The last of the orange-red rays evaporated with the close of the evening. Darren watched the celestial orb's final descent into the black from the wide viewing window in his ready room. The waters had chopped intermittently in the early afternoon, but the night would be a calm one. Probably one of the most uneventful evenings this crew had had in the better of three months. The crew in his fleet, as well as himself if he was being honest, preferred the life of adventure. The mission of meeting everyday as it came had provided them with no shortage of tall tales, true and embellished, to woo the locals at any port.
It was the life of real swashbuckling buccaneers. And he would be lying if he said he didn't love every second of it.
There were certain aspects about this life however, that he favored less than others...

Roughly a day and a half ago, his first mate Lylant had brought a foreigner onto the Dread. Thorne had followed all the standard protocol, which were mostly things Darren himself had installed, before bringing their new guest aboard, but... One thing the captain wasn't especially fond of was transporting complete strangers. It put him in a very unique position--one he was more than ready for though did not particularly enjoy. And that was the position of warden and caretaker.
If the visitor behaved, then he was the caretaker in charge of making sure the passenger was fed, clothed, and kept away from the men below deck if they were female. Run amok and he was the warden, a harsh taskmaster that would need to swiftly dispatch the threat -often brutally- and protect his own men. These things needed to be balanced or his place as captain could fall under scrutiny and the reputation of his fleet put at stake. What would it say of him if he let legitimate guests go hungry and be robbed while allowing more nefarious travelers to gut his ship from within?
He lit a single candle and brought a soft glow to the ready. Wax snowballed quietly down the length of the rod, adding to the multi-colored rivers that ran along the empty ale bottle the candle stood in. Darren placed the light at the far end of his desk, the flame licked to and fro as it moved through the air.

Darren could always tell what the current disposition of the ship was just by listening to it. When readying for battle there was the thunder of cannons being rolled into their firing positions. Feet stomping along wood and the clink of weapons being distributed by the quartermaster. Preparing for storm? The canvas of the sails hastily being rolled while pulleys whined amidst the rigging...
During a night of spilled ale, warm food, and fine women, he had once been told of the priests at Luerro. According to the fisherman, people would make great pilgrimages to see these holy men. Not for blessings, redemption, or absolution, but to be free from pain. To relax. It was said to be the most tranquil place in all of the lands. Darren imagined it to be a wonderfully peaceful experience, but doubted it could compare to his ship on silent and steady night such as this.
The captain let his eyes close as his ears assess the ship. No more bustle of feet. The deck equipment was secured and no longer rattled. The wind lightly teased the open sails. Not even the birds were singing. The ship had gone from mobile engine of war to a rocking cradle for the two hundred souls on board. It was, from his perspective, the most peaceful place in existence.
In a few hours he would go wake up Lylant so she could relieve him, but first he had to skim the reports from the Pale Horse. So far, he didn't like what he saw...
