go back into the fight. So choose your strategy wisely. Win Condition 1: Defeat leader. Win Condition 2: Defeat all members other than the leader. Before Battle: Provide staff member with list of members participating, and their dice rank. Toss a coin (d2 dice, 1 heads and 2 tails) to see who picks their fighter second. Picking second lets you see who the other clan picks first, and allows you to pick reactively. Active fighters will announce their rank AFTER being chosen.
During Battle: Its 1v1. Each person fights until they hit 0 HP or retreat to have another step in.

The Commander's Guide to Paragraph Combat 101
I’ve been fighting paragraph battles for over ten years now. And believe me, it took me a very long time to get as comfortable with them as I am now. Writing paragraph battles is definitely a skill that can be honed and can only be made better by practicing. I decided to write some tips based on some of the battles I’ve fought, and some of the critiques I’ve have while watching others para battle.
This list does not explain the basic rules of paragraph battles, though it probably touches on a few of them in some way. The aim of this list is to provide some tips on things you can do to improve your combat writing skills. They are things I try to include in my posts and some of them are things I look for, or at least appreciate when I am judging. This is by no means a comprehensive list and I freely admit that it is full of my own opinion and bias, though theoretically an educated one. The points are laid out in no particular order of importance and I will probably continue to add more things as I think of them.
So without further ado, here is Paragraph Battle Tips 101.
Grammar counts. But not necessarily how you think!
Though para battles are not heavily judged on spelling and grammar, the clarity with which you write is very important. I’m not talking the odd typo. That’s easy to overlook. But if your opponent has a difficult time reading what you have written, they aren’t able to reply as effectively. If the judges are not able to get a clear idea of what your character has done, you will probably lose points. I will be very honest when I say that if I have to reread your post three times in order to understand what you’re doing, that’s not good. Avoid run-on sentences connected by multiple commas. A general rule I go by is that if I have to use more than three commas, restructure the sentence. Use a period. Start a new sentence. Do whatever you have to do.
Re-read and edit your posts. This goes along a similar vein with grammar. Using a spell/grammar check can only get you so far. They aren’t perfect. Re-read and do it out loud. Check to see if what you’re reading makes sense to you. If you slip up, or find yourself confused by what you just read? Re-structure it. Unless you are in a strictly timed match, you have time.
Use your describing words. Paint me a picture of the scene you have playing out in your head. Make me see it in as much detail as you can. Use your W’s: Who, What, Where, When, Why. Describe what all five senses would be experiencing. What does your character see, hear, smell, taste, feel? What do you want your opponent to experience? Describe the colour of that spell, or the sound your weapon makes when it slashes through the air or hits your opponents armour. Explain to me the position of your body. Is your knee bent? Is your arm outstretched? Little details like that breathe life into a scene.
Location, location, location! This is important! Tell me where you’re trying to hit me! I can’t defend if you don’t tell me where you’re trying to hit me! You can’t just say ‘I lash out with my sword and try to cut them to smithereens’. No! No, no, no! Are you trying to hit my head? My chest? What direction is the strike coming from? Is it an overhand strike? Is it a diagonal strike starting at the right side of my chest, or the left? Is the blow coming from below? Always include where you are aiming.
Research goes a long way. A wonderful way to add to your paragraph battles is to know something about the weapons and armour your character is using. Do some research. Google is your friend! Look up the names for the basic parts of your weapon and armour. Know the difference between pauldrons and greaves, between a hilt and a pommel. It just adds more and more to your descriptive arsenal to do this.
Do not waste your first post. I have seen it multiple times where a person has written a bunch of great stuff in their first post. It’s well written, and interesting. But it has absolutely nothing to do with the battle. Yes, it’s cool to insert some inner commentary about your characters thoughts and feelings and history. It can add some interesting insight. However, this is a battle. If you heavily base a post on this and neglect to write much of anything about an attack or a defensive action, that post is basically a write-off. Without an attack/defense, there is nothing for me to judge. I am judging you on fighting, not on how well you articulate your character’s feelings about their opponent. If you aren’t fighting in that post, there’s nothing for me to judge and you basically just wasted a post with filler. This can give your opponent a significant advantage. So make sure you get in your attack and defense in each post!
