Monet wasn't certain where Mordred was, and the creature she'd come upon last night was locked in a room in Carrion. Choosing to stick to her plans, she started down the road that would take her to the path up to the tree on the hill that overlooked the keep Laelia was usually in. She'd had time to think about what to say to her, and yet she still had no clue. With her hood up and Darkling at her hip she saw the tree not far in the distance now.

In the distance at the tree Monet would see a familiar figure was waiting for her. Laelia leaned against the tree, arms crossed over her chest. As usual, she was armed and armoured, though perhaps tonight more than any other time the armour was symbolic of the guard she had erected around her heart.

Monet was a little surprised to find that Laelia was at the tree. Was she meeting someone there? Should she interrupt? Frowning a little, she steeled her resolve and continued forward until she was within distance for Laelia to notice her. Then she only moved a short way closer so they were close enough to speak without shouting. Monet smiled a little at her, but stayed guarded. It had been a while since she last came to see her. "Hello Sun of my Sky... I am surprised to find you here. Am I interrupting anything? If so, I can come back another time." The last time they'd been here was quite a... passionate evening. Monet tried to recall just how long ago that was though. A year, perhaps?

A pang tugged at her heart as Monet drew close and she saw Darkling resting at Monet's hip. Laelia raised a brow at Monet, the corner of her mouth quirking. "Interrupting?" She chuckled quietly, shaking her head. "This is our tree, Darkling." She recalled quite vividly what had happened the last time they met here. It had been...quite some time ago, but a memory she recalled fondly.
"No. I came to see you. I know your pattern of surveillance."

Monet smiled a little bit and moved closer to Laelia at her words, reaching out boldly to play with a stray bit of platinum hair. "I suspect I understand what you wished to see me about. I know you met with Mordred..." she allowed the conversation to get right to the core. "I came to speak to you about similar." Laelia would see a large faded bruise on Monet's cheek and jaw, strangely in about the same spot if Laelia recalled it, where she had struck Mordred.

Laelia's gaze followed the path of Monet's fingers to her hair and chose not to stop her. "Yes." She said with a nod. "He insinuated that the two of you had reunited."
A frown played at her lips and she leaned forward, brushing her lips against the fading bruise. "I'm sorry. I didn't know that would hurt you. You should not physically tie yourself to him. You put me in a difficult position. But I know saying that will fall on deaf ears." She sighed.
"What is your take, Monet?" She asked plainly, keeping a close eye on the other woman's expression for anything it told her that her lips did not.

(Monet) the lips touched her bruised skin and she felt the heat rush to her face in a way that Laelia often caused. Clearing her throat to gather herself she nodded a little. "I do not know exactly what you two spoke on, or what you know. One day, he had just... returned. I questioned him on it at first but he kept changing the subject. Last we all know he was in hell, so I didn't wish to force him to think on it, and I let it go. After a bit more time together, we reconciled. I've allowed him back into my heart again and... well, you can see from the bruise that our link was re-established as well. He deserved that hit though Laelia, so do not feel bad for this bruise. He wasn't being sensitive enough to your feelings."

"Or at all." Laelia muttered, shaking her head and pulling away. "He was tight-lipped with me as well and I don't trust him as far as I could pick him up and throw him." She looked at Monet pointedly. "Which is entirely too far as it is." Laelia was strong. She could throw him a reasonable distance.
"I don't feel bad for striking him. He took took liberties that are no longer his to take." She said tersely. "I only regret that you were injured as a byproduct of it."
Her lips pursed a moment, composing her thoughts before she continued. "What is his game, Monet? What does he want? What is he going to do?"

(Monet) noticed that her guard was up again, even with Monet. It couldn't be helped, she knew. Especially with the knowledge that the twins were bound again. If Laelia did not trust Mordred, then that meant Monet herself had just lost a considerable amount of trust as well with her. She sighed a little bit. "I understand your feelings, genuinely. In regards to you, I feel he only wishes to see our son, and possibly get to know him. Zephyr is old enough now that I believe he can judge a person's character well enough, could he not? You know that better than anyone. Mordred was a father once; he has experience in it. I can say honestly with you Laelia... I do not believe he will harm Zephyr." And despite her knowledge of the real situation, it seemed Monet truly believed this.

Laelia sighed with frustration and lifted her hand to rake fingers through her hair. "Do you though? Really, Monet?" She asked rhetorically. "Mordred abandoned and betrayed us all. He left us behind."
Laelia's teeth gritted and before she knew it, emotions she had never confessed to anyone out loud came spilling out. "It broke me." Her hand slapped hard against her chest. "I was dishonoured. While Mordred followed some whore into hell chasing the gods know what. Left me with a child who had no father and the consequences of that as a woman in the military. My father, my hero was ashamed me. And then he DIED. To try and help me bring Mordred back. Because I loved him. And it was MY FAULT." Her chest began to heave with the effort of unshed tears. "The guilt and shame I have endured all of these years for Mordred Vargo. And he does not feel remorse. How am I to make peace with this Monet?"

Monet closed her eyes momentarily as she recalled a similar pain with being abandoned. Laelia had gotten the brunt of all that pain. A small step brought her closer to Laelia as she opened her eyes again but she caught herself, knowing trying to physically comfort the woman right now was the wrong thing to do. So instead she stood and she heard her out. She let Laelia tell her all she needed to say, and to get off her chest. The guilt Monet felt now was almost suffocating. Waiting until she was finished and giving her a moment to collect herself, Monet responded.
"I will not pretend to understand the ways of honor in your situation. I may have been a Queen, but my duties never even slightly compared to the weight of yours. As a woman, you were injured physically and emotionally. Please try to not forget though, that he was possessed. He had no more control over his situation that we did at that time. You did what you felt you had to do, just as your father did what he felt he had to do for you. Zephyr was a result of love though, and Mordred... wouldn't have abandoned him if he'd had a choice. Its time to stop holding onto that guilt and anger from the past. Look at where all this brought you today. A Queen, with a son, and an army. You could have your pick of any suitor in the land if you so chose. You have power, and wealth, and beauty, and allies. Don't push to create more enemies in people who would rather have you on their side..." she meant Mordred, and by extension herself. "As always, you are far harder on yourself than you should be."

Laelia leaned off of the tree and began to pace restlessly back and forth. "Don't make excuses for him, Monet. He wasn't possessed when he left and chose to go into hell. That happened after. It was his choice to leave."
"I have all of that, yes." She came to a stop, fists clenching and her own eyes closed for a moment as she breathed deeply to regain her composure. "But I was a fool to trust." Laelia lowered her voice. "And I love you. But I can not do that to myself again."

(Monet) let out a sigh of mild frustration, not really at Laelia, but at the situation as a whole. "You allowed him in your heart once too. Perhaps... it is because he is also my family... but after losing him once, I cannot and will not lose him again. That doesn't mean I don't still love you as well. However, if Mordred is to become your enemy, that puts you and I at odds too. I don't want to hurt you again. So..." she offered a sad smile. "You should no longer trust me." Taking a step back she crossed her arms in front of her chest and looked away from Laelia, not wanting to see the reaction she might give. "We had our time, and it was beautiful. You'll always be my Sun, and I... your Darkling. We know one day though, that we might be on opposite sides of a battlefield. This is our proverbial field. I will be a different person from now on, so if you feel the need to kill me in your heart... I shall understand. At least we'll always have our memories," she reached out and touched the tree with her fingertips.

"Perhaps that is the difference between us, Monet. Your capacity for forgiveness where Mordred is concerned is inexhaustible. No matter what he does. I believe that even if he were to kill me and Zephyr in front of your eyes, you would still somehow find it in yourself to forgive him." She swallowed hard and glanced away. "You cannot help your nature any more than Mordred can. And no matter how much I care, I cannot tolerate it any longer. I cannot go back to how things were before."
"I have no desire to make an enemy of either of you. But you know my morals Monet. I don't need to issue a threat. You both should already know what I will abide and what I will not, and you will act accordingly to your own desires. Do not harm my son, and do not harm my capital. Those are my own requirements."
She sighed heavily. "Requests."

"You are right. No matter what... I will forgive him. I made up my mind on that after a lot of soul searching. He is my twin, my blood, my other half. I am only whole when he is with me... and that's simply how it is. Never did that diminish my love for you though, not at all. And... I will keep loving you; but now from afar. That is what is best for you, and so that is what I will do. If I wanted to, I would continue to keep you for myself... follow you... seduce you... and fulfill the greed of my longing for you with no care as to how that hurts you. That is who I am, and you've always known it. So take solace in the fact that I instead am giving you the peace of mind to know I will think no less of you from now on for how you view me."
"As for your... requests... I understand. Let us hope a situation never arises that those requests have to be challenged. Sun of my Sky... now setting into the horizon where I can no longer rely on your radiance to guide my way... is there anything else you wish to say, before we no longer have the chance to speak like this again?

She couldn't hide the grief in her face. The torment in her gaze, the quiver of her jaw, the moisture brewing her eyes. Laelia took a step forward and delivered one final kiss upon Monet's lips. A kiss laced with salt from the tears that trickled down and mingled with their mouths. A kiss filled with regret, longing and farewell.
Slowly Laelia pulled back and shook her head, smiling bittersweetly. "The sun didn't set, Monet. It was eclipsed. Be well, Darkling."
And with that Laelia turned and pulled the portal ring from her finger. She pulled it from the smallest finger of her left hand and tossed it to the ground where it widened into a portal. She stepped within and disappeared, the ring disappearing along with it.

Monet was caught off guard by the kiss and she felt a pain in her heart like a knife as the exchanged a final farewell to one another. Then... her words may as well have been the killing blow. She clearly let Monet know that no, it had been Monet's choice that killed the sun. Then she was gone.
Moving down the hill from where the exchange had taken place, she stop and looked back at the tree. The leaves began to turn the colors of fall, and fell one by one as if the tree were crying. Then, there was not a single leaf left. Monet was then gone.
The tavern. It was a place she felt she had visited nightly now... and always for a different reason. The poor waitress had no idea anymore how to approach or what to offer her. Monet collapsed at the darkest table in the room and blew the candle out before laying her head down on her arms and simply staying there to sulk and drown her thoughts by the tavern ambience.
