It is without a doubt that the Captain Richard the Stormbringer was one of the most intimidating men on all the sea. His place in history is in question among sailors and pirates alike- but one can point to his naval victories and admire his boldness. As a young captain of a schooner, he was foolhardy enough to mount artillery on the small vessel. The boat was light, it was nimble, and it surprised anything it got close enough for- often playing dead in the sea to draw a vessel in for a broadside it would never expect.
As he grew, Captain Richard had the distinction of inflicting great casualties on any ship he set his eyes upon, especially once joined by a man who would one day lead his vanguard, Dustin. An appointed Captain of the Wretched Mile, Captain Richard was one of the few who received a token from the Governess- and he used this and Dustin to drive endless raids building his fleet into something resembling a fighting force.
As time went on, Dustin shaped the crews of any ship he served upon, never taking full command- but leading the vanguard and thus becoming the man people looked to when danger settled and blood ran hot.
One day, the capital ship was pressed into service- sailing to hit the port town Lynth, a place more village than town boasting some 186 souls. They had no chance when Dustin hit the beach- arrows flew- swords were gathered for defense, but nothing stopped Dustin and his men. It was all over in less than two hours, and when it was- Captain Richard bravely walked into town, dozens of men in told carrying not chests for treasure but chains.

Now to tell this story, you have to be aware my reader, that Dustin was not Dustin. You also need to be aware, that despite the gruesome lack of morals the denizens of the Wretched Mile possessed, there were some things not often tolerated. A few, (of which they are few) rape. Some say this is due to decency, others say that it's another mark against the Marquis' legacy.
No one really cares. That might be because rape has essentially turned into a capital offense up there with murder (without the consent of the Governess) .
People of course still do it- as the actions on the broad ocean scarcely make it back with any evidence at all. But within the Wretched Mile? It's as sure as the sun rises that you'll be hanging (if lucky) by the morn. This is not much for rules admittedly, presuming only the least amount of civility. But they are other things that the often anarchistic 'citizens' have trouble tolerating.
Dustin, who is not Dustin held on of these *other things* quite close to heart. Unfortunately for the Village of Lynth, Captain Richard had no such compunctions as he shouted his orders. "Alright, you filthy bilge rats! I want the women chained, the men killed, and all the children gathered- some will be kept, others- we'll leave them behind." Killing a child you see, is generally seen as bad luck.
Dustin-Not-Dustin gritted his teeth and did as he was commanded.

The total haul from Lynth was somewhere close to 800 lbs of sugar, 40 crates of various foodstuff, gold and other objects that'd sell well enough to the fences, and finally 47 women. Great Zeus could hold it all with room to spare. A boasting 26 guns- the beauty of the Great Zeus was the mortars it used to great effect in the open ocean. The cargo hold was fit for prisoners well enough- long rooms no more than hallways ran below decks with doors and iron portcullis to seal them up.
The women were chained ruthlessly along a long bar that ran down the hallway on the floor until giving way to the next bar. The hallway was dark, cramp, the air would soon rank with the smell of human beings kept below, with little more than a series of nearby troughs.
Captain Richard insisted they ensured the women were kept in living condition as the set sail from the now destroyed village of Lynth to cross the sea to the Slaver that had brokered this deal. The women would be kept for a season within a brothel- taught their new reality, and then auctioned off when the time would permit.
Dustin-not-Dustin rested in the knowledge when they dropped the Women off that they'd not be sold for nearly a month.

It took Dustin-Not-Dustin two weeks to find the soft exposed flesh of Captain Richard- where he was truly exposed. Trafficking women slaves might not have been enough to shift him from the oft fickle favor of the Governess. Dustin-not-Dustin presumed it would, but he needed more. More to ensure that if he struck out he'd not gain a promotion *and* a debt.
Captain Richard had never been too loyal to the Marquis, and his affinity for cannon was enough reputation to ensure a seat at the table just scraping by the skin of teeth. It is no surprise he was not loyal to a woman, regardless her reputation. As the story grew older, and the eye witnesses engaged in the sport of piracy, a thing in which such events are rather common some measure of the story faded. Reputation had to be constantly maintained- and with the punishments meted out for infractions upon the loose code, it was often strong among the meager, even among the accomplished. But to those who thought themselves gods of the sea? They had tragically short memories.
It is the Author's opinion that Captain Richard may have been a plant. A test for the intended recipient of the token, a rat to ferret out. Anyone could claim loyalty, but to be both loyal and ambitious? A wise leader would have need of that. Also, the Author has doubts that the Mile would've produced ten captains of competence on a level with the audacity shown by The Governess and Darren the Black.
Dustin-Not-Dustin found the chink in Captain Richard's armor in his arrogance. It didn't take long to discover his growing efforts for a conspiracy, hence the slave trade, and hence the need for coin. He had a large group ready to back him, and a plan that'd need time to hatch. Dustin-Not-Dustin needed only to spark the proper invitation.
Captain Richard didn't have a problem when they returned to the Mile of letting Dustin off with a sloop, and the small crew that took care of her. Dustin had amassed the crew for him, and his brave leader of the vanguard had even been the one to provide the ship- a 'payment' for his commission. Let it go on the record that the Author pities Captain Richard, a traitor- from being able to see one so clearly in front of him.
Just as Captain Richard may of been an intentionally placed traitor, some believe that Dustin-Not-Dustin had his eye on overthrowing Captain Richard the Stormbringer from the beginning.
