Ray had screwed up.
She knew it. Hated it. Felt guilty about it. An all too familiar process with her. It was her temper, she had little control over it and it grated that she let it get the best of her yet again.
The whole thing started because she felt sorry for Verity. Maybe Verity wasn't called a princess, but that was what she was. A daughter of a ruling family with a lot responsibility, duty, and extremely high expectations. It was the life Ray had ran away from. Hoping to give Verity a taste of the freedom Ray had gained for herself she suggested Verity go with Lilwen to see the volcano they discovered, and Victor had smacked it down without a blink.
He'd sounded so much like her brother Corbin, so she'd responded the same way she had to her brother out of habit. And anger. And hurt. And petulance.
Dammit.
But she was just a guest in their home. Not even a guest, really. A stray. One heroically fished from the sea by Victor himself and given clothes, food, a bed, and kindness. The Kalibas had no obligation to accommodate her. Victor had made her position in his home very clear. It was something she would have done herself had she been in his shoes.
Dammit.
Her current situation was alien to her. Here she had no title, no standing, and no stable plan for her future. She had nothing that was hers except the choices she made. Those choices were far more important than ever before. Sure, she'd escaped the suffocation of the Islands. But what happened now? What would happen in the future? Just what was it she wanted her future to be?
Hard questions. Ones she didn't have answers for and wasn't sure she was even qualified to do so yet.
Laelia dangled a potential path in front of her. She'd train her to fight, teach her control of herself and her fire. Those were valuable skills, necessary skills, no matter what other choices she may make later on. But in order to have what Laelia offered, Ray had to make amends with Victor. That wasn't Laelia's demand, but something Ray felt necessary if she was going to stick around and take even more from the Kaliba family.

Ray didn't sleep that night, despite knowing she was expected to join Laelia on a run at first light. She could crash afterwards, she figured. It was more important she use the time she had now to get things done. It took her an hour to get to the beach. Another hour to comb the sand for lightning-strike glass. Four hours sitting still in the sand as she concentrated on using her fire to create what she wanted. Water lapped at her legs and nearby driftwood burned to ash, but otherwise it was as safe as Ray could make it. This was an old trick of hers. A secret artistic hobby that she'd never shared with anyone before. The Islands had lots of seashores, more rock than sand like they had here but enough for her to play with. It had been her only means of escape back home and she'd had a number of favored, hidden coves where she could set her magic free. Another hour to return but only fifteen minutes to dart through the Palace and place her gift in the hallway just outside Victor's door. Hopefully the big oaf wouldn't step on it. Just in case she snatched a heavy vase and tipped it upset down so it sat over her gift. She had just enough time left to scurry off and meet with Laelia for their run.

While Ray dashed from her place securing her gift, a ‘big oaf’ was jogging up the hallway towards her, or rather towards his room. Victor acted like a first born child. Constantly trying to perform. To please. He had ‘met’ his father only once, and still he woke up far before the sun to run, train in his armor, and run some more. Endurance training had to come first, because when you push yourself to exhaustion the whole day feels like endurance training.
Victor was not entirely human, and evident thing as Victor approached Ray with a curious stare as he finally came to a stop. He was covered in a sheen of sweat over a youthful body that had no right being as defined as it was, shirtless he drew the guilty attention of maids young and old. He was kind enough to pretend he didn’t notice.
Victor practiced, he trained, far more than his predecessors did- he had to. Laelia had made sure of it. Big Sis, had made sure that his gifts weren’t relied on, but merely an enhancement of what he had between his ears. What was between his ears at the moment was full of mild annoyance and the guilt that drove him to run as fast as he did today.
“You’re up early…” he looked around her at the vase in front of his door.

Ray stared at Victor for a number of reasons. He wasn't supposed to be awake, for one. He was here instead of in his room, and he'd caught her slinking away from his door like a bad thief. Then there was the sight of him shirtless and sweaty...
It was one of those moments that burned itself into the mind in agonizing detail. When time slowed down and every tiny thing was noticed, appreciated, and filed away for future perfect recall.
His hair was damp and in perfect disarray, a few locks stuck to his forehead. Sweat dripped from the ends and her eyes followed a single drop that meandered from his shoulder, followed the line of his collarbone, and tortured her with its slow trip down his muscular chest to sculpted stomach only to get lost in a tantalizing line of body hair in a trail to disappear beneath the waistline of his pants.
She wanted to lick it.
Wait. What?!!
Oh gods.
Her eyes snapped upwards, wide and near panicked, her mind scrambling to even remember her own name. He'd said words, hadn't he? He expected her to say something back.
Words. Words were hard.
By the Five, he was a beautiful creature.
Oh gods, shut up! Shut up, shut up, shut u---crap. I have to say something. Anything! C'mon...you can do it.
"I...er...uh...I was... I mean. Uhm. Yes?"
No! It wasn't a question you idiot!
"I mean. I'm supposed to meet with..." What was her name?! "Laelia. Right. I'm supposed to meet with Laelia. Ahem. I was... That's where I was going. Where I am going. You, uh... You're sweaty."
If she could call the words back she would have sold her soul in that moment to do so. Way to state the obvious, dipshit.
Ray stood there with her crimson hair a mess, sand stuck to the wet fabric around her ankles, and her face blazing in embarrassment. She wanted to run. Tried to run. Why were her feet glued to the floor?
This was not how she'd planned this morning to go. Not in the least.

Victor had been stared at, but never quite like that. It was times like this he was extra glad he couldn’t do what Verity could do. His head tilted to the left as he regarded her during those long moments- and perhaps inadvertently his lips turned up in a pleased little grin. It faded by the time her sense of time returned, the moment one he couldn’t forget. Not for a while.
“Meeting with Laelia? Good.” he said his brows perking up subtly with interest. “I was worried you might be leaving.” he admitted after a beat, a beat in which his shoulders weren’t so broad, his posture not so *Kaliba*.
“ I was cruel, saying what I said. I hope you know, you’re welcome here for as long as you need...Just..” he sighed.
“I’d really like you to understand why I want to protect her, and how important it is that she gets out of here soon. I understand both are true. She needs room to be free, but Verity has spent her time learning things that may not aid much outside these walls. Soon- in days, not weeks- we’ll leave here to take in the sights. I promise.” he said with a definitive nod.
“ So… I’m willing to forget it, if you are.” he said offering his hand out in the Islander fashion.

Ray let out a long sigh and accepted his offered hand with a firm and proper shake. While the suddenly nutty part of her brain screamed Oh gods I'm touching him! the more rational side reestablished a bit of balance. Hopefully he wouldn't notice her sweaty palms or her weird trembling.
Perhaps a bit quick to reclaim her hand, she wiped her sweaty palms against her pants. "I... I understand better than you think," she said, lips quirked in a wry grin. "You weren't wrong last night. It wasn't my place or right to say what I did. I was going to leave," she admitted. "But I found Laelia and... I want to stay. At least long enough for her to train me. I'll... I'll do better."
Ray bit her lower lip, then jogged back to his doorway, crouching down with her back turned to him. It blocked his view of what she was doing for a moment. After putting the vase back where it went, she returned to him, her face just as red as it was before. Feeling awkward and stupid and silly and a lot of other things that caused the butterflies in her stomach to riot and made every inch of her skin tingle, Ray held out the small pendant, the glass disc dangling from a simple bit of string.
"I... I made you this," she muttered, staring intently at the wall to the right and not at the half-naked gorgeous boy-man in front of her. "To say sorry."

He took the pendant in his hand and lifted it up from its string, letting it spin to and fro infront of the lamplight in the hall. His expression was softer than perhaps one would expect. “ I can see why Verity likes you.” He remarked as he put the pendant on to show his appreciation for the token.
“ I like you too.” He said to her giving her a long stare in which he did not so quickly break gaze. He stepped to her side to get around her to his room. He had gear to pick up and Solarion to take for a ride. He was up so early for physical training in order to indulge in the training of other skills. It was the hidden life of the Kaliba family. Practice. Study. Discipline. Even to those blessed with ‘special instruction’ the members of the Family worked constantly to maintain and excel in their personal power.
It was not surprising that some islanders actually liked them.
Glancing over his shoulder he gave both thanks and warning. “You better not be late. She’ll have you climb before the run. I get the cruel tongue from my big sister."

"I like you both, too."
Ray flashed him a bright smile and an energetic wave before rushing off to meet up with Laelia. Freed from the weight of worry and guilt the bounce returned to her steps and the weariness from a night of no sleep disappeared entirely.
A temporary reprieve, she knew. But while the morning had not gone as intended, she had no regrets and a memory she'd secretly treasure forever.
