The sadness Verity felt for Moira's mother was overwhelming. She could not help but imagine how devastated her own mother would be if something like this had happened to her. Swallowing hard, Verity dipped her head again. "I will do the very best I can, Duchess. You have my word." They both knew what needed to be done in order to 'save' Moira. But Verity was as prepared as she could be.
She turned and raised her hand, taking hold of the crescent moon pendant that dangled from her throat. Her body was swallowed by the soft glow of moonlight, only to reappear some distance from Moira and the three legions under her command.
Alone, she tremored faintly and inhaled deeply for strength. The task before her was so incredibly daunting. But she was far enough away from the legions that if they should choose to make a charge towards her, she would have time to flee. However she didn't believe it would come to that. Verity believed that given Moira's hatred of the Kaliba name, the lich would be hard pressed to allow anyone else the satisfaction of killing House Kaliba's golden girl.
Casting a simple messenger spell, it would not be long before Moira received Verity's challenge.
Moira Zadkiel, I challenge you to a duel. Come alone if you wish another chance to finally end one of my House. The stakes are this: Should I win, your soul will be saved. Should I lose, I will be damned forever. I await you. Verity Kaliba.

At the arrival of the message, Moira's lips curled into a wicked smile. Deep, deep down, there was a tiny part of her that howled in pain at the idea of fighting the woman her brother fancied and the only decent Kaliba that managed to get to her heart. Moira made it very obvious that she disliked House Kaliba since she was young. They had far too much power and did more bad than good- despite the fact that her mother and the rest of the world seemed to loved them. However, her 'friendship' with Victor and Verity softened her opinion until a Kaliba turned her into a lich.
She was right all this time.
Moira whispered a spell that would send a portal to the one who sent the message. She didn't know Verity's location, but she assumed she was close. Too close. This was a personal matter and it didn't need to be played out in public. Should she enter, it would take the Sunshine Girl away from the war and into a more secluded place a few miles outside of Silem. Moira was already there.
Dull white eyes would stare at Verity.
"I wish it wasn't you, but the one who did this to me," there was a hint of honesty in her voice. Moira's soul no longer cared for anything other than revenge and hate. Whether she was fighting Silem or a Kaliba, Asmodeus was in control of her now. "I hope you're ready to lose again, because I won't this time." She spoke of their fights against Kieran.

After ensuring there were no hidden tricks within the portal, Verity stepped within and arrived and the sight of Moira squeezed her heart painfully. Her blood ran cold. Her fury had been vented on Kieran, and her grief, her thirst for answers. Both had been quenched. And now there was only sad resignation in her features.
"I'm sorry this happened to you, Moira. I truly am. Victor and I tried so hard to kill him for you. To avenge you. I want you to know that."
"I wish it wasn't me, too. But I'm the only one who can." Her head canted and the corner of her mouth curved sadly. "Try your best, Moira. And know that whatever happens, I will always consider you my friend."

At the end of Verity's words, Moira scowled. "Friend? Pathetic."
Without another word, Moira drew her sword. Alec wasn't the only one who had private lessons behind their parents back- though the siblings had very different reasons for believing that they should train. Not to mention Sinead's training was no longer useful for the lich who used dark magic.
The sword itself didn't look fancy; an ebony blade with a silver hilt that had an emerald gem in the center. However, around the blade were small traces of black magic. Anything it cut, would cause the area around the wound to rot.
Moira ran towards Verity, knowing well she had to move fast to try and avoid any spell that Verity could throw at her. She hoped that close range combat would give her the upper hand. Moira brought her sword hand up and in front of her before attempting to bring it back down against the left side of Verity's shoulder.

Verity said nothing more, unwilling to take the words of the lich personally. Moira's soul had been twisted, corrupted. She wasn't expecting the lich to return the sentiment.
The moment Moira drew her sword, Verity recognized the aura surrounding the blade. It was similar to the one on Kieran's blade, the one that had wounded her so grievously. She knew she did not want to get caught with that blade.
Taking several steps back to give herself a bit more time before Moira reached her, Verity spoke the word that activated her arcane contingency spells. "Contingentiam." They were defensive spells that sprang into effect simultaneously upon the uttering of the command word. Several shimmering colours signaling the activation of several spells washed over her body and then dissipated as quickly as they had appeared. Such spells would reinforce her armour with arcane enchantments, among other things.
When Moira closed the distance, Verity brandished her double bladed staff with both hands, raising the staff to intercept the lich's overhand strike before it could descend upon her shoulder. Verity's arms shook from the force of the blow, but she quickly recovered. With a heaving breath she side-stepped to her left (Moira's right) and pulled the right end of the staff back towards her body quickly while snapping out the left, sending the blade slashing towards Moira's right armpit and the vulnerability that typically existed in armour there.

Moira sword under her breath as she spotted the flash of magic wash over Verity. She had hoped to get there sooner, but a part of her knew that Verity had far more training than Moira did. Some of those spells, she once knew, but could no longer use.
When the blade clashed, Moira jumped back with a huff. If she was going to make a mark, she would have to do better next time.
Verity managed to run the tip of her blade along the grey flesh of Moira's underarm. Black bile dripped onto Verity's blade, but the wound wasn't fatal. It did, however, cause her to groan in pain. Her face was a mixture of anger and agony.
Moira lunged forward again, zigzagging around the blade towards the outside left of Verity's figure. Her left hand (and sword hand) was in front of her bringing the sword in towards her before swinging out toward's Verity's neck.

"First blood goes to me, Moira." Verity said breathlessly, taking no pleasure in the announcement. It wasn't normally in her strategy to taunt her opponent, but she needed to throw Moira off. Get under her skin. Make her angry and foolish because of it. And she knew Moira's temper was easily manipulated.
The lich pressed forward and Verity struggled to backstep, raising her staff to the side to block the swipe at her neck. The blade deflected off of the staff but the tip of it caught against Verity's right forearm and drew blood as it slashed through the mithril weave of her battle coat.
Her teeth gritted, hissing as her eyes flashed in pain. That was it. Moira was too close. While Verity was adept enough to defend herself for a shirt period of time, she was not a melee fighter. Her talents were best served behind a warrior, casting spells. She couldn't hope to maintain a melee against Moira for very long. And so she took advantage of one of the wands tucked into a specially designed holster on her belt.
The beauty of wands was that the casting time was almost instant, and so she did not require much time or distance to ready the spell. The skirts of her battle coat caught the air elegantly as she nimbly danced around Moira, spinning to her left (Moira's right). As she spun, she maintained her staff with her left hand while drawing a plain birch wand from her belt. As she came out of her spin, she planted her feet firmly to the ground and raised the wand, pointing at Moira's right side point blank.
"Redipiscor!" Verity shouted and from the tip of the wand hurtled what could only be described as a battering ram of gale-force wind. That wall of force would impact Moira like a brick wall if she wasn't able to dodge it - a feat that would prove difficult at point blank range.

"Oh, shut up!" It was working. Moira's anger increased with every attack they made. Not that this Moira was the real one. At least before, Moira always maintained respect and composure, but now it was gone. She hated Verity and the rest of the Kaliba's more than ever. Was there anything left to save?
When she finally managed to cause Verity to bleed, it was Moira's turn to mock her. She gave out a small, proud laugh. All she had to do was keep this distance between them and tire Verity out.
"First blood means nothing here, Verity." She spat the woman's name with disgust. Moira noticed Verity reaching for something, but Moira was too late in trying to grab the woman's hand. Verity was already dancing around her.
There was a yell, a leap, and another cry of pain. Moira managed to move so that the impact of the wind wall wasn't directly on her, but the strength of it still knocked her back a few feet onto her knees. Moira screamed with exasperation.
"You can't save me! You were too late last time and you're too late now!"
There was nothing logical about Moira's plan of attack as she lifted herself back on her feet. She simply charged forward, prepared to swing wildly when she got close enough to little miss sunshine.

She didn't waste time trying to fit the wand back into the holster and merely cast aside to the ground for the moment. Verity needed that hand free and time was of the essence. Her forearm throbbed with the pain of the wound Moira had inflicted and she knew she needed to get at least initial treatment for it as soon as possible to reduce the effects of the baneful entropic magic.
As the lich was knocked to her knees Verity took the opportunity to put as much distance between them as she could to give her time to cast. Moira's screams broke Verity's heart. But Verity was resolute in her purpose, despite the tears that sprang to her eyes and rolled down her cheeks at what she was about to do to her friend.
"I know." She said sadly. "And I'm so, so very sorry, Moira. But I will set you free. I promise." She said with determination before she lifted her gaze to the sky. As her fingers traced various symbols and runes in the air, drawing energies from the weave, combined with energies from the source of Light, Verity spoke spidery arcane words.
"De caelo inlustret lumine - Sol Invictus!" Her voice climbed in volume until it reached it's crescendo, upon which the clouds in the sky parted above. Radiant light, the angry purifying heat of the sun combined with the gentle warmth of a loving embrace descended upon Moira from on high as Verity lowered her raised hand with a flourish to indicate the lich as her target for the blast.

The voices inside of her own mind nearly drowned out Verity's words. They all tried to tell her that she was right, Verity was the enemy, and all of it would be over soon. Only one voice, did she truly believe: that it would all be over soon. She didn't know how or who would win, but this battle would be her last.
At the parting of the cloud, Moira stopped to look up at it.
"No...." she mumbled. And when Verity spoke, Moira screamed the word again. "NO! STOP!" She continued her run, but by the time she even reached Verity, her whole body stung. "Make it stop!!" Her feet gave in, and her body fell to the ground. It felt worse than what Kieran did to her.... this was destroying her from the outside in, where before it was just amplifying her own hate. It was easy to get lost in everything that the darkness could give her, but the light? It was harder to go back.
The Lich's body curled up into a ball on the ground. She was slowly dying.

As Moira fell to the ground, Verity dropped her staff and hurried to Moira's side. She took the precaution of kicking the lich's sword away to ensure it was out of reach before she sank to her knees and pulled Moira into her arms. Reaching into her pocket, she fished out the coin Kieran had given her. The one that would sever the shackles between Moira's soul and the undead body she had been cursed to inhabit.
She placed the coin on Moira's chest, just above her heart and held it there as she slowly rocked the dying girl in her arms. Tears rolled down her cheeks and dripped into Moira's hair. "I'm so sorry..." She whispered. "This is the only way to free you."
But Verity would ensure that Moira did not die alone. That she died in the arms of someone who loved her. Even if they were a Kaliba.

Anger still pulsed through the Lich's veins. She would swat Verity, at first, but eventually she grew too tired and just let the woman hold her. Only when her moans of pain finally died down, could she actually speak again.
"I know," she said as she put her hand over the coin. "I am so..." whatever she was about to say never made it passed her lips. The exposure to the light burned far too much and once the separation of soul and body began, the lich couldn't hold on any longer. She fell limp in Verity's arms.
A shimmer of light came up behind verity, peering down at the woman and the dead body with a wrinkle of its nose. The figure exposed large white wings before bending forward to kiss the kneeling Verity on top of her head. Suddenly, the light vanished from sight.
Unknown to Verity though, the light didn't quite vanish. A small flicker, no bigger that a stone, faded down over Verity's heart. She might feel a small sense of warmth or perhaps a little prickle along her skin. Either way, for Verity... it was not the end of Moira Zadkiel.
