Ardyn set off in the late afternoon biding farewell to the twins after a more private farewell to Elyn. His steed bore him east by a rarely used game trail that'd wind through the forest and soon put him on old roads. Without the convenient travel aid of a powerful wizard in Elyn, he found himself steeled against the challenges of the road. Having not traveled alone for any real distance since meeting Elyn, the night embraced him on the road, a comfort that he'd not be making too many more rides like this.
Soon enough, Ardyn was not merely alone with his horse- he was alone with his thoughts. Thoughts that did not intend to plague him at first, but brought questions to him he had not been prepared for. This dark night of the soul lasted until the first morning of his trek, in which he had traveled nearly forty miles from where he had begun- where he'd take a few hours rest at the crossroads of a small village by the name of Marbury.

At 19 years of age, Ardyn was not as green as he once was, and as such, he'd found that traveling in the summer required wariness he was not so often willing to employ. Perhaps that is why he traveled through the evening on occassion, quick to use his Aether-infused metabolism to simply skip hours of sleep.
Ardyn thanks to Reign and the Lord Magister Trent, had finally recognized just what he was. Why his blood had that odd luster, why his skin seemed to heal from blemish- why he had never had a broken bone. Ardyn was something the Arisalonian's had planted in the past for the use of their great generals as even the magic which sustained them failed. He was 'supposed' to be a host. Remain in his chamber, mindless and inert until Arcanus Kaliba or even Genesis Letlove found him to replace their own weakening body.
It was a charming thought to be somebody's skinsuit. He thought he had memories of being possessed by Arc Kaliba himself, but recently he couldn't recall such a thing happening at all. (Editors note: Apparently Genesis Letlove let Trent mess with his time machine.) Perhaps that was why he didn't blink at the request that had him heading east in all haste.
Dreamless sleep through the morning hours and by an hour past noon, the rider had mounted his steed and in a brisk canter began riding the winding road past Marbury, not stopping until he had found the crossroads in which the road chosen took him to the southeast and the mountains that awaited in the distance- mountains that to his inhuman eyes appeared to smoke throughout the night until he settled in a small campsite.

It took a total of four days to make it the villages in the shadow of the eastern mountain range. Cracks in the earth at odd locations smelled of brimstone and sulfur, and while the rumor was that Zarentorax was still asleep or even dead, he could decline the later parts. A dragon, not the anthro-dragons of Xenothrin- they affected the landscape for miles away from their lair.
He'd just need to investigate. Check on the local legends, check on the general outlook of the humans in the areas, and with luck he'd find something that got him on the trail. By this time, Elyn was considering visiting the capital. He wouldn't have long to get it all done before the ball.... which also meant he couldn't spend a moment longer than necessary to heal from any injuries.
That meant he couldn't let the dragon roast him too much. That would require alchemical solutions. He'd get a good nights sleep and prioritize his tasks, doing so in the village of Carline, a large village dominated by an iron mine.

Carline was as helpful as a town of miners usually is. They had half a dozen problems in the mine, none of them springing from a dragon. He consulted with their herbalist to get instructions to where he could gather ingredients and ended up over paying for the ingredients from the herbalist.
The would be alchemist even asked him to show her the formula he was using. The potion was to aid the lungs, another oil was to resist the flames. Truth be told, plenty of would be dragonslayers thought the hellfire a great wyrm could produce was all they needed to ruin. The problem was smoke inhalation. More than a few of the old knights had died after the dragon was slain- if they were fortunate.
It was two days of work and investigation that had him almost certain the dragon's lair was on the central ascent, where a flow of magma was discovered only a few weeks back.
He had a hunch such an issue wasn't geothermic, but a sign of the dragon's awakening.
