Victor couldn’t control people, couldn’t fire lightning from his fingers, and he couldn’t make people tell the truth. He did however know that the mind when properly sharpened cuts better than any sword. He also knew the strongest armor, strongest shield, was foresight. These ideas were more real to him than most things. They were the words of his Father, passed down by his Big Sister. He had heard them, magically through his Father’s own voice- in the archives.
Victor smiled. Patterns. Predictability. It made the perfect plan for his note. He knew Verity would play for mother soon- she was an excellent musician, an excellent singer. He loved his sister, admired her, adored her, protected her. It was hard to leave his twin behind- even for a little while. But the Deep Wood would not allow distraction.
He hid the note, and the journal, and made his escape. (As seen “In the Shadow of the Past” under the General Storyline Folder.)
Dearest Mother,
I left this letter hidden under Verity’s sheet music. I knew she’d practice, or barring that- you’d have her play this for you. I hope the music put you in a good mood. I hired a boy to pose as me on the training yards, and I made sure Vargas knew I was going to join the regiment on a drill. You are no doubt quite sure I’m safe, and I am!
I left New Arisalon last night if all went according to plan. It’s best not to tell you how, as you’d probably strain yourself (you need to rest!) trying to find whoever would aid me in leaving.
I’m safe, and I’m certain I’m doing what I should be doing. Father left something for me, just like he left something for Verity- she’ll know it soon enough. I just, I have to go find it. I hope you don’t worry about me, and I’ll be sure to send you letters. ( I stole one of Trent’s journey books and hid it under Verity’s gambeson. I doubt she’s been practicing wearing armor so I’m sure it’s still there.
I don’t expect to be back too soon- as I know my search is going to take time. But you can write me in the journey book too- just don’t be all worried. You have enough going on. Take care of Verity especially. She was crushed while you were asleep. Look out for Elyn, she blames herself for not doing more. We all do. Trent needs your love too- He’s different Mama. So is Milhin, a lot different from the books.
I think he’s hurting. And while he wants the same things we all do- I think he has no issue with hurting the world to get it. You’ve told us, that Love can light the way. I know that you are right. It saved my Father, it guides me, and it’ll save our family again.
I love you, Mama.
Seriously Quite Safe,
Victor
Along the back margin was a little note.
Verity,
You may never lie, but that doesn’t mean you don’t snoop! I love you, little sister. I promise our time apart will be short and will be worthwhile.
Victor
