The work required of the irregulars kept him busy, even so busy that he had not given much thought to the Vargo's ressurgence. No one with half a brain expected them to remain far off, just like Baracus and other nearly forgotten legends. That included his own teacher, who had come back only to remain quietly aloof in New Arisalon.
Returning to the keep, he did so braced for a splitting of company. The Queen ruled as regent- regent of a young man who had as much Vargo blood (more perhaps) than Kaliba- and her history with them all was common knowledge. It was not as if he could blame her, but he also could not predict what had happened. So he returned, half due to reports due to the Queen- half due to concern about his "friend."
Calidus came and went as he pleased as of late, and was less announced that simply acknowledged. He wore a cuirass of boiled leather, studded with alloys of dimeritium and mythril. The armor was designed with careful defense in mind.

Sleep had not been easy to find this past few weeks, and last night it had not come at all. Her parting with Monet the previous evening had taken its toll, and though Laelia Kaliba was very skilled at hiding her emotions, there were some things even she could not hide. She had spent the majority of the day holed up in her office, instructions not to disturb her very clearly relayed amongst those with access to the Queen.
And yet when Calidus Thane arrived after having been away these past several weeks, he would feel eyes upon him practically begging for him to disturb her. As though they noticed a very palpable change in Her Majesty when the Commander of the Irregulars was near.
Without a word, the door to the study was opened at Thane's approach and he was allowed inside by the guard who stood vigil there. Inside Laelia's head raised and her gaze snapped quickly to the door. "I thought I said I wasn't to be-" She began tersely but the sentence trailed off as Calidus entered the room.
And suddenly she was out of her chair, breezing past him to promptly shut the door behind him. Following that she turned, raising her hands to grasp his face between her palms. Laelia leaped lightly, pressing insistently against him with her knees anchored at his hips. Her mouth claimed his in a kiss that was urgent, demanding and at the same time, diffusing.

Calidus was not one to decline such affection, but as his hands raised to brace her waist- his eyes closed against it- his mind allowed to focus- keen and sharp to just what was going on. Was this out of her missing him, out of blind need, out of her despair? It did not matter- not right now, and the analysis of the moment was forgotten at present in service to react. His arms, unnaturally strong through training and treatment both, snaked around her form as she pressed in, having left the ground.
He nearly thought he could feel her through his cuirass, and as he pulled from her searing kiss he managed no word- before meeting her with another kiss, at the corner of her mouth to invite her to say anything. He didn't pry. Didn't need to. Didn't need to consider anything except the reality of the moment. The Queen had her needs. Emotional on occasion..... He found no reason not to indulge her.
After a moment, he spoke. " My apologies. Difficulties in the area of operations... I'm nearly three days late."

Even after the kiss ended and their lips parted, she maintained the embrace for far longer than she ever had previously. If she were truly honest with herself, she would admit to all three. Despair, need, and absence...an emotionally problematic trilogy and then some.
"I've been keeping count." She murmured into his shoulder, breathing deeply. His warmth, his scent, the simple comfort he offered, Laelia absorbed it. "I want to hear your full report. But there is time for that later. I've missed your company. And a lot has happened since you left."
Slowly Laelia began to unfurl herself from around him, silently cursing her needy gesture. She despised how vulnerable and emotional she felt at the moment. And yet she could count on less than five fingers the people she trusted to keep her confidence and remain silent about her weakness. And he was one of those few.
Her feet touched the floor and she pulled away, making her way for the sideboard where she kept numerous spirits. Something stronger than her usual preference was in order and she poured them each two fingers of scotch.

He didn't withdraw from her, and as she withdrew to the sideboard he followed- close enough at hand to put his hand to the small of her back. He took his scotch from her, but kept close. Her moment of need was rare enough that he'd offer her, her fill.
"It was inevitable, they'd return as though do. Inevitable, that you would make this decision. But I can't imagine it feels any better at all." He said it bluntly, without need to conceal it.

"It doesn't." She exhaled heavily, the weight of emotional fatigue causing her to slump down upon the settee they had shared numerous times. "The lack of answers to my questions is the most infuriating of all. As if I don't deserve them." Laelia shook her head.
"I spoke with Mordred briefly. The same as ever. Avoidance, omission, unapologetic." Her lips pursed. "He asked for my permission to make contact with Zephyr. Everything within my being screams that no good can come of it. But Zephyr is his own man. All I can do is offer my warnings and let my son find his own way. My father would tell me he did the same for me." The corner of her mouth lifted wryly. Arisalonian non-interference.
"I said goodbye to Monet last night. We had not seen each other since before you and I..." Her words trailed off, certain he could piece together what she insinuated. "But saying goodbye to her was painful nonetheless. There is no line in the sand with her where Mordred is concerned. No point of no return. And...I'm just...too raw." Too hurt. "Even after all this time. It's ridiculous, I suppose. But I had just begun to bury this...to move on. And..." She inhaled a slow deep breath and took a deep pull from the glass of scotch.
"Someone grabbed the shovel and started digging."

" You deserve better, but this is the world you are in." he said sympathetically. " I imagine they will leave you be for a while. Leave your son, for a while." he said with a subtle clench in his jaw. " But in the end, such history makes for uneasy truces. Zephyr will learn as he will.... bumps and bruises and all." he said with a shake of his head.
"You must prepare to protect the order you have built."
It was not romance, but pure Arisalonian pragmatism. Then he said something perhaps unexpected. " And I will aid you in it, here. Far. All places in between. But, my friend..." He said with a sigh, " You will need to strengthen your alliances. The world has little sense in it when a Vargo is concerned. Allies will turn to enemies. Enemies may turn to Allies."

At the mention of deserving better, Laelia couldn't help a faint smile. "I am, if nothing else, a prideful creature." She admitted. Without a doubt, her pride stung something awful and it was something she could not abide by. "My line in the sand may be somewhat blurry, but it's there."
"I am." She agreed, finally relaxing with the conversation enough to shift her position and lean against him. Laelia glanced up at him, brow raising for a moment. For the former mercenary to offer such full and all-encompassing support...she hadn't expected it, no matter the closeness of their undefined relationship. Perhaps feeling sentimental, her hand slipped into his and she laced their fingers together.
"That means a great deal to me." Perhaps only now she was coming to realize what Calidus had meant by 'a friend that sticks around', when he had told her the type of friend he wanted to be to her.
"I believe they have no designs on the Capital...At least for now. Their progeny is in line to be King. It was what Mordred wanted. However...he is also fickle and I am aware that his ambitions could change at any given moment and words said could soon mean nothing at all. I have no wish to be their enemy and in truth it is better for the Capital if I am not. But if they press the matter, I have no qualms responding. I made that clear to Monet. I don't need to make threats to them. They know my moral position."
The logical planning mind of Laelia Kaliba easily overcame her emotion and pushed to the forefront at his subtle urging, whether that was his intention or not. "In truth I have been a far better diplomat than I had anticipated. Everyone seems to want me at their wedding lately." She jested. "But in all seriousness, your point is well made."

" Quietly, you should speak to your family. " he said simply, but did not elaborate. There were things he had found in his weeks away, things that he could not bear to deliver to her now.
" But that is enough of that..." he said as he took his scotch in a quick draught. " Tell me about these weddings?" He asked with a small smile.

With a slow nod of consideration, she agreed. "I will do so, it has been too long since I have been home."
"It was interesting. The Sef invited me to the wedding of their clan leader Hectate. It was an theatrical and frivolous affair. The Bride's father of all people, took it upon himself to escort me on the back of a thunder hawk. It was a decent flight, all things considered. I enjoyed myself and despite the fact that Regna Sef was in my dungeon at the time, it wasn't particularly awkward."

" That sounds like quite the affair. Weddings perhaps should be more frivolous, to be fair." he said with a shrug of his shoulders, for a moment thoughtfully considering what he just said. " And what other affairs have filled your social calendar?" He asked as he arched a brow as he looked over her for a moment. " A shame I've not been around for any of them."

Laelia chuckled, shaking her head. "Nothing that would pique your interest, I'm afraid. Though it may interest you to know that it was Sergeant McArthur, yes I promoted her, who captured Regna Sef after he blew up a church. I was particularly proud."
Her head canted as she set aside her empty glass of scotch. "Perhaps my social calendar isn't as full as I originally led you to believe." The corner of her mouth lifted as she deftly turned on the chaise and tossed a leg over his thigh, straddling his lap. "I'm sure I could pencil you in somewhere."

He slid his hand over her hip and nodded, leaning close. " And where do I end up on that schedule?" he asked with a shrug of his shoulders. " I'm clear up for the next few weeks. The Irregulars have good leadership across the organization- they can have a little less of my attention for a few days before I get to the real work."

"Wherever you like." Laelia leaned in, murmuring against his ear. "At the top...on the bottom...right..." She shifted in his lap just the right way. "In the middle?"
"I want to spend some time with you." She paused, eyeing him in all seriousness. "You've done well with them as expected. I'm going to confiscate you then."
