Laelia stood on the balcony in her office, overlooking the city. Her hands clasped behind her back, she stood in stoic silence as she muddled through the implications of the message she just received from Tyr's messenger. The Void would be attacking the Capitol to find remnants of Dawnstar's body. "And the gods continue to wreak their havoc even after they're dead." The Queen uttered to herself and began to pace slowly back and forth.
The Temple of Evil, of all entities, was sending forced to help secure the Capitol against invasion and would be making camp near the eastern gate. She wasn't exactly thrilled with this news. Sending troops should only have been done in collaboration. However, they were on the move and Laelia was not about to tell them to pull an about face. She would allow them to set up near the eastern gate. If nothing else, they would prove a decent barrier on that side to soften any enemies intent on breaking through. Laelia was not one to take chances and would have Capitol forces mobilized in second and third lines of defense to ensure that if Tyr's forces were overwhelmed, the city would not be breached without another fight.
She needed to call in her alliances. Laelia much preferred to handle things herself. There were fewer variables to screw things up that way. Too many Generals spoiled the battlefield just like too many cooks spoiled the soup. But it couldn't be helped. The Queen moved to her desk and began to write letters to Silem, New Arisalon, the Xenothrin, the Rage, the Sef, Night Haven and the Temple of Light.

Arcanus received the call for aid, only to see that his son was already hard at work organizing a response before the message was even received. This didn't surprise the old general. Trent had been warmongering in his own way for the last several years, part of that was for instances like this- in fact, such continued military strength needed an operation to galvanize and promote continued support.
New Arisalon had such a defense that it could of gotten complacent, especially with the crown being on Laelia's brow. But under Trent's leadership their forces had doubled in total strength, a troubling thing when that meant half viewed New Arisalon's Magister as the might behind the governing powers.
As he watched the divisions mobilize and leave outside the city gates through ring gates constructed by his son for quick emergency transit to the capitol (among other places) he could not help but consider that his time in the spotlight had receded once and for all.
***
To honor commitments to the Crown, and treaties signed that pre-dated Laelia's taking of it- Trent Kaliba, yearning to be home with his love and son, took the field. It was odd to see Trent out there, close enough to get his hands dirty- even more so to see him attended to by his apprentice, the wizard Lilwen.
He had studied the energy of this 'void', had come to understand it's limitations and composition. Lilwen had mentally brushed against this enemy, and Trent had been there to ensure she suffer no ill effect. The end result had been knowledg,e understanding that despite the power at their disposal it would take more than individual efforts to take care of the Void and the King who lingered within it.
Trent brought two legions to the Capital with all the support staff and complementary forces, including two assault groups of aerial calvary, engineers, a considerable corps of mages, healers, and even a group of irregulars assigned in loose cohort to support the scouts who had already been in the area.
The old forces of Arc Kaliba had been legendary, and most of them remained if not as aged veterans, then as generations who continued the honored tradition. But this new force was hybrid, the old and the new- more magical armament, more diverse strategies, more use of skirmishers, irregulars, and abstract tactics.
The Legion had changed in the years of Arc's disappearance. Changed in the time in which Laelia had ascended to her place as Queen. This army- not just the imposing discipline of the march- there was something resourceful. Ruthless even, that Trent had implanted into these men and women.

The Fifth Griffin Division was lead by Captain Victor Kaliba, recently decorated as the hero of Pax Sylvan and the man who crushed the Hordes of Uthragh Krull. Barely a day over twenty, Victor had his medals and his glory, his victories, and his nightmares. WIth a pending betrothal to the Princess of the Raven Islands, it had been decided that he and the Fifth Griffin Division would not fly recon nor calvary in the coming struggle- especially as they had performed so valiantly in the long war in the West. Captain Kaliba had vehemently disagreed. When told he would not be joining anyway, by Arc Kaliba- he did the sensible thing and took three-quarters of his team and left, not using the Ring Gates, but instead taking the flight there- in which they'd arrive in the evening. troop of the 5th Griffin Division

Calidus Thane kept busy. A master of mercenaries, he'd recently retired in that life to serve the Queen, or rather the nation. His loyalty to such provoked him to gather his private forces, a paltry one hundred men were available and close at hand- and gather all of the recruited Irregulars whose mission was not sensitive or currently underway.
The position of those troops, mostly worked to evacuate smaller towns in the potential line of battle, to buy what time they could for civilians. While the hardened members of the Irregulars were far more talented than any soldier, they also were wasted in conventional warfare. At least for now.
So- the hundred of his loyal men from the mercenary trade had supported the outer palisades at the Western gate. It'd be a hard fight, but they were game for it. Meanwhile the three hundred Irregulars were assigned to everything from scouting to making sure the army ate, including offering aid to the supply lines of the massive Temple of Evil force.
The night was quiet, and even seeing the Temple of Evil and there forces at one of the cities massive gates couldn't jar the sense of calm that had fallen over Calidus in those long moments in which things were beginning to take shape. This was a war in which even old gods participated. The opportunity for glory was thick...present above all things.

heard the call for aid and decided to help out. Lily came to the Capital with two minotaur blacksmiths, Three half giants and a plethora of other fae creatures from her kingdom. They sat up camp outside the gates of the Capital. A few of them, it was their first time out of the Fae Hallow.

She could not recall the last time she had felt quite so content or fulfilled. Preparing for war. When most would feel an overbearing sense of dread or foreboding, worrying for their troops in battle or for the continuation of their reign, the Queen felt excitement. Purpose. A use of the skills and knowledge that had been built and sharply honed in her since she was a child.
Moments like these were what Laelia Kaliba had been born for.
Pouring over maps, placing figurines denoting various military units in strategic locations and evaluating the merits and drawbacks of each placement? This was Laelia's favourite pass time.
"The walls of the city are outfitted with trebuchet and ballista." She said aloud, setting a miniature representing each war machine upon the map to indicate it's location. "Archery units will be placed at the front of each force to soften the enemy before they reach melee range. Once it appears melee is about to begin, the archers will fall back to the castle walls and continue their assault from the ramparts where they can fire freely and pick off any enemy that gets too close to the walls."

" But if you were wise, where would you place your infantry?" Came the voice, not Calidus- not Arc. But Trent. He had quietly entered the war chamber during the midst of this briefing, and standing off to the side behind them, only now spoke up.
" The Void's destructive power may eclipse our traditional strategic advantage- to say nothing of the fact that the Temple of Evil have provided so much 'aid' that to not defend their exposed flanks could be seen as cowardice to the people. " He said this not for the Queen's benefit, but instead to validate the hard decisions that would be made. They could not all stay behind walls.

Laelia glanced over her shoulder at her brother when he spoke up. "Good question." She chuckled, shaking her head with a roll of her eyes. "Worry not. I have no intention of leaving the Temple of Evil to defend the Eastern gate alone." And it wasn't because she was worried about cowardice. Quite frankly she didn't trust them. They were unorganized and self-interested. For diplomatic reasons she did not come right out and voice her distrust for them. Instead, she took her pieces that indicated the Capitol's infantry.
"The majority of my forces will be stationed here outside the Southern gate. It is the largest gate and the weakest point for entry because of that. But I plan to have second and third waves stationed behind our allies as well as fallback points should they be overwhelmed.." Or if someone got it in their heads to abandon the battlefield prematurely. "Clerics will treat the wounded at the fallback points. Air cavalry will offer support and distraction from the skies."

He nodded. Having had no doubt of the plan. " Where would you have us aid then? I brought two full contingents- honestly in case one of the loyal servants of the crown got less loyal all the sudden- or if some foolish try-hard decides to try and strike down the forces of evil. I'm half worried about that more than the Void. I've analyzed it's magic, they are countermeasures to be employed."

The corner of her mouth lifted. "I've considered the possibility of that happening myself. It's why I'm not aiming for a full integration of units." She considered for a moment. "Your forces would integrate well, however. They've been trained that way. Have the majority of your mages on the walls. I believe their offensive and defensive capabilities would be best used there." They could blast what needed blasting and ward the walls against physical damage. "Your aerial forces will join mine in the sky to repel any threats from the air. If you are worried about someone sabotaging the Temple of Evil's forces, perhaps have your infantry integrate with theirs?"

The docks of New Arisalon were an obvious destination for any newcomer to the city. Alric, newcomer that he was, had made no exception. The better part of the day had been spent not only taking in the breadth of the operation while enjoying the foamy sea breeze, but also in analyzing the various hulls that had made port or gotten underway. The numerous yet controlled point of ingress and egress. The areas that were exposed when the waves receded and where they battered themselves against protective walls, smoothing the stone.
It was impressive, simple, and reminded him of his father. Genesis had always told him that the overly complicated was sure to be undone by the weight of its own complexity. It was a lesson that had been stressed until Alric truly grasped its meaning—and here it was on display in full. He wondered a moment, his thoughts barely audible over the ambient crashing of waves and numerous ongoing conversations, if his father had ever been here at these docks. Wondered what he might have thought of them. Two men passing behind broke through his mental musings as one salty mariner referenced a place called the ‘Wretched Mile’. This caused the other to spit and declare that he would ‘never go back there… unless Cherry was dancing again’. Alric had no idea what any of this meant, but all of it made him want to stay longer to solve every mystery this place had to offer.

“Boy,” the father’s words froze Alric’s spine, something Genesis had intended to occur. He let the moment of apparent disappointment linger as his son pivoted to face him. For a moment they would both holdfast, maintaining each other’s gaze. Alric looked so much like his father that to an onlooker the scene would appear like two generations of the same person looking at themselves. The irony of such a paradox was not lost on either of them. “The first time I was here...” a gentle gust of salty air pushed the elder’s loose hairs to the right—like little tendrils reaching out. “The first time I was here, I was a mind determined. I was too busy to notice the subtle splendor here. Now though?” he raised his eyes up and brought them back down with a smile, “It is quite amazing, isn’t it?”
Alric was dumbfounded. He was sure his father had come only to scald him for coming here without permission. “How did you—”
“You are my son. If I didn’t know, what kind of father would I be?” he embraced his child in a warm hug. “I am proud of you, son. I came to tell you that you are your own man and from here on out, you will make your own decisions. Find your own way. You will make new friends and new companions. Together, you will write your own story and become a wind to shake the stars.”
Alric had made the rapid and jarring switch from fear to confusion. “Why are you telling me this now? I was packing to leave for a week before I got here.”
The smile slowly crept away from his face, “A call has been made. It came to me, as an old friend to an old family. There is need for people to stand together against something… Something no person can stop on their own. It’s on its way to the capital as we speak.”
Alric felt the confusion turn to alarmed concern, “Dad, wha… I don’t… I just got here and I haven’t heard anything…?”
Genesis placed a heavy hand on Alric’s shoulder, “I’m telling you now, son. There are people out there and they need help. Were I your age…” the thought was carried away with the tumbling waves. “My job is to stay here and do what I can should the events fail to be contained and spill out over this way. Yours—” his heart grew ten times as heavy as his hand, “Yours is to go. After that, the pages are blank and your story is yours to craft.” A father never enjoyed the thought of sending his son’s to battle, but in the sorrow grew another concept, one of pride. “I know you will bring credit upon yourself and your family. Go now, with your mother’s love and your father’s pride.” The ring on his hand started to hum with the arcane.
The son, knowing exactly what that ring would do, only managed to slip in a single “Wait!” before he was swallowed by ring gate magic. Where he instantaneously appeared, among the hybrid soldiers Trent had brought to the capital, he finished his shout, “Dad I-!” When he realized where he was, he lowered his head and allowed for a moment to hope he saw his family again soon.
With the resolve of a lion he looked back up at them, “I'm Alric Letlove. I was sent by my father to help.” When nobody said anything he added, “So I'm going to go figure out how to do that.” With a nod, he slipped between them and made his way to investigate the capital’s defenses and, perhaps more importantly, figure out what exactly they were defending against.

" I will take that under advisement." Trent said with a nod. " This should be.... intriguing. The Void is a unique threat in Tyran's history- a break from so many years of the same old thing. "
He glanced for a moment towards the window- the flight of griffins catching his eye. His brother had arrived.
"Agreed. Though I must confess I've been hiding something. Not on purpose, mind you. Only, the opportunity hasn't presented itself to discuss it, really." Laelia reached beneath her blouse and pulled forth a set of three keys upon a chain. "These were presented to me during a void battle. Their purpose is to close the prison of the Void Lords once we get the chance to do so. Each key is to be wielded by a specific person, to lock the cell."

" And who are those people?" He asked, curious at this moment. While he had ideas of how to 'survive' maybe even defeat the Void Lords- he had not considered closing the realm in whcih they came from again. He presumed that was a kind of a bias he should consider.
"The Key of Queens...should be fairly obvious." Laelia then indicated the other two. "They Key of Gods...requires someone who either is a god, was once a god, or who is a demi god. The Key of the Dead...requires someone who is undead to use the key."

Trent chuckled, " These things always seem so arbitrary. " he said with a shrug. " Well- I can guess the principle players easily enough." He said as he moved to the window.
" We will endeavor to make sure you and the others make it to where 'destiny' has foretold."

Who were those soldiers? I certainly haven’t seen them in the capital before. They bear some of the same colors as New Arisalon. Could they be from there? That would explain why my father had me arrive here. Perhaps he thought I would be among the familiar? If so, who commands them? His metal cogs twirling as he made his way past scores of royal engineers reinforcing the northern wall. Alric considered asking them, but they seemed preoccupied. Above, a squadron sized flight of griffins was soaring into view.
Aerial coverage. This was something the old man Letlove had stressed. Many armies had been routed by him because they had failed to see the utility of air superiority. There were not many that employed griffins as their chosen method of aerial dominance, though. I really need to figure out what we’re preparing for…

Laelia folded her arms over her chest and leaned a hip against the table. "I'm rather tired of it, myself." The corner of her mouth quirked. "It could be worse, however. Mordred almost got his hands on these keys. I barely beat him to them after the battle with the void spawn."
"Victor coming to my rescue too, eh? I have such good little brothers." She flashed Trent a rare teasing smile.
" If he stands still, he'll find himself at the altar. " Trent said with a smirk. " Wouldn't you go looking for your next fight?" he returned her teasing smile as he turned attention back to the maps.
"Have you reached out to Genesis?"

She had been in the capital looking for more sewing supplies, planning on making a few dresses for her daughters when murmurs on the streets gained her attention. Sure she had notice the increase of a military presense within the city, but until that moment she hadn't paid any mind to who it was.
Amrite stared openly at some of those that she knew were from the temple, and then hmmmed softly. There was only one person she would actually help in a situation like this. Amrite turned from her shopping and headed towards the capital, looking for the Queen.

"You know better than most that I have spent my life looking for my next fight. It isn't a bad strategy. It worked in my case." It wasn't often the two of them were able to reminisce about their younger days. "And what of you? Mother wasted no time making sure I knew I have a nephew. Congratulations, Trent."
"Genesis?" She canted her head. "I had sent word to New Arisalon. Is he not there?" She inquired.
" No actually. Since he returned with his son and wife, they've stayed somewhat distance until certain...consequences could be seen to." Trent said answering her question.
" As for the other part.... thank you. Kieran's been a loud, curious child. The demon blood in him.... it's stronger than I thought it would be, he wont be so young for long. I'll ensure you meet him before he's out of the cute stage."

"Nieces and nephews never stop being cute, Trent. No matter how demonic they are. Though I may change my mind. All the same, I'd like to meet him soon. Also...I'm glad you didn't faint." She smirked.
Trent nodded, " Well, my constitution seems to know no limits." he said with a small smirk as he turned to leave. " Get some rest before the battle begins. Nothing will happen tonight." he said with a shrug of his shoulders. " The Void conspires to keep me here as long as possible, I think... If only to piss me off."

It had occurred to Alric that all he had to do was listen and the city would give him the answers he needed. After a half hour of quietly gathering intelligence, or eavesdropping as some would call it, he managed to overhear a logistician who was directing the allocation of resources for this section of the capital. This was how he came to know that New Arisalon was indeed a player in the city. Still dont know who is flying the flag, though.
Several corroborating whispers between the more plain townsfolk confirmed that a 'void' or 'void spawn' was the coming threat. Alric had heard of this adversary in his studies, his father the thorough taskmaster that he was, but this was not a focus area. His knowledge on the enemy was thus limited to text and verbal instruction. Doesnt mean I cant be useful! I just need to find where I fit.

Verity Kaliba was stationed with the New Arisalon mages, assisting with unpacking trunks upon trunks full of spell components and ensuring they were organized in proper order. She had seen the griffons fly overhead, recognizing the large griffon her brother Victor flew. She grimaced slightly. Victor was likely to get in trouble for that one. He had been told to sit this one out. But of course that wasn't Victor at all. He couldn't just sit by and let the fight go on without him. Especially not when both of his sisters were involved.

Amrite wandered down different hallways, getting and giving deserved stares. She knew she stuck out, but with all of the others with swords and shields and armor and whatever, Amrite knew something was going on. She roamed different halls, sticking her head in various rooms until she found the right one.
"Good evening, Laelia." Amrite spoke. "Am I interrupting anything?" She nodded her head towards Trent as she passed him. "Good evening to you as well."

Amrite was allowed to explore in certain parts of the palace, other were off limits and cordoned off by guards shaking their heads and pointing the other way. If Amrite asked where the Queen was, she'd be directed to an office upstairs at the end of the hall.
Laelia glanced to the door to see Amrite of all people entering. Her head canted. "Amrite." She greeted curtly with a nod. "To what do I owe this visit?"

Alric paused to take a quick inventory near a city garden that's decorative flora was currently being trampled by supplies and foot soldiers. Let's see. I know how to operate and maintain most siege weapons, so I could be of use at the ballistas. I could fall in line with the infantry, the sword and shield are no stranger. I could try to link up with New Arisalon? Maybe the fact that I am Arisalonian will hold some kind of weight or usefulness? If all else fails, I could simply seek audience with the queen....?
His thoughts preoccupied him to the point he had forgotten where he had originally intended on going. As fate might have it, his feet had carried him in the vicinity of Verity. Didnt I see her somewhere? She looks so fa--Elysium! His memory came to his aid yet again. If only his brain had aided his eyes in not staring at her.

Amrite would respond as if she didn't notice the tone, because honestly she didn't care if Laelia was curt with her. It was Laelia, she assumed. "I saw a relatively large group of soldiers, some idiots from the Temple of Evil, and figured there was way too much armor now in the Capital for there to not be a large world ending threat coming." She smiled. "Either that or Mordred is stuck in Hell again. Considering how he has been out of contact for a good bit, I figure the odds are 50/50." Amrite folded her hands together and took a deep breath. "I wanted to see if you have some use of me. It's been a while since I've killed and I keep having urges like blood lust." She knew she was giving the woman too many details, but again Amrite didn't care. "So yeah.....the world is ending or Mordred is trapped. I'm more than willing to assist with either; whatever outcome you want." She started to look around the room then awkwardly smiled at Laelia.

Verity felt eyes on her. Well, more than usual. She knew she was an attractive young woman with long blonde hair and a pleasing figure. Not to mention the wealth and power of her family. Being watched was something she was familiar with. But she wasn't familiar with the young man who she'd caught staring at her with a recognition she didn't return.
"Hello." She said to the young man with a smile that was like a focused sunbeam had landed directly on him. Walking ball of sunshine and all that. "Are you lost?"

Laelia's brow furrowed with confusion. Amrite was offering to help? Admittedly odd. And yet not unwelcome. "I don't know anything about Mordred's whereabouts." She said with a shake of her head. "The void is preparing for an attack against the Capitol and it is through some measure of fortune that we've received advanced warning. The forces you see assembling are to defend against that threat. If you wish to assist in defending the Capitol from this invasion, I would be glad for your assistance."
Amrite nodded. "I can't say that I know anything about the Void." Amrite focused on the ceiling of the room trying to sort through her memories, her thoughts. "I also know that I am not good with weapons, very little strength." She paused a moment, and started pointing randomly at a wall. "The temple of the......" She cursed lightly under her breath, " Celestials........" She nodded and continued her sentence. "They said something about those things.......they fought them and were defeated."
Amrite looked at Laelia. "If a God lost, what do we need to do to win?"

The boy being caught looking at the girl--by the girl. A cliché of tales, but fortunately, despite her apparent beauty, his was not a gaze of lust but one of hope for an inroad to being helpful. Yes, but she doesnt know you recognized her... you are just staring at her from an awkward distance. Say something!
"Me? I was," he pointed randomly... in the direction of either a closed bakery or the dark alleyway adjacent to it. "Not heading over there. That's what I was... not doing." Yeah, this couldnt be going more smoothly. He shrugged and let the charade of him not being lost fall away. "I'm Alric. Alric Letlove. You could say I am a bit lost... Mostly just new, though. Not sure where to... Is there something I can help with? I thought I saw you at Elysium the other day and thought maybe you could... help me?" He was charming in his own way--maintaining the strength and resolve of a man even despite his honest lack of information. At the very least he seemed earnest.
