Sedah approached her, eyeing Victor as he passed and moved to her side. "Yes well..." He started as Victor spoke but didn't continue as he listened to his sister introduce them. He looked to Victor then back to Nahaeh, listening to her explain the scenario as he knelt down to look at the wound, seeing it having been wrapped and deciding against disturbing the bandages. He did however take her dress in his hand for a moment, looking at the tears in it before turning his head back to see the dead wolves in the distance. His eyes gazed from the wolves to Victor after a while, still a little apprehensive however his expression seemed apologetic as he stood back to his feet, reaching over and taking his sister into a hug.
"I am just glad you are safe." He said as he released her, giving her a knowing smile as if his expression were to say are you serious. The expression was not for the thanking part however but more her reaction to Victor, he could see her cheeks with color and her eyes gaze onto him and speak words of a knight in shining armor. Sedah had an inkling of what was going on with her as he gave a smirk to Victor, taking a moment to wipe his face clean of the expression before giving Victor a more genuine smile. He reached out his hand as if to shake Victors, waiting for their hands to meet. "Sorry about that. I am a bit over protective some say. I'm Sedah, Navaeh's older brother." He said as he greeted Victor. "Thank you for saving her. I owe you a debt friend."

Dark brown hues watched Sedah as he approached her and listened to her bringing him up to speed on everything. Those eyes drifted back to Victor as he explained that he had a younger sister. This brought a smile to her face once more. That meant that he knew Sedah would have some type of over reaction. He knelt down to look at the wound, and the tears in her dress and those hues moved back to him, watching his expression. She watched as his head turned looking in the direction of the wolves and he rose and took her into a hug. Her arms wrapped around him, returning his hug.
~I am just glad you are safe~ Her arms fell from around him as he released her, giving her a knowing smile as if his expression were to say are you serious.She retorted with a look of mind your own business. Sedah apologized to Victor and introduced himself, extending his hand, a smile touched her lips once again thinking this could have been a lot worse.
She began to follow Victor as he headed in the direction they came, her walk having a limp to it. She looked around, nothing seeming to look the same. What was going on?

If he had been offended, he still didn't seem it. He did however shake his head at the mention of debt. "You owe me nothing, your Sister needed help and I was in the area. I imagine you'd do the same for mine." he said before cutting a glance to Navaeh and her limp. This wasn't looking good.
He pressed on just a little further before realizing the truth. He could see the cliffs above the treeline. They were in the ravine. How in the hell would they be there? Panic was his enemy, and his number of charges- first Navaeh, and now her brother- wouldn't respond well if he did. They might not of known he was only fifteen, they did know he was wearing armor and was armed. Reaching to his side he unstrapped his gladius, and handed it and the sheath to Sedah.
" You should hold this, keep it close. Don't worry- just... stay alert. The Forest is known to trap those within, we'll have to find our way out by finding our way through. Perhaps we should press on until nightfall, then make camp. " He offered, before without another word he continued walking. He needed to get them to higher ground.
"Where were you and your family going, Naevaeh, Sedah?"

Sedah smiled a bit to Victor before turning back to Navaeh. "So the question is now how do weh- hey!" He said, cutting his thought off as he watched Victor start to move off into the forest with his sister in tow. He looked around at the area before catching up to them, offering his sister his shoulder if she would need it at all as he walked beside her. He wanted to ask what was going on with Victor but felt best to remain stoic, reminding himself of Victor's knight appearance and assuming he knew where they were going. Unlike Navaeh he wasn't around to hear his explanation of the forest and their parents didn't do much to tell them of it's dangers either, recanting them only ever saying not to go far in fear of getting lost.
"Ah... alright." Sedah nodded as Victor offered him the gladius, taking it hesitantly and slipping it onto his belt. He gave Victor another nod, keeping his composure as his brain screamed alarms at him. If Victor was giving him the sword it meant that Victor might think there were dangers and the wolves only helped to illustrate that. He couldn't help but remind himself that he had absolutely no idea how to wield a sword and repeatedly reminded himself not to cut his foot off if he had to draw it. Sedah smiled to his sister again, gripping the swords scabbard that was now fastened to his belt as they walked on.
His mind made note of the surroundings, realizing this place looked nothing like the area he ran through and gave Victor a nod as he suggested their means of escaping the forest. He heard Victor ask him about their destination, taking a moment to collect himself as his eyes continued to wander the surroundings before looking to Victor. Sedah looked back to Navaeh for a moment, a worried look on his face before looking back to Victor. "We were moving homes. Our father is something of a traveling merchant. He got a job in the city and he decided we should move and settle down." He said, hoping that would be a convincing enough lie. He wasn't prepared to tell Victor that their father was a drunk and a gambler who got into debt. He didn't want Navaeh to hear him tell Victor that they were running away from their home in fear of debt.

Those dark brown hues looked to Victor, he seemed so humble. That had been a rarity now a days in these parts at least. She knew her leg would only slow them down and those hues lowered then rose back up again. Victor pressed on. She did her best to move as fast as she could, determined to not let that leg slow her down.
They stopped again and those hues drifted between her brother and Victor. Those dark brown hues watched as Victor handed Sedah the gladius and those brows began to furrow. Her mind began to wonder if Sedah even knew how to hold a sword, much less used it.
She looked to their surroundings, taking in the sight of the forest as she kept herself close to Sedah. Then she heard Victor ask why they were out in these woods. Her gaze trailed up at her brother, She had began to wonder the same Then she heard her brother's explanation and nodded, now knowing why, or at least she thought.

Victor pressed on remaining silent for a few moments. "What city were you hoping to make it to?" he asked curiously, and realizing some measure of conversation would be necessary to keep panic away, as the would soon exit the ravine by the winding path at the mouth of it, raising up to even levels. Soon they were making progress- most of it seemed to go through rougher terrain than before. Victor slowed to accommodate Navaeh, and as the darkness began to fill the sky overhead, it became obvious they'd need to camp. He didn't bring gear enough for all of them- but they'd have to make due. In the distance, the sound of a long howl pierced the silence as he came to a stop. "I think we need to make camp. Sedah, can you gather some tinder? Nevaeh, I've got rations in -" he paused reaching into his larger rucksack and bringing out a folded bag. "here. Just take out what you and your brother will need." The location was clear for visibility considering, and in the cover of some very large trees. He began working up a small shelter, the tent only suitable for two. "You two will take the tent, I'll keep watch first- and sleep outside."

Sedah looked behind them a couple times as they walked. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was following them, stalking them even and he had a suspicion that it was no wolf. He shook his head however, smiling lightly to Navaeh as if to say everything is alright as they walked on.
"Oh our father never said. I assumed it was a city close by but he has never given a name. He only said it was a city." He answered, looking back to Victor to catch his reaction. He hoped he wasn't catching on, not wanting his sister to find out about their fathers true nature just yet. He smiled to Victor and nodded when the subject was changed, looking around a little before taking off a little ways. "Alright, I will be quick he answered to Victor before taking off to find tinder.
Sedah was wandering catiously as he gathered tinder for a fire, making sure to pick some rocks for a base as well. He chuckled to himself, feeling a little repetative as this was exactly what he was doing before he got himself in this situation. He looked back to them, making sure he wasn't too far from them as he gathered. As he knelt down he felt the urge to look up into the dark forest. He could feel something starring right at him but there was nothing there...

Felt like a burden when the terrain started to become rougher and they had to slow to accommodate her limp. She just hoped that her leg would feel better by morning.In her self pity, those ears managed to pick up Victor's question about what city they were headed to and Sedah stated that their father never mentioned the name. Dark brown hues lifted to Sedah, wondering as well where their parents were planning on bringing them. Sedah smiled to her and those lips curled upward into a smile in return.
Darkness was falling upon the land and the howling sound made her jump slightly. A look of worry appeared within her eyes, until they fell upon Victor and remembered how he saved her earlier that day from not one, but three wolves and began to relax a little. When Victor stopped walking, she did as well. Those dark brown hues looking between he and her brother as Victor mentioned making camp and asking Sedah to gather wood for a fire. Sedah said he would be quick and left them to do just that.
Dark brown hues watched her brother walk away, then moved to Victor as he approached, handing her a folded bag of rations and told her to take what she and her brother would need. "Victor..." she began as she reached out, grasping the folded bag with her fingers, "I am sorry you got stuck with us." Those hues lowered then rose to look to him once more. "I wish we would have met under different circumstances."
She unfolded the pouch carefully and took only a couple of pieces of rations, not knowing how many days that he had planned on for his adventure out here. "What is this forest? It seems to change before your eyes?" she wondered as she looked to Victor who was setting up shelter. He told her that she and her brother would take the tent and that he would take first watch and sleep outside. Her head lowered then rose in response. "Alright. Victor, how old is your sister? Do you have any brothers?" she was trying to make conversation, not knowing how long they were going to be together so, why not try to get to know him some?

( From in room play with Naveah and Victor) Victor glanced over after finishing the tent, givine Navaeh the smallest possible smile, his lips rather thin in pensive thought over their situation. Her question of why, how, what- he didn't know if she'd want to hear the answer. So instead he waited for the other questions. " She's my twin. She's same as me, only 3 minutes and 33 seconds younger. She's very mad I didn't bring her along- or mad I went in the first place."
He smiled at the thought- a little joy would go a long way towards all of their survival. " I have two brothers. Reign and Trent. Reign's accomplished a lot in his life- and I don't think he's ever really tried." He said with a chuckle that might've held a shred of bitterness.
"Trent, well. He recently lost his lover. It's changed him. He actually takes care of my families affairs, helping my Mother- who's been ill lately." He was careful not to say his last name. It tended to affect people poorly on occasion.
Navaeh noticed the thinning of his lips and how the smile was small. Was it being forced? She wondered. Those dark brown hues lowering for just a split second, that was until he began to speak of his family. When he did, those eyes lifted back to look to him, lips curling into a smile as she listened
His sister was his twin. He spoke of her being mad that he did not bring her along, or that she was mad he went in the first place. A soft chuckle would escape her lips as she spoke, "I bet she is. I would be upset if Sedah went on an adventure without me" is that what this was? An adventure for him? Well nonetheless, she said it. No taking it back now
His smile grew and this caused her lips to curl into a bright smile. He looked dreamy when he smiled. He spoke of his two brothers Reign and Trent and she listened intently, wishing to know all she could about him. But then he spoke of his mother being ill. Those brows furrowed a moment, "What has taken her to be ill Victor?"
That was a tough question. Hm. " She had some bad tea." He said dryly, and didnt elaborat on it. Instead he felt something pull at his mind- an alert? Something. He felt uneasy this whole time- that was to be expected. But suddenly he felt very much exposed. As if someone was looking at him, throw him. The chill that spread over his form faded, and when it did he turned attention back to Navaeh.
"We'll have to work hard tomorrow to make the Archway. It's near a day's hike. Once we make the Archway, it's a short way to the chapel. We'll be safe there but we'll make it around eight or nine in the evening. Once we get there, I can signal for help. It's clear enough there. "

Navaeh noticed the driness in his tone and those dark hues lowered then raised once more. She noticed his expression and demeanor had changed and she wondered, "Is something wrong Victor?" Her head turned to look around, then her gaze settled back on him.
He spoke of the Archway and it being near a days hike, then a chapel where he could signal for help. "Do you think any will see the signal out here?" she looked down then back to him, "I hope my limp wont be as bad tomorrow. Do you think we should check my wounds to see how the claw marks are doing? Should I expose them to the air overnight?"
He shook his head with the sudden realization he could cause her fear in his unschooled reactions. His sister had often said You will not have the liberty of being so open with your disapointment, your fear, your doubt. A Kaliba never does. Laelia was as right now as she was then. , "No. Nothing wrong, just the- uncommon chill of this place. I wouldn't remove the bandage. We'll change the dressings in the morning- but the damp of the wood would only invite infection."
" The salve is going to promote healing- besides, it's made by some of the best magical healers in New Arisalon. We'll have you running around in no time," he said with a reassuring nod. "Right now, you should eat something- a trail biscuit and some jerky, I've got dried fruit in there, as well as some cheese. Best to eat it now, lest it turns in our travels."

Navaeh lips curl into a smile as he seemed to bring his attention back to her. A nod of her head given as he said something about an uncommon chill of this place, "These woods do seem rather creepy." He spoke of not removing the bandage and that they would change the dressing in the morning. Then he spoke of the salve.
"New Arisalon? Is that where your home is? Where is that? Is it nice there?" she wondered. He spoke of how she should eat and looked to him, "You need to eat as well you know. You shouldn't have to suffer just because you got stuck with me"
He shook his head. " I will. There is more than enough in the bag. I brought enough for more than a week for myself. We only need about seven meals between us. Take what I asked you to take, and eat. I'll eat when your brother returns." he said a little more forcefully, but still quite assuringly. He had no intention of letting these people die here. But he couldn't afford to take any disadvantage he didn't already have.
"Now, I'll say this again when your brother gets here. But this place is very dangerous. It is possible we could run into the undead when we go past the archway. This wood is alive. It seems to think- it doesn't want us here- and it will fight us ever step of the way. I'll need you to be brave. I'll be with you every step of the way.

Navaeh he told her there was more than enough and that he would eat when her brother returned. She nodded her head and grabbed one of the pieces of jerky that she took out earlier. It seemed he was avoiding her questions about New Arisalon. But why? Did he not want her knwing where he lived? Those dark brown hues lowered to look at the ground as she put a piece of jerky in her mouth and began to chew
Those hues only lifting to look to him once more as he spoke of this place being very dangerous and how it was possible that they may run into the undead. Those eyes widened and she gulped down that piece of jerky that she was chewing on. He told her that he needed her to be brave and that he would be with her every step of the way. The thought of him being there, made her relax some. She drew in her lower lip and chewed on it a couple of seconds before letting it pop out of her mouth, "Victor, when all this is over" she paused for a couple of seconds then continued, "Do you think we'll ever see each other again?"
" I'm not sure, Navaeh. But if you ever make it to New Arisalon- I'd love to see you and your brother. " He said, realizing then he'd avoiced her question. He certainly hadn't meant to. "New Arisalon is a beautiful city. Had some hard times lately- but nothing that didn't make the people stronger. You'd like it there. Maybe that is where your family is moving? "
He raised a brow, " I think you had some questions about where I live, could you repeat them? I was distracted. " Even his apologies had a certain grace about them. The man looked as if ripped from a fairy tale, his youth, and vibrancy was a light that kept the gloaming darkness from swallowing them all.

Navaeh lips curled into a goofy smile once more as he told her if they ever made it to New Arisalon he would love to see her and her brother. He then spoke of the place and she watched him, listening to him. He asked her if maybe that was maybe where her family was going. Then he explained how he was distracted when she asked him about where he lived. Slowly she closed her eyes then reopened them. "You already answered most of my questions" a soft chuckle escaped her. The only one you didn't answer was where it was."
She would now answer his question, "I'm not sure where my parents are taking us. We have been camping out from place to place for some time now. I lost track of the days." she brought her shoulders upward into a shrug then lowered them. "I hope my parents bring us to our new home soon. I hope it is New Arisalon so that we can see each other again" She leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, then pulled away quickly. Her eyes grew big and she bit her bottom lip, "Sorry"
For a moment, Victor stared at her with a kind of muted disbelief, not that he was confused or anything- just that it was the second time in around twenty-four hours that some one had done that under around the same circumstances. He gave her a slightly awkward smile, as he didn't know how to react to girls kissing him, and nodded. " Sounds more like wandering, and less like traveling- New Arisalon is to the West, follow the northern coast. White towers can be seen from miles away. Our-uh, the armies protect much of the Northern lands- including Silem to the East. "
He didn't dare reach for her to assure her it was fine- Sedah could show up at any minute. Instead, he gave her a quiet nod as if apologies weren't necessary, but kept talking as to make sure it didn't happen again lest they are caught.
" Tell me, have you or Sedah have any survival training? Any skills you think will help?" he asked trying to shift to the serious challenges that awaited them tomorrow.

Navaeh's cheeks burned as she stared at him nervously, chewing on her bottom lip. When he gave her that slightly awkward smile, she brought her right hand up to her brow and began to rub the flesh above it some before lowering her hand. He spoke of how her parents movements sounded more like wandering and then told her where New Arisalon was and how to get there.
He asked if she or Sedah had any survival training or skills she thought may help. Her head turned to look to where Sedah was and then back to him. She thought a moment then shook her head no. "I don't believe so. I was shocked when you gave him that sword to use. I'm afraid he'll cut himself with it. Dad has always too drunk to teach us anything." She looked around, the darkness was about them and she could barely see. She brought her right hand up, turning it so that her palm stood straight up. Those brown hues looking to her hand as she concentrated and a small blue flame appeared just above her hand.
Dark brown hues lifted to his face once more and she spoke, "There, I can see you better now" she chuckles softly. "How old are you Victor?"
"Magic, nice! " he said with genuine hope. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. " Well Nevaeh, I'm fifteen. My sister and I are the youngest. I'm nearly sixteen though. " His eyes shifted their gaze in the direction of her brother. He'd be back soon with that kindling he was sure of it- and he'd already found enough wood to tend the fire for the rest of the night.
The blue glow of the flame cast an erie series of shadow against the dark surroundings. While the light should of made him feel a little better- it only made him notice how alive the surroundings could be- particularly the movement of a black rabbit not far from where they were seated.

Navaeh looked to him with a smile, "I'm also 15." she looked down then back up at him. Those eyes look to the flame and she brings her other hand up, palm upright and begins to bounce the flame back and forth between her palms. "If you call this magic, then yes, I do suppose. I make the flames appear when I am bored, or when I want some light. She truly didn't know that it was magic. A soft chuckle escaped her, "Your the first person who has seen my flame."
Caught something moving out of the corner of her eye and her body became stiff. A hard gulp was taken and she turned her head, seeing the black rabbit, "Bunny! You found me!" a smile formed on her lips as she looked at the rabbit.
Something about the rabbit seemed off- but it wasn't wise for him to dwell on it. He instead hesitated a short moment and glanced into the wood where the rabbit may have come. It bolted deeper into the wood away from the light, from the exclamation- as wild and mercurial as you'd expect.
Fingertips sorted through his hair, and he sighed. "Perhaps you'll run into him again, " he said with a small nod. "As for the flames- that's hardly something you should keep to yourself. You'll want to find someone to teach you- it can be dangerous. There is an academy in Silem and in New Arisalon for that- might be harmless, but magic is something you should tend to- both to protect yourself from it and from others. "
He wouldn't have expected such a normal girl to have such an abnormal manifestation, but it was a small comfort. Perhaps the next leg of the journey wouldn't be so bad.

Her lips frowned as the bunny ran off. He spoke of her perhaps running into the rabbit again and she turned her head back forward to look at him once more. Those shoulders came up into a shrug then lowered "I suppose your right" She tossed the flame into the air and it fizzled out. Those hues drifted to his eyes as he spoke of the flames.
She listened as he spoke of how she would want someone to teach her and that it could be dangerous. He also spoke of two different academys and she furrowed her brows, "Are they expensive?" she wondered. Her family didn't have much money, in fact her mother had to make their clothing for them
"Well, in New Arisalon they can be- but they offer rudimentary training for free. Uncontrolled magic can be very dangerous. It's for the public good that anyone with the gift at least know how to control their power." he said with a tone of someone who had been taught it at a young age. He looked at her with a bit of prolonged concern.
"I'll be sure to mention it to your parents when I get you both home."

She looked at him a little confused, "Rudimentary training? Is that basic training?" she looked down, then back up to him, "do you have any magic?" she thought about going 'home' and the thought sent a shiver down her spine. Even though the forest was dangerous, she wanted to stay in it forever with him. The forest seemed far less dangerous than her father on a drunken tirade. Not wanting to say it, she simply nodded her head.
"Yes, basic. It's general training enough to have a foundation. But that's enough for tonight. It's time you get to sleep. " he gestured to the tent as he rose from the place he had been sitting in. "We'll leave at first light. We'll have the fire going- but get some sleep all the same. That wound and the poultice will work better if you've gotten proper rest."

Post by Sedah on Jul 27, 2017 3:45:51 GMT -8
Sedah looked deep into the trees as he was gathering tinder, blinking into the darkness and nearly taking a step forward as he saw what appeared to be the red eyes of some beast. His eyes went wide and he took a few steps back, nearly releasing all the tinder in his hands before the eyes vanished again, a flash of red through the corner of his eye as he dropped all he was holding and moved to draw his sword on... nothing... He blinked again and took a deep breath, suddenly hearing a sound of leaves rustling as he turned back to where the eyes were again, drawing the sword this time on the monstrous beast that would lung before him. His whole body shook as he held the sword forward into the darkness, the sound of rustling heard again as he took a step back, sweat beading down his face when the beast moved from the shadows and into the dim light to make itself known.
The black rabbit hopped out of the forest, sniffing the air as it's ears perked up before him. Sedah's brow furrowed as he gazed upon the rabbit letting out an exasperated sigh and sheathing his gladius. He wiped the sweat from his brow, looking down at the rabbit that hopped around a little, staying weary of him the entire time. "Get a grip Sedah... it's just a bunny." He said, kneeling down to pick up the kindling he had dropped before turning back. He began to make his way back, turning his head to look upon the rabbit one last time before walking back, blinking as the rabbit seemed to have vanished.
Sedah shook his head, blinking his eyes before turning back. "It ran away. It just took off." He said to himself with a huff, shaking the fact that he could hear it moving before but didn't hear it leap away from his mind as he hiked the tinder into his arms. He made sure he had a good grip on the tinder as he walked back towards the camp where Victor and Navaeh was sitting, furrowing his brow when he noticed a look on her face as Victor stood. He shook his head with another sigh, walking back to them with a light grin as he brought the kindling to where he assumed Victor intended to make the fire and dropping it down. "This is all I could find." He said, looking to Victor as he knelt down to the kindling he had dropped and began to prop it up like the generic campfire one sees in storybooks.

He confirmed her question on if it was basic training and told her that it would be enough for her to build a foundation. She nodded her head and thought to herself ~Well at least I'd get that much~. He told her she needed her rest and stood. Those dark brown hues followed him as he stood with a kind of sadness that their conversation was coming to its end, but he was right, she needed her rest in order to heal.
Hearing her brother come up from behind with the kindling, she looked to Sedah a moment, seeing the look on his face and cocked her head to the right. She then stood upright and moved to the tent to rest for the night. "Good night Victor, Good night Sedah" Once at the tent, she lay down, making herself comfy and closed her eyes.

A black rabbit skittered into the provisional campsite.
The camp's delusions of safety marked it alluring for a critter indebted to security. The scent of humankind had become familiar over the past days, luring and toying with its curiosity. It crouched and lay beneath the refuge of a crooked and damp log, chewing at it so that the flavors of rot and insects filled its mouth as it watched and waited through the night.
~~~
As morning neared, the break of hushed gold through heavy fog seemed to reflect and glint off a new pair of eyes tucked beneath the log. The rabbit was gone.
In its place was a soil-caked woman in a black, simple shift, who was crooked beneath the log with white skin like bone and flyaway hair as long and glistening as spiders' silk. She crawled her way out from beneath the wet wood and brushed aside the remaining detritus that clung like leeches to her.
Upon the black shift, faded now from usage, were remnants of pocketed traveler's possessions: A dark red shawl pinched and hung at her waist, a torn coat draped across her shoulders like lace - such were the abundance of dappled holes in the fabric - and a myriad of pouches made with various materials collected about her hips.
She moved as a nightmare moves, from one tent to the next, hovering and looming, sniffing at the dreams that still ate at the occupant's minds.
"My wolves..." she said in a low, muddled voice as she stalked Navaeh's tent. The scent of old blood filled her nostrils and occupied her face with agitation. She moved from the tent, fingers scraping along the outside, and shimmied past to tuck herself behind twisted and gnarled foliage in waiting. Such would be her reward when morning broke their dreams.
Victor tried to stay awake, but at one point he drifted outside of the short amount of time he had Sedah keep watch while he slept. During this failure, his dreams sank into a murky darkness, deeper than even the Deep Wood. He felt as if eyes peered at him, looking at him in his vulnerability- curious, but also hungry.
It was a hunger that stirred something in Victor- though only in that dream- as if a presence brushed across him faintly, like walking through the strands of a spider’s web. His body stirred as his mind tried to shake itself from slumber, and the young man’s armored frame lurched forward, sloping in posture as weariness was shook from his form. The glow of sunlight through the fog gave him renewed vigor in the hope that the sun still shined in such a gloom.
Sitting atop the massive roots of the great tree, and leaning against the trunk, he rose to his feet looking over the singular tent. Expression fell, he had almost forgot their dire situation. Quiet steps, despite the make of his armor carried him closer to their fire to tend the dying embers that would last the night’s last gasps- but would die by the morning’s birth. He stirred them with a piece of kindling he dropped into the coals to consume.
His dream of the void persisted even in this waking hour. Something was close. He could not perceive it, but yet he felt it- just as he felt the slightest chill settled into his spine. With no one to witness, he considered Sinead’s scroll- but soon found himself more tempted by breakfast than anything else. Taking some of his rations, a small chunk of cheese, some salted beef, and a dry biscuit, he committed to make the best of it. Anything to get his mind off that chill, and the ever present feeling of being watched.
Her eyes whirred from the tent to the armor-clad lad who awoke from an unsettled rest. The sight of him, the new sounds, and the smells of foreign foods provoked her closer, creeping along the heaps of flora that grew as untamed as her hair. Naked toes were numb with cold, wrapped only in soft cloth torn from various articles of cotton and hemp.
She watched in silent obscurity for a time as he ate. As he was nearing the end of his feed, she stood like an apparition in the woods; her face like a bright moon in the murky dolor of the Deep Wood.
“Hello, boy.” Her voice was as crisp as the night; as clear as daybreak. She drew near enough now so that he could see the woven leaves in her hair and ornaments of twigs that decorated her crown like a royal child. She smelled heavily of dank trilliums and musky garden refuse; of hop sedge and earth.
Her eyes were large and strange, golden in color like an artifact sheltered in a deep, dark cavern. She was beautiful in the way that forbidden things are known to be: cryptic and beguiling. Her head cantered to the side; the folds of her hair whispering as they drank up the tenebrous light cheerlessly gracing her bare and bony shoulders.
From the leather casings of a medium pouch dangling about her hip, she drew the jagged, cut remains of a wolf pelt still sodden with new blood. “Who slew my wolves, boyling?” she asked, showing him the the black hide and running a slender thumb through the bristling fur.
His first instinct was a protest. The second instinct was to draw steel. Both were foolish, fiery responses- better used by a brute than a man. With a quiet confidence that set nerves to rattle in the adults often around him, his vision took her in. She was given the long stare of blue eyes that despite the chill associated with the hue, they seemed to burn. Right now, it was a warmth- an invitation to relax, to discuss. To rest by a fire that could not be extinguished.
As inviting as that gaze could be, despite his wariness- Witches did not often seek company with flames. The boy would not suffer the insult of her tone- or perhaps, he'd consider the dirt covered source. "Hello, girl."
He said in counter, his voice a little more mature than the hairless face he presented. "I slew your wolves, shortly before they had the chance to slay a girl." His eyes narrowed for a moment as if considering her for threat. If she was here... she was.
" I can understand your grief, as they do only what wolves do. I however, do what men do. If they were your friends, I offer you a meal in sympathy."
Her eyes heated like the sun that was so absent in the depths of the Wood; the dark gold of them almost complimenting his of blue as if somehow, perhaps, they once shared a sky.
She tossed the slab of cut hide at his feet as if it were garbage, the smell of it nearly sickening. “Girl.” she said, repeating his word as if it were an insult. “Slew my wolves.” She advanced, slowly, flickering her gaze once to his belongings and back again. “Grief. A meal.” Her voice was hard-edged like a knife slicing through the thick silence that had been there but a moment ago.
Her stomach was pained by hunger, made worse by the scents of his breakfast and the invitation of his words. She ignored it in favor of strength of spirit, boring into his in contest.
She knew of the girl; could smell her even from here with the wound that perforated the air. Her ability to smell was of a sensitive sort, delicate and useful. “Who are you that stampedes through my Wood with a gangly group of vagrants?"
"Who are you, who clings to this wood- as I pass through it?" He asked with a cant of his head. The Kaliba will was well known, but he doubted this wood dweller had any inkling of it, no doubt no more than his companions of serendipidity. Fingertips tapped idly against his thigh. The staccato punctuation of her words tested his patience as he took a few steps as she did, putting himself always between the wildling and the two who had no business in such a place.
Say what you will about the exchange, she left out Boy this time.
" I am Victor, I have business beyond the Arch- past the stone steps. " He said as if those words meant something. Perhaps to someone his father had left behind, it would. Perhaps to her, so aware of the enchanted forest, it would. " Are you she who'd have dominion? Or she who'd merely claim it?" He said less with challenge and more query.
Her hackles rose at his initial dodge from her question, displeased by him, though also intrigued by the game they shared of tested will. She drew a step closer and stopped, her stance like a triangle that rooted her into the earth like a barrier.
“Victor.” The name was spoken like a dove shot from the heavens, so heavy and ruthless did it fall from her. “Yes,” she continued in answer, watching his movements, his mannerisms. She observed his armor, his words, the pulsing of his neck as he breathed. “I am dominion here.”
The distant sound of wolves were dying and fading out with daybreak; yips could be heard like eerie ghosts wailing in the obfuscated depths of the darkwood.
“I am Kerrigan. This is my Wood. Those were my wolves. You--” she pointed with an uncut, pointed nail. “--must pay for them."
"This is your wood, as much as the sky is mine," he said with a hard edge. " Kerrigan." He added, his gaze grew steely. He'd never had to kill a person. He had no intention to do so now, but he wondered if it would come to such. " Your predators picked the wrong prey. And if you have dominion in the wild, you will abide by the Rules of such. A failed predator is only prey- regardless the 'owner'." He said with a smirk that came unbid. Something about her didn't just put him on edge, it almost angered him.
Victor was anything if in control of such anger, thanks to Rosewyn's constant pressing. Victor angry, lead to broken bones. Doors ripped from hinges.
" Your possession of the wolves only proves you care little enough for them. You would have ensured them to be better hunters. Do you take the payment of a meal, or will you press this issue? "
Her observations were calculating and slow; time seemed to pass by like seasons did to a child waiting for a holiday. She noted his strength and ability to challenge her. Her anger was almost seeking, as if testing its limits with the stranger. The tactic proved to have no further game to hunt, and she let her face soften like cold butter left out to warm.
“The boy speaks true, perhaps,” she crooned, letting the fortified stance collapse into something more womanly and inviting. She smiled then, something almost deceptively pretty like she’d seen many a traveling lass do amongst the trees with their companions.
“Victor,” she corrected, moving in close to sniff subtly at him, her shoulder brushing against his, her eyes gazing upwards from beneath leafy dark lashes. She was still hungry; the scent of food still strong and nearby. “Perhaps, we can discuss.”
Anger still dappled beneath the surface, but she leashed it and let the bitter tones spawn with sweetness at her mouth like flower nectar. “Victor, sit with me? Share your meal.” An order, almost, though it seemed she didn’t fully understand the subtle nuances of civil verbal expression.
He could write a book on the things this.. wild woman? No. He could smell the herbs, the mixtures, the hair, the feathers. He could see it in her haphhazard clothing, almost finery made from rubbish. The woman was no mere savage. She had been outside this wood. She had learned somewhere, perhaps even here.
He had been warned that witches and worse traveled from far away to find the vestiges of the old gods. He supposed his dad was no different in his attractive qualities. The breakneck speed of her facial change, caused an brow to arch, but he acquiesced. Unless he wanted things to escalate to violence, violence he was not sure he'd be able to control- He'd need to play her game.
She was bony. Perhaps underfed. He could not imagine the wood not starving even those who had 'dominion.' She probably subsisted on the cloying miasma that choked out the life and hope of intruders. He could speculate all he wanted on her vile magics, but it would be better if he pursued facts.
" Perhaps discussion is what we both could use. This posturing solves little of our impasse." He said his own acknowledgment that he'd not indulge in further fruitless debate. He gestured down towards the smoldering ashes, where they made their seat along the small dug trench breaking the fire from the rest of the meager camp.
He removed dried apricots from his satchel, another dry biscuit and a hunk of cheese. Instead of salted beef, he offered her something fresh. Roast from the night before, cold yes...but still a great deal less tough. It was seasoned with garlic and a gravy that had rich portabellos until he'd plucked the meat from the dish and wrapped it in cheese cloth.
" Despite our meeting- I am sorry for your loss. In truth, they shouldn't be here. I knew the dangers, but they...they are here by accident. " He scoffed at the thought. " The work of a black rabbit in fact. Quite sinister. " he teased more at his situation than anything else.
She wondered if he knew her, or could guess at the contents dangling by her hips in mismatched pouches, as if plucked from travelers who grew too curious. Still, the game was afoot and she’d not quarrel as long as provisions were being offered. Birds and rodents were often her meal of choice, eaten raw while the bones were saved and kept for ungodly poultices. potions, poisons, and brews.
The upper row of her teeth stretched and clamped down first on the meat, pulling it apart as if in longing. The seasonings peppered her tongue and concocted an array of succulent noises from her in gratification. “Oh, it’s good. City food.” She masticated and ate swiftly, as if hurriedly feeding were a necessity in her daily norms.
When the meat was gone and the gravy wiped from her mouth, she plucked an apricot and stole a bite. “You speak of the others; the boy and the girl.” Her eyes glanced to the tent where the occupants still slumbered. She made no comment of the rabbit, guarding the secret behind questions. “Boy, you spoke of business. Past the stone steps. Do you know of the beyond?”
To the loss of her wolves, she gulped down a dollop of food and searched earnestly through his belongings for water. “There are others. My wolves.” They were not ordinary wolves, but like the black rabbit, were created from something else; something that already existed.
