Perhaps it would be doubtful. If Victor had an ability like Verity's where the truth was often as blunt as a slap in the face, he would have realized...his twin was no longer content to remain sitting at home while Victor went off on his adventures. And she was not content to idly wait for him to return home when he had not even told her where he was going.
Perhaps she was more shrewd that Victor gave her credit for. Once she had determined he had left, it had not been difficult for Verity to determine he had left on a merchant ship destined for the Raven Islands under an assumed name. The only name on the manifest that no one recognized was Devrim Ironhand. At least she had a name to inquire after once she arrived.

She was not so inconsiderate as to steal away like her brother. While she disliked it, the reality was that there were very real differences between the role of her brother and herself in her family. Victor was a soldier, an experienced fighter and ridiculously strong. There was no doubt that he was capable of handling himself. He was tested, where Verity was not. When Victor disappeared without a word, it was worrisome, and irritating (to his twin, at least), but it wasn't a crisis. If Verity were to do the same, there was no doubt her family would leave no stone unturned to find her and make certain she was safe.
And so it was that Verity found her father. She loved her mother, but Lady Rosewyn Kaliba was protective of her children, her youngest daughter in particular and it was doubtful that her mother would approve of Verity leaving on her own to find Victor. In this, she realized her father was likely the more prudent choice.

Arcanus Kaliba, had returned- not from death- but from time itself. Trapped in what was an endless epoch, his sanity protected by the Great Prime Fire, given to him to save a troubled man who had also made it out.... Arc was different than remembered. Prescient instead of simple wise. The old general's youth was a memory, but his vitality- his masculine presence had intensified in age, even as his hair was more silver than gold in the right light.
As Verity came, he smiled- an odd thing to see on a face used to stoic endurance of the chaos Tyran had thrown at him for every eon it had existed.
" Verity." He said her name with an almost reverence. The last several months, it had been difficult to forget that he had missed their growing up- between the two children and his two grandchildren- one the future king- the other a daughter of a former goddess, and his once prodigal son... He had a lot to get up to speed on.

Verity blessed her father with that sunny smile she was so well-known for. One might think that it would have been awkward to suddenly have a father thrust into her life after living her whole life without one. But for Verity, it hadn't been awkward at all. Between her family's stories of him and the bond of light he had passed to the twins, she sometimes felt as if she'd known him all her life.
She kissed his cheek and then pulled back to fold her hands in front of her, gazing at her expectantly. "I want to find Victor." She began. "I know where he's gone. But I didn't want to leave without your blessing."

Arc spoke without much reserve " I do not know what your mother would say... beyond no." He said with a small smile at the peck on his cheek. " But I know a little about adventures. You shouldn't be faulted for wanting one. Tell me, what is the most versatile spell in the Third Level of Thought? " Arc was both warrior and mage, a mystical swordsmen who could warp reality if need be. He had been annointed God of Balance- the Arbiter between what was Fair and what was merely 'good'. He had served every divine force that had been- and some that had not.
To say he was an intimidating parental figure was an understatement. But his words, tempered with love, gave the young woman and opportunity. Show herself capable in theory, and she would be given leave to pursue capable action.

"In the Third Level of Thought?" Verity echoed, lifting her finger to place it adorably on her bottom lip in thought. Her smile didn't falter, however, seemingly amused by the question. "The most versatile spell in my opinion, is Fly. It can be used as a method of travel, of escape, to get past obstacles, and has applications for both offense and defense. The spell component is easy enough to acquire and it is easy to carry many of them on one's person. It lasts for a decent amount of time, and with experience one can usually manage to bestow its effects on more than one target."
She smiled proudly, confident that she had explained her case well and convincingly. "What do you say to that, father?"

Arc nodded. " To control ones environment is to control the battle. Something the gift of flight can do very easily. It is a wise choice, and speaks much to your creativity. I would warn you however... when magic fails- as it is oft to do...your power will turn against you as quickly as your fall to earth." The sage of a warrior leaned in and kissed his daughter's forehead.
"There is a ship going to take gifts intended to mark our long standing alliance with Queen Raelle. You may board it. I've taken the liberty of arranging your passage on it. Go. Find your brother. Remember what has been taught to you, and Remember that our duty is beyond the world we see."

Verity giggled at his answer. It was very wise, indeed. Flying was all well and good until you were falling. "I will do my best to make sure my feet are firmly planted on the ground again before that happens. You have my thanks, Father." She hugged him tightly. "I'll remember."
She flushed with excitement. She was going on an adventure! By herself! And she didn't have to sneak away to do it! Well...about that. Verity stopped short of the door and tossed an impish look over her shoulder. "You'll give me a head start with Mother, won't you?"
And without waiting for an answer, she was gone to pack.

The frigate seemed alone in the vast blue-black surroundings of the ocean. Standing at the bow of the ship, Lady Verity Kaliba pulled the heavy fabric of her cloak more tightly around her. While the sun still warmed the days, once the darkness descended the wind on the high seas were bitterly cold.
"Lady Verity, would you like to go below deck? You must be chilled. I can have the cabin maid place a warming pan in your bunk."
Verity glanced over her shoulder and smiled at Captain Randall, shaking her head. "Thank you, Captain, but no. I rather enjoy the peaceful vision of it, don't you?" She turned her attention back to the dark water again, illuminated by nothing but the moon.

"As you wish, My Lady." The captain of the vessel bowed slightly and turned to see about his other tasks.
Verity wondered if Victor thought the same things when he looked upon the sea. Or if his perception was something entirely different. Did he see dark swallowing depths where his twin saw peace and reflection? She was eager to ask him. With a quiet sigh, she murmured. "I wish you'd stop running away and talk to me."

Captain Randall frowned deeply as he peered through the spyglass. The two ships had been ahead of them for the better part of the day, but now with night having fallen the frigate was coming up on them quickly and would eventually pass them.

Trent Kaliba had began moving his pieces along the board, and at this moment- a few short lived pawns were moving across the sea- prepared to be fed to a piece he had decided he needed to ensure was better trained. Mirrors gifted to him by a Goddess of Magic made him an interested and well informed audience as the world was open to his scrutiny.
Captain Randall was a brave and seasoned captain. The ship would have little trouble surviving this onslaught. But....how would Verity respond to the impudence of vagrants- most of them corrupted beyond 'redemption'?
So was the experiment. Not unlike the Lethea awaiting Victor in the Raven Islands- it was time to sharpen his younger siblings, or cast them aside.

They were flying Islander flags, which wasn't normally a problem. If they'd been closer to the Raven Islands. It was still a bit far enough, but not outside the realm of possibility, he supposed. The Pax Vigil was skirting the perimeter of a storm with no desire to enter it and put the crew and the good below deck at risk. Not to mention the precious cargo they were carrying in the form of House Kaliba's youngest daughter.
Verity was sleeping soundly beneath the deck in the guest cabin which had been made comfortable for her. The lull of the waves agreed with her, it seemed. Captain Randall had ensured her ever whim was catered to, even though she didn't have many. She did enjoy the warming pan the cabin maid set beneath her covers before she tucked in for the night. It helped ward away the chill of the damp air that settled in the blankets.
She awakened with a start to the sound of cannons. Bolting upright in her cot, her eyes widened as she clutched the blankets tightly in her fingers. Impossibly still, she waited.
Boom! Boom-Boom!
She hadn't been imagining it. The sound was quickly followed by cracking wood and shouting above deck. The ship was under attack.

Adrenaline spiked in her veins and she threw back the covers, touching bare feet to the cold wood floor. She was swinging her heavy blue cloak over her shoulders when the door to her cabin burst open and the cabin maid hurried in, closing the door behind her. "My Lady, we're under attack! Pirates! Bar the door, they mustn't find you!"
Verity frowned. The two ships that had been stalking ahead of them all day? Had they happened to spy the well-dressed lady and her pretty blond hair glowing in the sunlight? If so, they no doubt believed there were riches to be gathered from this vessel and determined it was worth the risk.
Verity smiled reassuringly to the cabin maid. "I want you to listen very carefully to me." She grasped the girl's shoulders and peered at her in earnest. "I want you to make sure every flame is doused and then I want you to bar yourself in this room. Do you understand?"
The cabin maid began to protest but Verity put a finger to her lips and grinned. "Well if they're looking for me, it would be a shame to disappoint them, don't you think?" She took hold of her double-bladed staff and swept out the door of the cabin leaving the poor cabin maid behind her, gaping like the fish they'd eaten for dinner.

"My Lady, your shoes!" But it was too late. Verity was gone.
Above deck she stole and was immediately met by the snarling visage of an unwashed face and filthy clothes. The pirate lunged for her wrist. "Pretty lady." He sneered.
A twinge of fear caused the hairs to raise on the back of her neck to be replaced by indignance. "Swine." Verity countered with disgust, driving the blade of the staff into the pirate's foot. The man howled in pain and rage, releasing Verity, only for her to sweep backwards and pull the blade from his foot.
Swinging the staff in a well practiced figure eight, she then thumped it to the deck. A crackle of pale blue flame engulfed the man, leaving behind a charred husk and the smell of burnt ozone.

Verity quickly assessed the situation. The Pax Vigil was caught between the two pirate ships. She noted they no longer flew the flag of the Raven Islands. Imposters to lower the guard of other ships, she presumed. maneuvered her way through the combatants towards the starboard side of the ship where a plank and hooks were connecting the ships.
"Lady Verity, get below deck!" She heard Captain Randall shout from somewhere behind her, though he was otherwise occupied with trying to avoid behind skewered. There was little clout behind his command. No, she wouldn't be going back below deck like a good girl while men died above.
She swung her staff and several arcane bolts flashed like silver darts towards the back of the pirate fighting the good captain. Verity began to speak in the spidery language of the arcane, and several beings flitted into existence around her. Fey spirits lingered protectively to come to her defense while she was otherwise occupied.

A scream from behind her signaled an enemy who came too close and fell beneath the radiance of her spirit guardians. Soon, it was become clear that the pirates had made a grave error.
Verity began to speak again, right hand gripping her staff and the left passing through the air, shaking runes with the tips of her fingers. The sky yawned, opening up to allow a brilliant light shine through, illuminating the sky as if it were daytime. The light dove towards the enemy ship, impacting it with all the force of a cannon. The main mast toppled over, crushing the helm and much of the deck. The sails caught on fire and soon the entire deck was in flames.

Trent quietly observed the devastation, half expecting Milhin to join him in the tower. She no doubt would have news for him after speaking to Rosewyn, or complaints. Either way he was looking forward to the effect. The wanton slaughter young Verity was capable of brought a smile to his face. While his brother could do the same though in a much more mundane way- he did so emotionally involved- in a rage urged on by the righteousness that beat within his chest.
His sister, did it because it made sense. A+B=C. Formulaic. He was almost proud.

Verity watched passively as men still aboard the deck screamed, engulfing with flame and hurling themselves off of the deck only to be swallowed up by the ocean instead. It should have bothered her. Sweet, gentle Verity. Who didn't want to hurt a fly. It should have. But it didn't. They had attacked first, after all. Would they have offered mercy? No. They would have killed every man on board, plundered the cargo, raped the women and perhaps tried to ransom Verity back to her family. They didn't even deserve consideration.
The remainder of the pirates made an effort to break away from the crew of the Pax Vigil, leaping back aboard their remaining ship and cutting the ropes that held them.
"We've run them off, men!" Captain Randall shouted and the deck erupted with yells of elation and huzzahs for a job well done. Verity was nearly inclined to join them. Except it didn't sit right with her. The pirates were attempting to retreat and they were just going to let them? Perhaps the Captain was simply relieved that they had survived. Perhaps he believed the cost outweighed the potential benefit of taking them out.

Verity disagreed. In the short term, perhaps the cost would be higher. Ammunition, perhaps a a few more lives. But if the pirates continued to live and raid another day, that was far worse in Verity's mind. And besides...A mage such as herself could inflict such damage that it incurred little cost for their own side.
"Captain. I don't intend to allow them to flee. What they do is unforgivable and they will continue to do it for as long as they are alive. They do not understand mercy. Better they be made an example of."
"Lady Verity, with all due respect, a night chase is unlikely to be successful." The Captain bowed.
"We needn't chase them. I shall see to it." Verity crossed the desk and all fell silent as she reached the port side, raising her hands to cast once more. The sky opened again, and soon there was nothing left of the remaining ship but flotsam.

The wanton devastation was little more than means to an end, to Trent Kaliba. The Magister, did however recognize the way Verity executed her will with precision and without petty sentimentality for or against her victims. Cold. Resolute. Unshaken.
He revealed himself amidst the cheers of solders at her display, and at the slight fear of Captain Randall. Black boots, and charcoal trousers accentuated his dark robes, robes that were to mark his station as magister- the rich layered garment was woven with protections, and inserts of rune cast adamantine, made light through alchemical processes kept quite secret. His hands, encased in gloves of his own design that helped him conserve his mana, and better control his more 'unstable' abilities- clapped gently in applause- his lips turned up in a genuine smile.
Verity's gift was a powerful one, one that he could only stand before because of his lineage, and the same enchantments that protected his mind and identify as his less..'amiable' alter ego. Still he was sure to be truthful around his sweet sister. It was easier for everyone that way. No false pleasantries.
" You make House Kaliba proud with your decisive victory here- too often do we practice restraint and sacrifice the lives of good soldiers."

She was grinning from ear to ear. She had never felt that kind of elation. Not at the killing, but at the cheers of the Pax Vigil's crew. Her accomplishments had never been cheered in such a way and she found herself flushing modestly at their praise.
A stark contrast to her older brother, Verity was clad in bare feet and her heavy cloak over her nightgown, staff still in hand. She looked over her shoulder as the soldier's reactions to her brother's arrival. Her head canted, a proud smile curving her mouth at his compliment. "I'm so happy I was able to help." She either hadn't noticed, or was ignoring the cold.
"I couldn't let them go to attack someone else. Maybe someone less able to defend themselves. That would be foolish." She shook her head with confusion. "What are you doing here, Trent?"

" The Beacon. " he said as if such would be simple. It did not ring as a lie, as it was a perfect answer to a slightly different question. The beacon was a small magical artifact made part of each ship. It alerted the mainland of attack or threat- something that wouldn't always warrant a magister's visit, but due to the passenger, it was easy to assume why.
" I came when I knew it to be triggered, but I admit- I waited to see how you would handle the situation. I am glad I did." He said as he put his hands on his sister's shoulders and gave them both a squeeze, drawing the heavy cloak around her for warmth, while she'd not feel the damp and cold- she'd suffer it in the morning.
" Let's get you below deck. No need to let our heads get foggy with their adoration. " He said low, leaning close enough to be hear at his sister's cheek.
" The rest of you, back to work- and get on course. The seas near the Raven Islands are in a state of emergency. I'll be ensuring you dock, undetected."

She was cold. It wasn't until they stepped below deck that the fact seemed to dawn on her and she began to shiver.
It was dark. "Oh good, she did what I told her to. The last thing we needed was a fire if we took damage." With an uttered word, a small light materialized about her fingers. When they reached her cabin, Verity found the door barred and remembered her instructions to the cabin maid. "Kara, It's me, Verity! All is well." She called.
The cabin maid opened the door and heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank the powers that you're not hurt, My Lady. We chased them off, then?"
Verity smiled. "They can't hurt anyone anymore." She reassured the cabin maid. "Once you've collected yourself, the lanterns need re-lighting."
"I'll have it done in a hurry, My Lady, and I'll bring another warming pan for your bed."
Once the cabin maid was gone, Verity sat down on her bed, pulling her feet up beside her beneath the cloak. "An emergency near the Raven Isles? What is going on? Is there any word of Victor?" Verity asked worriedly.

" Victor is....safe. He's ran into the an old friend. No one has yet moved to the beast that haunts the waters. This ship is undetectable due to an enchantment I've laid. It will reach shore, tomorrow morning- space folded to accomodate the journey." he spoke of the powerful magic as one would talk about hammers and nails.
" Tyr has lost himself to some horrific monstrosity As of now, Baracus has stood against these spawn. Meanwhile, we will see if the Raven Islands will muster a response, or if someone else will do so." He didn't seem concerned with the cabin maid- due to previous experience, Trent did not trust maids.

Verity didn't question the reference to such powerful magic. While she may not have access to such power, she understood much of the theory and knew her brother possessed such arcane prowess. Verity's magic came from somewhere far different with alternate abilities.
Verity sighed. "I'm glad Victor is safe. I don't suppose you know where he is?" She smiled with false hope, believing it was unlikely he would give her that information.
"New Arisalon will not respond, I assume."

" Father is currently weighing our options. The Raven Islands are an ally. As such, we may turn our blades on this beast soon enough." He said with a nod. Alliances were important to honor at a time like this, the world could be watching.
" He is within a port close to the capital, if not the capital according to reports. I have little reason to be too thoughtful about his location for now. What he does- he does out of some misplaced need to understand what he has done. I am not a counselor, a priest, or a bartender. He'll find his way well enough."

"If we do...we need to make sure we aren't leaving ourselves open to attack if one finds itself at our doorstep." Verity remarked idly.
Then she frowned, indicating her disapproval of Trent's seeming indifference regarding whatever demons were eating at their brother's mental state. "No...you are more than those things. You are his brother." She said quietly.

" Which is why I have not seen him stripped of his rank. New Arisalon will need him before long. " He said half in warning, half in simple statement.
" As for his demons, the world is full of them. The ones within, he must put in check. When I was his age, I was taught the difficult lessons that there is power in pain. In passion. If he must feel so much, then he had best put it to good use. " He said with a nod as he turned towards the door.
" This visit was not about him though Verity. Not all things are about him. Or Father. Or Mother. It was about you. Your deed. Your accomplishment. Savor tonight. Think nothing of the sentiments others would burden you with. Know that today, you made decisions that will shape many lives. It is a good day to contemplate upon this victory, and prepare for the next."
