"You were the ink in my eyes, black with blasphemy from the night before...the sweet sacrifice that you offered, was bitter dark chocolate, savoured it down to my core where I smolder...No wonder I am frozen today. The carousel runs on and I play a long, strum the morning away..."
Zephyr could hear the sound of the chittern and a low female voice coming from behind the door. The guard standing outside the door with him didn't know, but Zephyr did. His mother didn't usually play unless she was upset about something.
"Go on and tango the gorgon to bed, my dear, but best be prepared to get all that you bargained for, and when the curtain comes down these decisions must be made...On the day that the carnival heads out of town, leaving no trace, just a music box melody coming down...would you caravan at my side? My love, will you ride? See how we smolder...no wonder I am frozen today. The carousel runs on and I sing along...hum the morning away..."
Zephyr sighed, placing his hand against the door. She wasn't still angry with him for giving his escort the slip the other night, was she? No, it couldn't be that. Laelia Kaliba didn't hold onto anger once a situation was suitably resolved. No, the tune of this song was bittersweet and mournful.
"And I know they will all say 'Don't trust the sideshow serpentina, shadows grow long when the curtain comes down', but no longer than those you may find looking into these eyes..."

"You were the truth of my running mascara, the moment my mask was no more. I offered me up, sweet and bitter, suspecting you'd courage to savour me down to my core where I smolder...no wonder I am frozen to day. The midway is breaking down, do I let this miracle stay or do I cast it away? No wonder I am freezing, bleeding today...with the carnival I will leave town, like a melody running down, but darling for now...let the carousel play...running away...we are running away..."
He didn't know what to do. He couldn't remember a time that she'd been like this. Now and then she'd get into a bit of melancholy over the absence of his grandfather, but she was usually so good at showing it. Should he go in? Or should he leave her alone?
"And I know they will all say 'don't trust a sideshow serpentina, shadows grow fierce when the curtain comes down', but no fiercer than those you may find looking into these eyes...look into my eyes...."

They had gotten back too late, but after a visit to the church of evil, the butterfly knight found word that a certain Vargo was not dead. The first time they heard it, they went through a spell of disbelief. Then, after a long hour of processing it, Ehren’s heart just sank.
“My queen....” Ehren kept close, but attempted to offer the queen some space. Dressed in their usual armour, Ehren walked the halls to find the prince standing outside of his mothers door. “My prince...” she treated him with as much respect as Laelia, but deep down, that was becaause his face looked so much like hers. It was enough to make the butterfly knight blush, but they kept their composure. “Are you all right?” They looked to the door with a small sigh. “The queen....”

Zephyr glanced sideways at Ehren and smiled awkwardly, raising his hand to scratch the back of his head. "Hey there." He greeted the knight whom all assumed was male. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm worried about her, though." The young man lowered his voice, gesturing at the door. "She's upset about something. I'm not sure if I should go in or not."

Ehren was rather glad that he made it clear he didn’t know why the queen was upset. They would have likely let it slip about Mordred. “I....” should he go in? That was a good question. Ehren wanted to but they also knew that with matter of the heart, sometimes space was needed.
“Perhaps knock, my prince?” Eyes went a little wide behind the mask. Deep down, Ehren felt like Zephyr deserved to know, but this wasn’t their family. And... it was never easy dealing with the Vargo line. “I think she needs your support. Your are the most important thing to her.”

"Good idea." He chuckled wryly. "Maybe I can help." He raised his hand to knock at the door and inside the strumming of the instrument ceased.
Laelia lifted her head and shifted to set the chittern aside from where she was curled up on a chaise near the hearth. "Enter." She called.
Zephyr glanced at Ehren, inhaled deeply and then pushed the door open to walk inside. "Good evening, mother." Once the knight beside him fully entered the room, Zephyr allowed the door to close. "Ehren and I met at your door."
How should he approach this? His lips pursed. Upfront. Mother appreciated that. "Is something bothering you?"

The young knight always felt honoured to join the queen. Not to mention they hoped that they could help in some way too. For now, they would keep the mask on, but their fingers fidgeted with it. Emerald eyes glanced at Laelia- full of love, admiration, and support. They would be there for her, in any form she needed.
“Good evening, Laelia.” They spoke plainly to her. Laelia was both their queen and her friend. They gave a small nod of her head.

Laelia's eyes shifted back and forth between the two of them. She exhaled, raising fingers to rake through her hair. "Upset?" It was the mother of all understatements. This was an emotion she couldn't put a name on. It was like anger, guilt, anxiety, hurt and resentment all swirled together within her at the molecular level and refused to abate.
She lowered her eyes and stared in hard contemplation at the floor. "I have something to tell you, Zephyr." Her tone was conflicted, but she had to do it. She couldn't recall another time when she was so reluctant to tell someone the truth. Especially when she didn't know what effect it would have on her son.
Zephyr furrowed his brow. "What is it, Mom?" He moved forward, crouching down and putting a hand on her shoulder. He cast a thankful glance over to Ehren for their reassuring presence. "You can tell me anything." This legitimately worried him. Laelia Kaliba didn't hedge, didn't beat around the bush. Whatever it was, she must be afraid it would upset him. "Please tell me."
Laelia lifted her ice blue gaze to look into her son's face. She reached out to take his hand. "Zephyr. Your sire, Mordred Vargo, has return to Tyran. And he wants to meet you."

A small hand reached out to touch Zephyr’s shoulder. There was a gentle squeeze before letting it fall back to their side. It wasn’t just Laelia that they were there for, but Zephyr too. Their small smile was hopeful that he would take the news well.
For a moment the knight held their breath, just waiting for the words to come up. A small exhale was given when the news hit both their ears and the butterfly knight was looking to Zephyr. What was his reactions? What would he feel?
The knight was trying to balance their concern between Zephyr and Laelia. They took a few steps closer to the queen after she spoke.

Zephyr fell silent, lips parting but was devoid of speech. Colour drained from his face and he felt himself slowly keel backwards from his crouched position to sit on his ass on the floor. His mind was a jumble of conflicting emotion and questions.
"I...dunno how to feel about that." He murmured, feeling numb. He swallowed, his mouth dry. "I thought...thought he was in hell." His heart was being squeezed in a vice.
Laelia nodded slowly. "He was. He escaped somehow and was not forthcoming with me regarding the details. She kept a tight hold on her son's hand. "You don't have to feel anything. You have no obligation. No pressure to do or feel or be anything towards him that you do not want to." She sighed. "I wanted to tell you now so that you could be prepared if he approaches you."

The knight felt a little awkward in the family moment, but they held their composure. "And I'm sure, my prince, you do not have to go alone." Although they knew the Prince didn't take much for escorts. "Your mother could be with you and I can easily be there to protect you as well." Not that Ehren ever experienced Mordred in person.
"You mother is right though. This is your family and you do not have to do anything you don't want to. But no matter what, the choice is yours."

Zephyr lifted his eyes and looked somewhat bewildered between his mother and the knight. "I don't know what to do." His eyes were wide, confused.
"Whatever you want, Zephyr. You're old enough now that you can make your own decisions about that side of your heritage. I will support as best that I can, and I will not impede you or feel resentful towards you for wanting to know your father." Laelia had to swallow the bile down at her own words. Maternal instinct told her to be wary. The Arisalonian told her it was time to let her child fly on his own like her father did for her.
Leaning forward, Zephyr pressed his forehead into his mother's hand. "Thank you, Mother." He murmured. He still didn't know how to feel or what to do. But knowing that she wouldn't be mad at him for his curiosity, or try to hold him back from knowing any longer...it was of comfort.

They were unable to stop the small smile from their lips. They adored the both of them... "My prince, if you decide that you wish to not go alone to meet him and to have a back up to leave, I can be there for you. As a knight, or as a friend." The butterfly knight reached up to pull the mask from their face.
The glow was subtle, but as it faded, there was a slight difference from the 'knight'. Her body looked a little fuller, lashes much longer, and hair the colour of night sky fell just passed her shoulders. "I've kept your mother company when it was best to let people think she was just have the company of a friend around. I offer the same to you." She wasn't really thinking this would be a surprise, so she continued with a bow of her head.
"I only wish for your happiness, my prince. I hope that no matter what choice you make, I can serve you in some way."

Zephyr looked up as Ehren pulled the mask off their face and his eyes slowly widened. His jaw slackened and he asked the stupid question. "You're a girl?"
In truth, Laelia could have kissed Ehren in that moment. She felt the mood lighten considerably when Zephyr was surprised by Ehren's secret identity. A shocking and emotional revelation sandwiched by a pleasant one.

Ehren blinked a little. "I... Well, I prefer to be whatever someone wants me to be, but I suppose I was born a girl." She looked down at the mask. "It protects me from being found out and it gives me what I want... to be a boy. Althought your mother taught me that gender matters not in Tyran." Still, her family was looking for her. It was just easier to keep up the act.
"So, well..." She rubbed the back of her head, feeling a tad bit awkward. "I hope this was a bit obvious, but if you wouldn't mind telling the rest of the men. I've seen more of them they'd like, I'm sure." She was now blushing then. She saw more of Zephyr than she wanted to admit too.

Zephyr shook his head slowly. "No, I won't say anything to anyone." His cheeks puffed out as he blew air out of his mouth. "I had no idea. You're really pretty." He flushed and stammered. "I mean, but I guess I shouldn't say that if you want to be a boy."

Oh no. No, no this was bad. Laelia Kaliba saying she was pretty in a dress had Ehren nearly fainting. This? This was almost too much. "I.... Well, I suppose either gender could be pretty. I mean, gender is just..." Heck. Her face was far too red. "Going back to the topic at hand, my prince. If you wish to have a disguised sword by your side, I am rather well at fooling people like this." Should she say thank you for being called pretty? It was too late now.
"My queen!" She shouted in plea for help. "Are you okay?"

Zephyr couldn't help but grin. "I'd be happy just for your company, disguised or not." His smile fell somewhat. "I need to think...About what I want to do. I'll let you know, though." He said, finding his feet.
He leaned down and kissed Laelia's forehead. "I'll see you later, mother." And then clapped a hand on Ehren's shoulder as he left the room.
Laelia eyed Ehren with an amused look. "Are you?"

Ehren wasn't sure what to think of that grin, but she chalked it up to him just being as accepting and kind as his mother. He really was going to be a wonderful leader one day. "Do take your time, my prince." She bowed to him as he left the room, feeling her face cool down.
"Oh don't give me that look...." She sighed and her shoulders fell. "It was good to be honest with him. I think he needed to know, especially with..." She frowned a little. "I am fine, my queen.... but I am concerned about you. Moredred is back...." It wasn't going to go away. "Should I station more guards? Or...." Something inside of her heart felt a pang of....Concern? Worry? Jealousy, maybe?
