The Capitol had never been his favorite place. Not since his arrival. It had a bad smell, mostly because of all the shite. They all seemed to pretend it didn't stink, even as it filled some of the streets. See, running water was not so new an invention, and the wells and sewers were hardly sufficient to pipe out all the waste of a well populated city.
The Queen Regent, who he counted an acquaintance that he never really got to know- had seen to some of that. Engineers, mages, everything it took to make the city less of a plague ridden boil. In truth, it wasn't the city's fault. It was just time, and the fact that so many Tyran's inevitable destruction and rebirth, meant the cities kept being built on the ruins of the last.
The late night arrival might've been scandalous, if anyone cared. Calidus Thane dismounted and shook off his hood, before taking steps in, greeted and stopped, before being allowed to further walk, only doing as he was bid. His acquaintance had a job or perhaps she needed someone who could remember the smell of shit in the capital city.

She'd received word that the fighting on the western front had ceased. Her brother Victor had returned home safely and she'd sent word in no uncertain terms that she expected her baby brother to come and visit her in the Capital as soon as he was able. She missed him more than she thought possible. Playing a part in raising and training the boy, now a man, had created a bond that she hadn't yet managed to break. And she had so few of those left.
But knowing that Victor had returned meant that someone else was now also free. Calidus Thane, and his band of Arisalonian mercenaries whom she'd barely begun to get to know before they'd gone off to fight on the western front. Timing and all of that, Laelia had just enacted her coup on the former Queen Protea when that broke out. She hadn't seen her baby brother or Thane since then.
Employing mercenaries was somewhat of a necessity, despite some rulers who looked upon the practice with distaste. Mercenaries were unpredictable, their only loyalty to coin. But that loyalty, above all, was one you could almost always count on. The Kaliban had begun as a mercenary company, working for coin while Arc Kaliba established his influence over Tyran. Laelia felt no such misgivings about paying mercenaries to perform tasks she wasn't particularly enamored of committing her own forces too. And Thane was becoming known for getting results.
Respectfully, Calidus was led inside the palace, a well constructed fortress with an emphasis on defense and built to withstand a siege. It was functional, though it would seem someone had convinced the Queen to allow decor in the theme of a military aesthetic. The stone walls were covered by tapestries that depicted battles of Tyran's past, and replicas of armour and weapons once wielded by Tyran's most famous individuals were on display.
The destination was an office where the Queen Regent sat upon on a couch in front of the hearth with her boots perched on a table in front of her and another couch and several chairs were also arranged in a semi circle, a less formal location to discuss whatever needed to be discussed. Behind was a desk, organized, optimized to be efficient.
Calidus's escort cleared his throat, drawing Laelia's attention. She glanced over to the door and the corner of her mouth lifted in a faint smile of recognition.
"Calidus Thane, Your Majesty." He bowed.
"I see that." Her tone relatively goodnatured. "Thank you, Emmerson. You're dismissed."
Emmerson bowed again, and left.

Calidus Thane had the unlucky distinction of being in the same town that was crushed by the tide of demons and barbarians. He had fought hard to ensure the civilians escaped, along with Victor Kaliba who Calidus had a begruding respect for. He was young, zealous, but Calidus would never say the boy - ergh, man- was weak. He could hardly understand the boy's devotion, nor his moral compass- but Calidus knew an Arisalonian when he witnessed one.
Now, he found himself in front of another- a woman who could've made that war a little shorter. Who knew so many barbarians were willing to throw in with a demon?
He bowed, a stiff thing- one of military precision, and one that was more or less foreign. "Queen Kaliba, you requested me. Imagine my surprise."

Laelia appraised him with an attention to detail. She knew well the look of a man freshly returned from a war. She empathized. If things had happened differently, she would have been involved as well. But as it was, a nation in political turmoil was vulnerable, and at the time the Capital had very little in the way of military forces to speak of. It wasn't a battle Laelia could have afforded to join at the time.
"It's good to see you, Thane. Please. Come in." She gestured to the array of chairs near her, indicating he sit where he liked. "Can I offer you anything? Wine? Ale? Something stronger?" He looked to her like a man that might enjoy a fine scotch.
"I suppose it would be a surprise. Return from war and have me asking for you. I hope you didn't rush." She remarked dryly with a smirk.

"Missions are well and good on the western front. Your brother, Trent has us mopping up some holdouts of resistance, insuring it is truly safe for citizens. My last meeting with him gave me the impression he has grown rather bored already, having just returned home." He said with a nod at her offering. He'd take what was handy.
The Captain seated himself across from her, the chair not askew to either place, but right in front. "Monarchy...it looks tiring. Doesn't entirely suit you." he said candidly with a small chuckle. It was an old proverb that the crown suited no one. He was no judge of her character or capacity, but he knew it had not originally been what she had wanted.
It was a shame. He had designs on seeing her smile more. Queen universally did far less of that. "I imagine this evening is professional. What do you need done?"

"I think Trent finds this entire plane boring. If it weren't for his Witch, I doubt he would come back at all." She commented with a shrug, standing to her feet. The sideboard held a number of offerings, and Laelia went for her initial assumption given that he didn't express a preference. A finger of scotch for each of them, which she passed to him on her way back to her own seat.
"I never thought it would suit me. I resisted for as long as I could. But the alternative eventually became more tiring. The revolving door became unacceptable." It was the only explanation she provided without further prompting.
"Right to the point. I like that. It's how I prefer to do things, really, but it seems to be off-putting to most people." Laelia looked like she might continue along that vein, but caught herself with a shake of her head. She didn't need to lay on the pleasantries in this instance to gain his cooperation.
"I want to offer you and your company some work. That is, if your work for my brother isn't keeping you too busy. I've built Capital Forces to a level where I no longer feel vulnerable. But I'm still not at the point where I can expend the resources that I would like to. But coin is something I do have. And I will pay well."
"The job I have at the moment requires a bit of stealth and infiltration. There's a minor lord to the south of the Capital just inside Capital lands who continues to thumb his nose at my rule. Refuses to pay his taxes, hasn't submitted his share of men to the military. Diplomacy and incentive have failed, and I am not playing his game any longer. I need you to infiltrate his keep and disable it's defenses so that I can take it."

The Estate of Lord Belrose was loudly celebrating the birthday of his eldest son, a party brought on with tribute from nearby bannermen in the form of many barrels of spirits and amazing provisions. It was a dastardly trick that among the tribute were members of the Iron Hand, and perhaps worse was that among the revelers was Calidus Thane, more or less unknown amidst the crowd in the late evening.
Powderkegs set at the gates exploded once most were deep in their cups, and the sound set the signal that it was time to attack. A drunk and weakened guard force, and soldiers scattered outside a gate now broken meant chaos. The kind of chaos that spelled quick doom for nearly a dozen who roused themselves to defend their lord's escape to his hall, a room they could defend and hold.
Calidus did not wait for the Queen and her soldiers to finish the job, and pursued with his accomplices, cutting a bloody path through the keep that split the marginal defense of the outer bailey and courtyards.
By the time the Queen's forces punched through the rest of the keep, the Hall was wide open, and held the rich smell of copper as no one was left alive, save the Lord himself.
The amount of bloodshed the 'infiltrators' had accomplished marked Calidus as quite the overachiever.

She was in her glory. Even a simple mission such as this was more than she'd had the opportunity for in the months following her ascension to the throne. Calidus' plan of infiltration was solid, much like she herself would have engineered if she had undertaken the task herself. It was in these moments that she was truly able to appreciate Arisalonian strategy and tactics. The fact that Calidus was an unknown to Belrose made his success even more likely.
When the gates exploded, the Queen gave the order to advance and with an efficiency that was reminiscent of her days commanding the Kaliban, her forces set about surrounding and overwhelming what paltry defenses were left. If Belrose had only bent the knee, his estate would never have been taken so quickly.
"Accept surrenders. Kill the rest." Laelia Kaliba said with a wave of her hand. There was no need to unnecessarily kill soldiers who were only being loyal to their Lord. Even if such loyalty was misplaced. It was likely the majority of them had never been told of Belrose's refusal of his Queen's demands.
Not all of them surrendered, of course, and before long Laelia's armour and sword was stained with blood. Once the bailey and courtyard were secured, she continued on into the keep itself with a small escort. Armed stragglers fell on Starscale's blade while terrified servants were bid to exit with their hands raised in the air and no harm would befall them.
Finally she entered the hall where Thane and his company awaited with none other than Lord Belrose who was equally furious and terrified. Laelia caught Thane's eye and the corner of her mouth lifted. Her cheeks were flushed, icy eyes alight with something akin to joy. "Well done." She complimented with a nod of her head.

" I wouldn't say it was that well done, My Queen." he said the term relatively foreign to his tongue. The Ironhands had not known rulers for long, and Calidus had some issue with recognizing the ruler of Tyran as his ruler, even if it was someone he found to be an equal- or even more.
All the same, he nodded deep towards Laelia, his sword still steadied at Lord Belrose. With a swift movement to the side and a slam of his heel to the back of the man's knee, he was made to kneel in front of his queen.
A shame it was too late.
"Lord Belrose had worse sin than merely ignoring and defying your decree. Lord Belrose, considered an unfit force a shield he gave little consideration to. Too many have bled for his judgement."
Lord Belrose's son lay face down in the midst of the hall- having caught a sword slash to his throat. His head dangled on a lack of muscle and sinew.
Calidus held himself with poise after delivering Belrose to the queen, somewhat irritated that so many young people had to die. This son for example. It was foolish beyond reason, but not odd. Everyone wanted to feel important... some people just had foolish designs on how to achieve it.

Whether Thane officially recognized her as his ruler or not, Laelia silently appreciated the respect he offered her by referring to her title. It wasn't necessary in her eyes, but as always, eyes were watching and the more who acknowledged her, the less likely it was that people would find themselves in Belrose's position.
Laelia paused, slowly observing the carnage in the hall and making note of the details. Her gaze eventually came to rest upon the man forced to his knees. "A pity, really." Her voice was cool as she closed the distance between them. She hunkered down into a crouch before Belrose. "I was going to offer your son a chance to bend the knee after I killed you. Your line could have continued. But you chose to defy me after I gave you many chances, and you pit your paltry defenses against a force you couldn't hope to win against. Foolish. Now I will find someone with more sense than you to manage this Estate."
With that she stood and withdrew the sword from the sheathe at her left hip. Starscale blazed brightly as though reflecting the Queen's irritation at even having to do this for such foolishness. "Lord Belrose, there are a number of charges that I could lay at your feet. Refusal to contribute to the Capital's infrastructure and defense, murdering my messenger, your blatant disregard for the wellbeing of your own men and your family...But your highest offense to me?"
"You're an idiot." Starscale descended, slicing clean through Belrose's neck. The heat from the blade instantly cauterized, filling the room with the stench of burnt flesh.

" Like son, like Father." came his remark, his sentiment to these weak would be rebels little more than disgust. Calidus moved to the side of the man to look to the corpse in a moment of satisfaction before giving Laelia a longer stare.
" Few things iritated your father, so I've come to know- like idiocy. Regardless their position...Idiocy was always the worst." He shifted to once side and gestured for his small company to clear the room. Four. Four of them including Calidus had killed the interior guard to a man. Arc had not overstated the forces of the Empire.. that was for certain.
" Passing sentences... it suits you. "

Laelia wiped the dry flecks of blood from her onto Belrose's tunic and sheathed Starscale in its scabbard once more. "I know that well." She glanced over her shoulder at Calidus. " Of my father's five children, I am the only one he truly raised from childhood. I most assuredly take after him in that regard and many others."
"I wish that he hadn't made it necessary." She shrugged, seeming unperturbed by despite her words. A thought struck her and clearly she found it amusing as her barely-there smirk widened somewhat. "I don't suppose you want an Estate..." Laelia was only half-joking.

To position troops close to the capital, it would essentially make Calidus less of a mercenary and more of a true soldier again. He wondered if that was something those who swore fealty to him would want....
" I could be interested, if those who serve me are." he said only half joking. He put his hand upon the Queen's shoulder. "Let us instead, think of our victory this evening. The spoils and consequences better saved for the morning."

Laelia's head fell back as she laughed, a rare sound coming from the General Queen. "Of course. Those things can be discussed later. For now, Belrose Estate will be occupied by my forces until its fate is determined."
Her gaze fell to the hand on her shoulder. It didn't cause her offense as such a familiar gesture normally might. Since the moment they had met, Laelia had felt a draw to the mercenary that she couldn't quite explain. Perhaps it was their shared heritage. It clawed at her, pulling her in with the promise of questions answered and burning curiosities sated. Something about him, even if all it was, was the Arisalonian blood in their veins, was familiar. Comfortable.
"Shall we celebrate here? Or back in the Capital?"

" Teleportation makes my stomach upset, and it's too long a ride to take tonight with the retinue you currently must employ. I intend to take advantae of the feast already cooked and the spirits already delivered. " He said giving her a small wink, and he began to walk out of the hall., towards the Feast Hall. His black leathers were blood stained, along with his crimson cloak. He did not wear the armor he'd usually employ for such a storming attack, but instead Calidus looked almost the measure of a duelist.
He looked over his shoulder. " If you assigned the guards right, Queen Kaliba- you might even feel like you aren't living in the least comfortable palace in Tyran- every move watched by a sycophant. "
"Just a suggestion."

Laelia snorted with amusement as he mentioned teleportation made his stomach upset. "Do it enough and you get used to it." She chuckled with a shake of her head, but she didn't press into giving him a hard time about it. Something she'd retain in her back pocket to tease him about at opportune moments, perhaps.
Catching his wink, her lips pursed briefly and she inhaled, tapping her fingers against her thigh in contemplation. "An acceptable plan." She agreed and soon fell into step beside him. "They know I don't like them hovering. For the most part, they're a formality. And a means to ensure I am not overwhelmed by foes. Overconfidence can be a killer, I suppose. I would hate to die because I was an idiot." A rueful chuckle accompanied the jest. Her sense of humour was morbid, but when one killed for a living, that tended to be normal.
"You're welcome to call me Laelia, you know. I may insist if you push the issue." And then she frowned, almost with indignation. "I had the palace designed with my comfort in mind. I suppose to others it seems rather utilitarian."

" No one has held that castle long, regardless the comfort." he said glancing over his shoulder as she followed before he turned to stride backwards and keep his eyes on her. They were a mess. Luckily the blood that marred them all belonged to other people.
" As for what I call you..." he looked around, " I only call you queen for their benefit. They shouldn't forget who you are...as I've been told, a short memory leads to a short life." he said with a shrug, before opening the side door into the fest hall.
" You can call me Cal... when no one is around. Hardened mercenary captain, victor of a thousand battles- doesn't sound the same., with "Cal" makes me sound like a stablehand."

"This much is true. It's perhaps ironic that after I destroyed it years ago, I'm the one to rebuild it. I'm planning to hold it for much longer than my predecessors. Hence why I had the design improved. It's built to withstand a siege. And more."
"I understand why you refer to me by that title. And I do appreciate the reinforcement." She stepped inside the hall beside him. "Cal. I like it." It was less severe than Calidus, much like Arc was less so than Arcanus, or Trent was than Trenton. Laelia wasn't certain she was willing to offer permission to call her 'Lae' yet, however. She'd see how things went.
"You're right. It would be a shame to abandon a feast such as this." She settled herself in a chair without ceremony, adjusting Starscale to the side.

" Laelia, tell me- you've got these ambitions for a monarchy, all these duties and obligations... " He paused for a moment.
" I knew your father well, before the Empire fell to eons. I knew Reign before he had the Darklight...and while I don't boast there cognizant ages, I have to say- I'm experienced enough to say.... neither one of them would've wanted this for you. Out here is where you still belong....The woman I invited to my camp was a great deal more interesting than the Queen I've more recently met."
He gave her a smile that was almost rakish, before adding a joke, " The Queen pays well, however."

With a long exhale, Laelia reached for a bottle of mead, murmuring a brief incantation over the bottle and awaiting some unseen result before proceeding to pour some into a mug. No one had attempted to leave poison behind. After taking a measured pull from the mug she regarded Calidus. "I never knew Reign before the Darklight. And understandably once I did meet him, it put us at...odds. For quite some time. We still aren't particularly close. As for my father..." She glanced away briefly. "He isn't here anymore. There are many things that he didn't want for me that...I went through with regardless. We are alike in many ways, yes, but...I don't live his life."
"I became so weary of watching the same mistakes happen time and time again. Watching would-be rulers sweep in because of a sense of entitlement or conquest or some other reason." Her eyes raised and she met Thane's. "I do miss this life sometimes. And perhaps one day once things are stable and my son Zephyr is ready, I will abdicate in his favour. I served at the side of five Kings and Queens of Tyran. I did my best to coach each one of them, to provide support and encourage them to rule in Tyran's best interest. And each one of them failed because they made ridiculous mistakes. Not one of them cared enough for Tyran to put Tyran first."
"Perhaps that makes me less interesting. But I've never really given much of a damn if people found me interesting or not."

" You also aren't good at jokes." he said pointing a finger in her direction. " Identifying them, telling them. All of that." He said with a shrug.
" They die because Tyran doesn't need them. Not when everyone carves out their own kingdoms. However... Tyran might need you. That I could buy." He said with a shrug of his shoulders, having not wanted to provoke such an emotional and historical reaction. He enjoyed his mead, and left her solemnity either melt under his humor, or for her to build yet another redoubt to hide behind.

It was a gamble he took, but it seemed to pay off. "But brooding is something I excel at!" She leaned her elbow on the table, snickering at her own expense with some chagrin. Peering at him between her fingers, Laelia smiled then, unable to help herself. A rare, real full smile. "I get that from my father too."
"I apologize. Tonight is for celebrating. Not for whatever it is that I was just doing." Laelia adjusted her chair so she was sitting closer to him. Leaning forward, she reached out to scoop some sort of sweet custard onto her finger and brought it back to her mouth. Normally her table manners were much better. But she was with a mercenary and they were enjoying the spoils of their labour. She was making an effort to let loose.
"Mm." She said, somewhat surprised. "That's actually good." Another scoop from the dish and she offered her finger to him. "Try?" Half-wondering if he would actually accept.

Calidus looked at her for a moment incredulous. Wasn't she something. He leaned forward and took it straight from her fingertip. It was surprisingly good. "Wow...yeah, Lord Belrose spared no expense. Which I suppose, isn't a bad thing considering it was his final meal." He gave Laelia a long look as he rose from the moment of intimacy she'd just tossed out.
" He was a different man, before Tyran. Less brooding- more...alive." He said as he shrugged his shoulders. "Once upon a time, he knew how to have fun. I think he'd be proud of you. I think you're doing the right thing. But I also think..." he reached out and put his hand over her own as she withdrew it.
" Nights like this, are far better memories than the duty you must see too. Your brother... he made me promise, I'd tell you that. Awkward as it is. The young lion of House Kaliba, he worries about his sister- even when we are neck deep in demon possessed barbarians and hellspawn."
Calidus had a way of taking few things seriously, while still being an accomplished commander. It was either relief, or mystery that he retained such a light heart. " Now, that I've done my duty- pass me some more of that, and try the lamb!" he pushed the platter in her direction.

As he caught her hand, she met his gaze unflinchingly. He'd be proud of you. She swallowed hard, allowing the emotion evoked at those words to well to the surface ever so briefly before she forced them back down. Celebrate.
She rolled her eyes. "My little brother. I'm supposed to worry about him, not the other way around." But she knew it didn't work that way. "I'm glad you got to know him. He's important to me."
Hastily she passed the custard and snatched the platter of lamb, taking a forkful and sighing blissfully. "A good recommendation." Once she finished the bite, Laelia observed him for a long moment, head canted as her brow furrowed with consideration.

" He's a good warrior. A good soldier, but what saved us out there, was his leadership. I can tell he learned much of it from you." He said before putting a pin in that topic. " But we always talk about you.... I give you full permission to talk about me." he teased, a little curious to why she was looking at him just as she was.

"I don't mean to always talk about me. I suppose I'm trying to be respectful of your boundaries. But since I have permission..." The corner of her mouth raised in a smirk.
"How do you balance life versus duty? You have responsibilities. What do you do to prevent them from becoming everything?"

" I exercise my duty, with friends. Yes, I command a force... a significant one, and while we have exceptional espirit de corps, we are not all so close. So I try to find those I am. And I involve them. It is the reason I took your request."
" You didn't need a spy. A sapper. Or even mercs. You could use a friend, Laelia Kaliba. I've been attempting to be that since we first met, if you haven't noticed."

Laelia would be generous to say that she could count the number of friends she had on one hand. She'd ben hard pressed to tick off three fingers. She'd never been very good at having friends. Her duty often took her in opposite directions and put her at odds with the people she had become close to. It was easier to keep people at arm's length. And yet, what a dreary existence it was.
"I..." She paused. Laelia wasn't good at this. "I do need a friend. Despite myself." She admitted. And then sighed, chuckling. "You're talking about me again. I asked about you." Falling silent for a long moment, she considered the question on her mind. It could be a bad idea. And yet, in the interest of celebrating, making memories, and all of that...
Laelia extended her hand and settled it against his shoulder. Slow and tentative her fingers caressed up the muscular cord of his throat to linger on his cheek. "What kind of a friend do you want to be?"

His eyes followed her motion, and as he felt her touch, a touch that held intent- Calidus gaze met her eyes. She was rather...fetching. He knew that of course- but he wasn't so sure he knew that in many moments of their acquaintence. Laelia Kaliba was beautiful, but she felt no need to represent that- so she didn't.
To know her, as he was coming to know her, was to see past her walls- walls she had built along with her skills- and walls that were just as ingrained.
" The kind that sticks around, Laelia." He should've seat himself on the same side of the table. He rose slightly, and moved across, a knee planted on the bench for balance- and Calidus did what few men had the courage to. He kissed the Queen, to shut her up.
