In the West, New Arisalon had began the process of annexing villages and territories leading to the fishing villages and barbarian tribes that dotted the Northwest. A project that more than a few investors clamored to, it was the brainchild of Trent Kaliba- inspired by the observations of years worth of scouting reports and the final logs of his Father. Risky to execute at the same time of the Southern Campaign, the Western front was one of diplomacy as much as the projection of power and stability. The legions were held back, and instead, special detachments of troops went with engineers, a few mages, and diplomats to secure fealty from the more civilized and amenable villages. The center of the Western Front was a wooded territory, surrounding a town built upon a group of rolling hills. Movers of earth, and quarried limestone for foundation- and the city of Pax Sylvania was set. With roads through the wooded regions to facilitate the trade to other territories and back to New Arisalon, the settlement boasted a modest regiment, a militia, and a company of scouts.
With wooden walls, many conveniences, and trade from the outlying villages, Pax Sylvania, the Peaceful Forest- was the center of the effort to bring a new order to the wilderness. It didn’t take too long before the wilderness began to impose its own order.

Tarek was a mercenary town through and through. Saved by the Company of Aquilane, it housed those mercenaries lead by Commander Thane. A traditional Arisalonian military camp rested more or less in its center, and the security of the town was higher than it had ever been. The tribe of the Sea Snakes- a group of reavers had been decimated by the coordinated precision of the Company of Aquilane, and Tarek had become a peaceful place despite its remote location from the security of New Arisalon and even the new town of Pax Sylvania.
Calidus Thane returned triumphant from another mercenary job in which the Company of Aquilane continued to stuff their coffers both individually and as an enterprise. Missions within the interior were always simple enough to the mercenaries who had the benefit of Arisalonian tactics, of Arisalonian strategems. Calidus while not ‘highborn’ was a decorated soldier of the old empire, ripped out of it by the designs of a General who as rumor would have it- was quite dead.
His mercenaries, castoffs from the multiverse, from mundane and arcane civilizations both, were hardened but growing lazy in a world that seemed to cater to them. There was no shortage of opportunities to use force in Tyran- at least these days.
So, as it grew colder, and Autumn’s chill seemed to grip them into complacency, the camp simply went on business as usual- content to spend some time guarding harvests, and doing simple jobs- until a fell wind blew such illusions of safety away.

The winter storm came to New Arisalon sooner, oddly enough than it swept through Tarek—it clouded visibility, and delayed the scouts return by three hours. When the scout did return, he did so with dire tidings, and without the other patrols.
The scout was injured, struck with a filth ridden barbed arrow in the shoulder. No huge struggle for sophisticated healers, but it would take time. Resources. The threat of such primitive warfare was not lost on Calidus as he spoke to the man.
“Five hundred- at least. Men, but twisted. Blue skinned, purple skinned. Warped somehow. Demonic magic. They are vanguard, preceding a large force. All the Barbarians- all of them. “ It was spat out, but not half as frantically as expected.
“How far?” Calidus asked, gesturing for aides and runners. They’d need to evacuate. A horde? They couldn’t hope to defend the town against the full strength of a horde- the tribes could’ve mustered no more than five hundred only weeks ago- even unified. These numbers…
“Vanguard within 12 hours. The mass? One day. They marched through the storm.”

“How are we with magical communication? Can we send a missive to Pax Sylvania? To New Arisalon?” Calidus asked the camp mage, Cyrith.
“No, sir. I’ve already tried. There is some sort of interference… spans miles. No telling how far. I’ll test the limits. “ Cyrith looked scared, full of trepidation. This kind of interference? It was demonic in origin- the kind of curse that could lay upon the very land.
Calidus didn’t need to be told anything more. “Ships will be dangerous- the reavers are no doubt forming a blockade. I need volunteers. Send boats out- laden with oil, powder. Any explosive. Lay traps, then return to the shore if possible by lifeboat. “ The mission was more or less suicide for a brave few.
Boats left within the hour.
Within three, the evacuation was underway, carts leaving town- soldiers escorting them (the youngest, the greenest.)
Calidus and a brave three hundred men stood to fight the vanguard- and hopefully retreat just ahead of the main host.

" So, you see- Lord Magister... All of our sending stones, any messages sent magically into the field, they are inoperable. Blocked perhaps, but more like-"
Rathas Mourne was cut off by the smooth baritone of Trent Kaliba, who stood in front of the War Table, a stout, massive stone table in which the land was represented in perfect relief, in matters of topography and various other features. Points of interests were hued lights that persisted despite varying size.
"More like the spells fail entirely. As if the area or the person doesn't exist, despite evidence to the contrary? Yes, it's a powerful demonic ritual. Abyssal magic if there ever was one. Unholy sites hold the magic that sustains the ritual, they'll be difficult to find- harder to neutralize. We'll have to move to pigeons and runners. What's the impact? "
" As far as Tarek...just there at current."
" Provide the same report to the military. We'll need to put Pax Sylvania on alert..."
