Tyran had always been a land of change. The very land seemed to be morphic, rising with the tide of history and falling with the ebb of entropy. Some people said it was the magic. Some people said it was the people. Wise people knew it was both. Tyran was full of greatness, wild possibility, and often had ‘transplants’ of people who could change the course time and time again.
Those people seemed to live forever. Seemingly god-kings and eternal beauties ruled over the land, protecting it and threatening it in equal measure. It happened suddenly, but that era seemed to end with the death of Camien, followed by Rayelina, followed by a few others- and even the Usurper Mordred. The people who had never cared much about who ruled them cared even less.
The realities of the changing of eras hit some places harder than others. The presumed death of Arc Kaliba had sent his legacy, the City of New Arisalon into a volatile state, one only recently made stable through the resolve and patience of Rosewyn Kaliba, and the intervention of her son, the powerful wizard and Trent Kaliba. But away from the world’s stage, there was another place struck horribly by the death of so many powerful people across the years.
The Barony of the Pauper Prince. To the south of New Arisalon, far enough to be ‘too far’, laid the Vale of Steam, named such by the odd location of hot springs hidden within an extremely fertile valley that opened up into an expanse of hills flattening into farmland. The pastoral setting that unfolded matched well with the more exotic Vale of Steam, a study in minute contrasts.
Somehow in the confusion, the villages of the Barony came to find that the castle of their baron, a mischievous trickster said to of won his nobility on a bet had died in the cataclysm- his castle quite literally sinking into the earth several yards with no sign of inhabitants. This spelled a slow doom for the Barony. Bandits and monsters both, unchecked- trade horrifically interrupted, this once promising place lead by an entrepreneurial baron, was now less than a backwater.
It would not stay that way. Hearing of the plight and situation, Trent Kaliba did what his father would do. He sent someone to figure that shit out. Finding the world in desperate need of ‘someone’ he decided it was a fair enough test for the youngsters, who after saving the city were mostly resting on their victory or engaging in repetitious training. In time, he’d send them- and others. It was past time the new generation began building something- before Tyran in its habitual self-mutilation would tear it all down again.
It was the reports of the hired mercenary Calidus and his troop that formed the intelligence used to create the first missions and recruit the first teams. He’d search the land over for anyone willing to help settle the location, supporting those already there- and knowing it would be a gritty, long, and dangerous process to live in this forgotten barony.

So you want to play:
The Forgotten Barony Campaign is a sandbox style adventure series in which multiple writers will author events focused on a variety of villages, points of interest, and the Castle of the Pauper Prince. They’ll be dungeon adventures and quests, they’ll be forum challenges, room play, and slowly the building of a barony within Tyran, in which many players can call home. I think this serves a purpose (as opposed to complaining) where we can build a story together- if you’ve got the gusto to do it.
A few caveats. Don’t bring godlike power into this. They’ll be a dice system utilized for events, and while I will ascribe bonuses to well thought out ideas or play, for the most part, this will be a ‘realistic’ high fantasy. It’s still Tyran, magic is prevalent and amazing. But swords are still sharp.
Don’t get upset when players pair up, but instead know that the authority giving missions and organizing teams will endeavor to make each ‘strike team’ or pioneer group even, and mixed so everyone gets a chance to interact as much as they want to.
Bring a character that is young or old, but make them fit the idea of pioneers. This ‘rediscovery’ of land is going to be a fun opportunity to define your character with acts of bravery, intelligence, and general greatness.
Sign Up your character as part of this thread. Answer the following questions:
Why would your character go on a mission to explore this place? What is their main goal? Why would Trent recruit your character for this mission? What do you bring to a team?
In the coming days, I’ll be releasing the system- with instructions on how to ‘build’ your character for it. If you’re interested, post below.

Zephyr Kaliba:
He would be recruited because he is Trent's nephew, is a decent fighter, and is a loyal representative for House Kaliba. He has been itching to prove himself in situations more distanced from his immediate family, and this would serve that purpose.
Zephyrs goals are to impress his family, hone his skill and prove he is a valuable asset capable of being trusted. He also wants to get out of New Arisalon and meet different people.
Zephyrs confidence, skills with a blade, his speed and agility, and his innate shadow magic make him a valuable addition to any team.

Lilwen would go because she's eager to please the Kalibas and to prove that she's useful. She's curious to a fault and would see this project as a massive puzzle she's itching to solve. Idolizing these people she's read about in history books and heard about in stories, legends, and myth, she's desperate to find her place among their number.
Trent would recruit Lilwen because she's currently training under him and has familial ties to the Kaliba family. This mission would be a valuable learning experience for her and a chance to test her mettle.
Lilwen is very smart, a born researcher and scholar with great magical potential. She's a flyer, extremely skilled in the air when riding her thunderbird, Phaen, and fearless when they're in the sky. She's also friendly, easy and comfortable for others to be around, and works very well in a team.

Why would your character go on a mission to explore this place? What is their main goal? Why would Trent recruit your character for this mission? What do you bring to a team?
Raylinn would go in order to avoid being identified as Princess of the Raven Islands. She's hungry for adventure and fascinated by the wealth of magic in Tyran. It's also a convenient place to go, outside the Palace where the risk of blowing her (pathetic) cover is the highest. This mission promises danger and adventure, and Ray is an adrenaline junkie.
Trent might not actually recruit Ray for this mission. She's only 15 and looks even younger with her slight build and delicate features. Although, if her true identity is known he may send her just to keep tabs on where she's at, let her stretch herself to learn about her limits and capabilities, and out of sheer curiosity for what she'll do. Whether he recruits her or not, Ray is not above trying to sneak out of New Arisalon, steal a horse, and make her own way there - she's got experience in being a stowaway. She's not above lying to the others once she arrives, either.
Ray is a born fire starter. The fire is always there at her fingertips, pressing her to be released. But she's also a daredevil, unafraid to do much of anything. She has moderately trained with blades, spear, and staff, although her slight build lends more to speed and agility than brute physical strength. Quick to anger, quicker to forgive. Being a princess, she has been trained in how to run large settlements (such as House holdings and villages) and is very knowledgeable regarding restructuring and rebuilding (the Islands have been rebuilding from a terrible civil war her entire life.) She's naturally bossy but also has a huge heart.

Verity Kaliba:
It's possible Trent would send his little sister in an attempt to toughen her up a little and encourage a bit of independence from Rosewyn. To send a group of reckless teens into danger, it would be wise to send them along with a healer capable of mending wounds and other types of support and protection magic.
Verity would want to go on the mission because her brother has already been on one of his own and she doesn't want to be shown up. Also she doesn't want to be separated from her cohort or friends and would want to help keep them safe.
Verity offers strong healing magic, protections and buffs to the team, as well as patience and compassion. A moral compass. Also, she's a walking polygraph. Difficult to pull the wool over her eyes.

Why would your character go on a mission to explore this place? What is their main goal? Why would Trent recruit your character for this mission? What do you bring to a team?
Peter is always traveling from place to place and while he works mostly with Orias as his shop he does get out to go see the world as he is still young for a fae. HIs main goal would be to help bring life back into this place. He has an affinity for plants and getting things to grow in harsh condition and would want to help rebuild as i's in his nature to want to help.
With Peters natural proclivity for plants also come the knowledge of which plants are good to eat and which plants are not as well as the knowledge of which plants heal. Trent may hire him to come in for the healing aspects because when going into combat you should always have a healer.
Peter brings the aforementioned healing skills, botanist skills and magic that can grow or kill plants at an alarming rate, with an immunity to poison. Weaknesses include fire, cold Iron, ice , blight

Black would go along because he enjoys taking the world and creating something new from it. He wants to make something of this world truly his own. His normal haunts had grown tiresome after all. Alternatively he is still trying to find his own place. Acceptance it welcome, but not necessary
He would be chosen as he is somewhat notorious for slaying troublesome creatures that are prone to attacking livestock or farms. Black has claimed bounties on all manner or orcs and goblins. He's become very well known as a hunter that can exterminate that form of pest.
His main strength lies in his blades, though he is a capable tracker and woodsman there really are not many who can compete with him on equal terms. He is also aware of what it would take to live in the wilderness and in essence reestablish structure. To lay it out flatly, Black Hawk is protection, from enemies, from starvation, and the elements.
