As the sun rose, he greeted it with new eyes. The arcane power that had once glowed within them had been utterly depleted, instead, the willful man held an intense stare, even at rest. Something within him grew a great sense of his own mind- his own resolve. He needs nothing more than that to protect his family. The hours were met with coffee and deliberation. He was proud of Elyn. She'd been there, in the thick of it. Without her magic, and without her natural concern for her friends and family, he was not so sure they would've made it out so well underground. He knew it only made sense for her to rest, as dangerous as the mission had been- but as looked at his new daughter, swaddled and resting in her crib he couldn't help but wish to see the one who wasn't there. They had said goodbyes and then...well. Nothing had gone well. Without potential tragedy to hold her back, he was quite sure Elyn deserved to be sought out. Shelzi, while seemingly addled (as usual) should be able to see the baby for now. It was late enough in the morning that'd he'd not find Ardyn in her quarters- so Reign went there straight away. Knocking gently on his daughter's door. "Elyn, it's me."
After all the chaos, Elyn found the need to sleep everything off. Alone. For the first time she had sent Ardyn to his own room- not that they were exactly sharing a room... there were "rules" and such, but she wanted to figure out how she felt on her own. Shelzi, Reign, the baby, they were all safe and that was all Elyn wanted. At least that's what she thought she wanted before she retired to her room for the night. Instead of lingering with the others to figure out who this new person was or going to see her baby sister, Elyn could only think about how her heart still hurt. Mostly because now she and Ardyn could finally leave, but the argument with her father was still there. Not only that, but she hadn't even had the nerve to yell at him for how their family used Ardyn's body. It was nice that grandfather had a method of seeing his children, but it was still... Ugh. The young woman opened the door, staring up at Reign with hard violet hues. The moment she met his gaze, though, they softened. Everything Elyn wanted to say was suddenly forgotten as she rushed at him to wrap her around his waist.
Reign's body had not taken the stripping of his power particularly well. He looked, well- for lack of a better word- far less idealized. His jaw was hard and stern like his father- his hair had dulled in its luster but still looked quite unnatural. Perhaps it would never change. But his own violet gaze, normal hue, but intense all the same as if any moment they could flare with some different power.
He wrapped his arms around his daughter and squeezed. Lips pressing against her temple, words escaping his lips unbid. "Elyn, I should have come earlier."

She shook her head gently against him. It didn't matter that he hadn't been there sooner, he was there now. Elyn felt the change in him- once always able to feel the arcane power that came from his body... but now it was gone. Not that it mattered much to her; Elyn only wanted her father. However, Elyn could also understand the pain of losing a part of who they were. She couldn't imagine the world where she didn't have her magic. It saved her life more times than she wanted to actually admit. "Is Shelzi okay? Grace?"
" Shelzi is..." He began as he only then began to let Elyn loose from his embrace. "Grace is fine. Healthy. She's strong. Like you were, I imagine." He said as he gestured into her room. "May I come in?" He asked, simple in the request, and perhaps unwilling to talk about Shelzi just now, and in the halls.
A small frown touched her face as she pulled away. Elyn moved into the room, silently welcoming him in as she took a seat at the window sill. There were a few chairs there for him to choose from if he wished. "I'm sure she is," she spoke with a hint of a smile. Elyn was proud to be a sister. Yet the hesitation in his voice about Shelzi gave her some concern. What would happen to the family? She was leaving, there was a new baby, Reign lost his magic.... Elyn wondered if the Kaliba's would have any sort of happy ending in their life. She felt a little sorry for people like Milhin and... Ardyn! Maybe she could forgive her father for her, but there was something that made her feel uneasy. "Father, there's something I actually wanted to talk to you about. What does it mean to be a Kaliba?" She stared at him for a moment, trying to put her words together. "This whole legacy thing has me thinking, but it's really strange. I feel like being a Kaliba means taking what we want no matter the cost. We seem to... ignore others when it comes to trying to save our family... is that what we do?"
Reign looked at her, and despite her imaginings, and despite her great potential resistance to it all, he spoke with a calm tone. One correcting- but understanding. "What does it mean to be a Kaliba?" He shook his head. That wasn't the right question. "Legacy isn't something unique to us. I hope you have never lived under the constant strain of that burden. My legacy is a mixed, and ugly thing- I'd not have you or your sister judged against it. I have my own penance to pay, and I've never intended anyone else to pay it." He started, unwilling to let the topic of such grandiose implication weigh either of them down.
" Being a Kaliba- means taking what we want no matter the cost? If that were true, I'd imagine we'd have much more than we do now. " He said clearing his throat and sitting only after Elyn did.
"There came a time in your grandfather's life, oddly enough shortly before his divinity, that he decided he did not wish to rule any more than that which wanted to be ruled." He paused, considering what he just said. "What does that mean to you?"

Legacy was such a complicated thing for Elyn. She never really thought about it until Reign took her in, and even then she didn't think much of it. If anything, she thought more about Laelia, Verity, Victor... They had the legacy of Arc Kaliba to live up to. "I do not think us cruel, I know we are good people." She eyed her father cautiously, knowing well his history. Good people, who did bad things, maybe? Her shoulders gave a small shrug at the question. "Having Ardyn go into that girls mind? Arc taking over his body? I feel like he's in a tangled mess and it's all my fault. Shelzi had bad things happen to her too and..." She dropped her comment there, not wishing to speak of the loss of her uncle's lover.
That was a sore spot, one she was too late in recoiling to. For a moment, anger flashed but not at her. It was a sideways glance to the door. "Shelzi has had bad things happen to her, because of her decisions, Elyn. She toyed with forces she had no understanding of- and the backlash was severe. Remember that in your own dealings. I can say with certainty, Shelzi has not suffered because of our name."
He took a long breath and nodded his head acquiescing to her other point. "Ardyn understood much of what he did. It is not unique, for people to do extreme things to help those they love. That boy did much for that same purpose. But I must say, that as a Kaliba- Arc would've had our motivations be all the more pure in purpose, if not in execution. " " We took advantage of what the boy is. Ardyn is... unique. We've never found one like him, and the Codices, the records, they don't mention anything quite 'like' him. This encouraged experimentation. Trent was quite... demanding on what we attempted. You can rest assured, anything further- will not take place. I'll leave it all to your own arcane curiosity."
" To explain however what it means to be a Kali- no. An Arisalonian. Is that we would pay any price. Take anything, Perform the most heinous acts, if the math were right. I would not so quickly risk the lives of so many, nor cause so much pain as has been done these last few weeks, if I did not know that the people who are loyal to us were not made better, safer, stronger somehow. This city, there is nothing like it in the world. Her allies, shining examples of facets of humanity, often forgotten."
Reign smiled a small bitter smile. "To create space for that in a land as destructive as Tyran...requires sacrifice. Requires..pragmatism. Do not blame your Uncle, nor your Grandfather- overly much. I've thought it arrogance, but it is natural for men such as them to try and beat 'death.' I've made it clear, the boy is no lab rat- but in my attempts to talk to him, Ardyn doesn't seem interested- he'd rather forget it. I would talk to him if I were you."

Elyn knew Shelzi to be a goddess, but by the time she really got to know her, she only saw her as a mother figure in her life. It wasn't so much so that Elyn thought the family name to be blamed for everything, but a certain darkness did follow them around. She knew that it was human nature- even Arisalonian nature to protect the people you love and make sure you survived well in life. Yet something felt off. She was naive and a little angry, as if she just found out the world would never be fair. "I know he is." She understood their own curiosity as well as her personal one. Ardyn was special, even without all the romance. Elyn was attracted to magic- the way she could always see and feel it. It was partly the reason she attached to her father so easily when she first met him and why she was curious about Ardyn in the first place. "I do not blame them," she sighed. "In fact, do not think I am innocent either." She made excuses for their past, always defended her family in front of other without thinking... They meant everything to her. Until Ardyn showed her there was more to love than blindly following your family.
" I did you a disservice, protecting you from all this. " He glanced for a moment to the window. The city looked so peaceful now...despite the night before. " In trying to free you from expectation, I've left you ignorant of our history. Our philosophy. Elyn, you will find as you get older, that you will not age as other humans. You will find it all comes easier to you, then it will to Lilwen. As other friends grow weaker with age, you'll grow stronger. Our people, while not all gifted as such- had philosophies, ideals that guided their actions to avoid gross misuse, not gross abuse... of their power. " " Trent is who he is because of those lessons, and the understanding of what is at stake. Laelia is who she is, because of those lessons, and the understand of what is at stake. Those people couldn't be any different. You'll come to understand what I mean, Elyn. The way of life for our people is not always so crowded with darkness. This land, however, is."
