In dreams- Children had more power than anyone knew. They were not bound to the stories our minds tell themselves after days of drudgery or the toil of responsibility. For Verity, her dreams had a constant reminder of something she could never quite grasp. Sunflowers. A field of them, seem to pop up in most every dream she had- somewhere or another.
She had gone to sleep not long after Victor's departure, but with some measure of fitful attempts. Once more, she found herself surrounded by sunflowers- and nearby was a stone house with a tile roof, and thick mortar spread between and atop the stone to hold it all in place. She stood behind the house as the sun was setting. The sunset at this angle, it filled the field with brilliant light. A tree with branches spread like a fan obscured just enough of the bright rays that she didn't have to squint. Perhaps that is why she could see a black cloaked figure creep around the left-hand side of the house to the front- just out of view.

A field of sunflowers stretched as far as the eye could see, and the only break in them was a small stone cottage and a tree offering just the slightest bit of shade in the glare of the setting sun. Verity walked barefoot in her nightgown, which would have been strange to her if she were awake. But in dreams, nothing seemed strange. Not even the fact that she always seemed to dream of sunflowers. Everything made sense in dreams.
Dream-Verity wasn't the slightest bit bothered by her state of dress, and was more concentrated upon the vast array of flowers surrounding her as she seemed set on a collision course with the cottage. It was just the luck of that bit of shade that allowed her to see the black-clad figure creeping around the side of the house. Who was it? The figure seemed rather out of place.
And so Verity followed, bare feet heedless of the soil beneath them and between her toes. She ducked around the right-hand side of the house, determined to sate her curiosity and meet whomever the cloaked person was at the front of the house.

The house was drafty, somehow colder inside than outside in that field of sunflowers. Entering in after the dark figure, who left the door open after going inside the sight was horrifying.
The figure seemed composed of a thick and inky darkness and its movements writhed with an unnatural motion as if all joints snapped in ever movement. The shade was craned over someone concealed by the shade's form, the form sitting in a chair, or rather reclining in it. It turned on her, revealing the figure as someone very familiar.
He was wearing long robes, his face young- but weathered as if all joy had been drained from it. Trent looked as if he was lost in endless slumber, arms hanging dead in their sway from the chair. The shade had no face, but instead deeper contours of shadow, of entropy, only broken by a baleful gaze of two pinpricks of light that seemed to grow wide at her approach.
The shade made a sound, a kind of long croak as it rose to its full height, seeming to fill the room. Genderless, only carrying a form of sharp edges and angles the mouth hidden among its shadowy composition released a hideous screech that hurt the very soul threatening to break all sense of reasoning. It was as if madness was looking down at her, and long treacherous claws reached out to seize the girl as a peal of thunder announced a storm in the distance.

Behind the shade, Verity's bare feet fell on the wooden floor of the house in silence, and she could feel the distinct drop in temperature on her toes. The erratic movement of the shade was unnerving, the stuff of nightmares. It made her skin crawl and her muscles tremor with anxiety.
It loomed over someone, and it wasn't until the shade realized her presence and turned to face her that she saw who it had been leaning over. Her brother Trent, slumped in a chair. Verity cried out at the sight. "Get away from him!" Her voice shrill with terror.
The sound of it's croak set her teeth on edge, caused the hair on her arms and at the back of her neck to stand up. Her breath caught in her throat as it screamed, the girl's hands clapping to her ears as she squealed in denial.
The shade reached for her and Verity froze, unable to move. She gasped for air, feeling as if her entire body had become paralyzed. She could barely breathe, and her trembling was so violent it rattled her teeth.
But Verity was a walking ball of sunshine. The girl who cast no shadow. And as it's claws bore down upon her, something burst inside of her. An innate defense mechanism intolerant of this darkness perhaps? At the barest of contact, like a solar flare, light blazed into existence around her. It engulfed the shade and illuminated the entire room.

When the light dimmed and all could see- there was no man in the chair. There was no shade. There was nothing. No chair, no house, no sunflowers- just a darkness that seemed to be breaking in spidery cracks as if glass about to give to enormous pressure. When the darkness finally shattered it did so letting in a torrent of water- or at least it sounded like water. When it fell and lapped against her slippered feet, it was warm. Thick. As it rose past ankles, knees, hips, waist, stomach, it seemed as though it'd never stop- the flashing light that could be seen too faint, too inconsistent. As it threatened to overtake her despite any struggle to swim she tasted it. Copper. Bitter. Iron. Blood. The last thing she could see was the gathering storm that offered the only light the land could see- as it flooded itself with the blood of countless. As she began to struggle to reach a surface that seemed out of reach, it was not many moments before lungs gave out, even here. Even in this nightmare. As awareness left her, she could hear that yawning intake of breath. She could feel it. The Hunger. A void that could not be filled. A Gaping Maw, Slathering and unable to be satiated. ***** She awoke, not in her bed- but in another field of sunflowers. Her dress was warm and stuck to her, her skin tainted with the hues of dried blood. As eyes opened the, flood of crimson was gone- no sign to it. Just another evening... Until the sky, a light only be a storm caught her attention with a peal of thunder.

The darkness, so quiet and full of nothingness that it was almost peaceful, shattered. Verity screamed with fright as viscous crimson liquid rushed to the floor, rising rapidly until it rose so high she felt herself lift from the floor. Despite her attempts to swim, it dragged her under and with another gurgling scream the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.
Panic overwhelmed her as she struggled, unable to tell which direction was up or down. The girl was not religious per say, but in that moment she prayed to whatever deity might be listening to help her. Prayed for her twin to help her.
Her lungs gave out, and she felt the blood consume her as she inhaled it into her lungs, into her stomach.
And then she awakened with start, rising up and gasping for air. Panting heavily, she stared with widened eyes at her surroundings. Sunflowers. Sunflowers again. But she was safe. Wasn't she? Her gown, sticky with warm blood clinged her and she hastily stood to her feet, looking down at herself. It was in her hair, on her skin, staining everything.
Thunder rumbled and she gasped, attention drawn to the looming storm in the distance. In vain she tried to wipe her bloody hands against her bloody gown, and staggered off in the direction of the storm.

"Daughter...."
It was the faintest voice, and despite the lack of volume, it held a strength. The voice was familiar, but one she had not truly heard save once- even that it was a mouth piece, nothing quite this clear. The crackle of lightning drew attention to the dark clouds, clouds that swirled in slow circles- something above her revealing shape the longer she looks.
" Seek the field, like this one. You do not have much time. The Hunger makes its move."
Above her she could see it, the storm in its perpetual motion hide something high above seeming to blanket the land. It was when the clouds were broken amidst the rain that it became evident.
A maw, teeth the size of parapets, countless in number- A great titanic maw, seeking to devour the world.
***
The chirping of birds in the garden brought alertness, but unlike any other dream- this one was clear in memory and repeated most nights.
