So every few weeks or so I have people coming to me about ranks. I’d like to stress this one last time and hopefully everyone will understand! We have a couple complaints here and there about certain things, but I promise you all if there was an easier way to do things, I would give it to you.
If I had to be honest, I HATE rank. I think a lot of people use it for some power position against those who don’t focus on rank. But I know a handful of you appreciate the dice battles so we kept it around. It’s also a part of Tyran history so... *shrugs*
Here’s some things to note:
1. Ranks take work
Ranks are a bit of a complicated thing. We have players from 2005 with high xp and dmg, but we don’t want new players to feel intimidated by that. It’s why we made the simple system we did that focuses only a little bit on years played and more about posts. This way, it’s not impossible for new players to eventually catch up to older ones. That being said, these old players put effort into their characters and worked hard to get them to where they are. So should new players/characters. You can’t expect something overnight!
With the thing about posting logs for ranks under one character, we urge you guys to see the issue with this. It’s basically cheating. You can’t come up with a new character and claim the rank of an older one because you posted as them on another character. It’s unfair. And proboards makes it easy where you have have all your characters under one email. You just rotate through the character and post the logs... not even needing to sign out!
If you’ve been doing this, please contact me and I’ll try to work something out. But form this point forward, if you’re posting logs for RANK, then you need to post under that character account.
2. The forum issue
One common thing I hear from players is that rank favours forum players. This is a sad truth that none of us can change. However, it’s always been this way. There is no way for us to combine discord with proboards and even if we could, people have one account for all their nicks on discord. We couldn’t keep track of what character it goes to. However, a solution the staff brought in was that we had you guys post your logs or a summary of your play for your characters. Is it a little repetitive? Yes. But this is the easiest way that chat players can gain their rank! Heck, it’s even better for you because you can post a crap ton of different posts with small amount of logs.
Also, the forum can act as real time RP too! If you’re both online, simply take turns posting and tag each other. It’s a little slower than chat, but it’s a simply way of boosting up your rank fast.
3. Rank vs Achievements
The admin brought in the achievement system in hopes of taking away the idealism of rank. We’re one of few text based rpgs that still use dice (unless it’s a heavy table top focused game) and over all it’s a style that’s going out of fashion. We wanted something that would give the old players a reminder of their hard work and give the new players something to strive for. In a sense, we wanted it to take over rank since people hardly used it.
So if you’re looking for something else to have your characters focus on, these are a good thing to strive for. It puts less pressure on you to post constantly too.
4. Limit your rank characters
I’ve noticed that a lot of people were striving to add rank to ALL their characters and were beginning to burn themselves out. Remember, as an RPG we are story driven! Pick one or two characters that you have and focus your rank on them. Temple guardians or military characters might want to have high ranks. However, a shop owner who lives in the capital and is living a simple life wouldn’t need to worry about fighting. It makes it a lot easier for you to strive for your goal. If you have characters that you don’t see ever taking part in a battle, there is literally no point to having rank.
If you’re concerned about events and not being able to take part because they want ranks, talk to the Event Runner. They should help you and possibly give you a temporary rank so you can take part in the event without stressing.
So that’s everything I can think of. I’m sorry if some of you were confused by things or think something is unfair. Like I said, contact me and I’ll work with you, but the way we have things set up is the easiest way possible for everyone to gain rank fairly.
