Verity sighed, holding her tongue. Much of what Trent said was true, but...surely there needed to be a better way to manage the trauma some soldiers endured and internalized. Her lips pursed and then she let it go. It wasn't Trent's job to go after Victor, or to care. That roll belonged to his twin alone.
"Thank you for coming to see me, Trent." She said, slipping beneath the covers with her cloak and all. She was feeling very chilled now, especially her feet. "Please give mother and father my best and tell them I am perfectly well. You know how mother worries." Particularly about her youngest daughter.

" This is why I remain in my tower, Verity. " He said with a shrug but didn't look back. " I'm proud of you and I love you." Trent eixited the room and the ship in one forward step before space folded in on itself to accomadate the arch mage's will. He had come a long way- and he for all his machinations remembered how much he wanted someone to say that to him.

"I love you too, Trent." Verity pulled the covers up to her chin and smiled, shivering. The cabin maid came in shortly after Trent left and put a brass pan filled with warm coals beneath the covers at Verity's feet to help warm them.
After the cabin maid left, Verity's eyes closed. She was tired. The magic expenditure had been great but not overly taxing. Her reserves were high due to the magic she had inherited from Dreanna through her father. But she was worried about Victor. She hoped he wasn't going to do anything foolish. "I'd better get the change to tell you that I'm proud of you and that I love you too." She murmured aloud to herself. And if their bond meant anything at all, was as strong as they both claimed, her twin would know how she felt.

Victor woke to the morning breeze that brought the salty smell of the Raven Islands to his nostrils. Turning on his side, to where she was- the Princess of those Islands, he for a moment whispered a prayer not to any god in particular, but perhaps to them all. "Just let this last a little longer." Bare chested, he felt the tickle of her hair as she slept close- her skin always warm, despite the autumn wind.
The morning bathed them both with the growing light of dawn, muted by the threadbare curtains caught by the air. His eyes wandered, while his palm slid slow up from her quadricep up the outer curve of her thigh. "Nearly, seven..." He said low, tone a bit taunting. "No army laying siege yet, Princess."

Raylinn let out a soft, throaty chuckle without opening her eyes. The faint breeze stirred the scents in the room, calling to mind the thrilling events of the night before. She didn't want to open her eyes. There was no need for sight for her to know whose hand traveled with such familiarity across her skin. If she kept her eyes closed, it wasn't morning yet. It was still night, their night, the morning had yet to come and there was still time left to enjoy these stolen, precious moments with him.
Foolish fantasies, but ahhh...it was so nice to imagine.
"I told you there was nothing to worry about. I took care of it." Well, her woman took care of it. Hopefully. Since her father or brothers weren't kicking down the door she preferred to believe her plan had gone without a hitch. "It would have been nice if you'd left off that part about the time, though. I don't want it to be morning already." She grinned and snuggled deeper into his chest, looping an arm over his waist and hooking her leg tight over his as if that was enough to hold Victor Kaliba hostage.

"Devrin Ironhand, Devrim Ironhand..." The innkeeper looked through his book of guests currently staying with him. "Ah, there he is." The man tapped a name scribbled in the book.
The innkeeper closed the book, narrowing an eye suspiciously at Verity, taking in her fine heavy cloak of deep blue and the polished platinum buckles up the front of her blouse. "You related to 'im? You look like 'im'."
Verity flashed a sunny smile, nodding. "I'm his twin, of course. I'm going to go up and surprise him, if you don't mind. Would you mind putting breakfast out for us?" She slid some coins across the counter before she grinned impishly and headed up the stairs.

Victor could snap chains like gossamer thread, could bend iron like a willow reed. But here, he did not use his strength. The young scion of House Kaliba, far from the expansive lands built over time, maintained with constant vigilance dared not move as she ensnared him. For once- he was held captive by something that was no burden.
Then he felt something. A tingle. A familiarity. Usually that felt good- like the sun on your face.
This time it felt a bit like dread, even before he knew what it meant. He swallowed for a moment, his face losing some color. He glanced to the door, then back to the naked woman he was tangled up with.
" Yes... I'm thinking I shouldn't of said anything about the time. Or armies beating down doors. Or anything..." he said to her, still not quite believing what he felt.

Of course, Raylinn had no idea what he was sensing. Or that he'd gone pale, because someone was still pretending the darkness behind her closed eyelids was nighttime. Utterly clueless of looming doom, her mind had turned to other ways she could keep Victor too occupied to bother with how high the sun was above the horizon.
A hand dipped between their bodies, boldly seeking to put her new plan into action.
"Well," she began, delighted that the morning rasp to her voice added that sultry husk every woman dreamed of using at least once in their life, "I can think of many ways to keep your lips busy..."

Down the hallway she swept, feeling so incredibly sneaky and proud of herself for getting to this point and finding her brother all on her own. Verity couldn't help the bounce in her step and the jaunty little tune that hummed in time with her footfalls.
It was her twin brother and he was likely still asleep, she figured. He was going to be so surprised when she walked in unannounced! She pointed her finger at the door and murmured the quick incantation of the Knock spell to unlock the door.
The lock clicked and Verity threw open the door, waltzing inside and calling out with sing-song tones. "Oh VictorrrrrraaaaaAAAAAHHHHH!"

First, there was the alarm spell that went off in his head- it was silent otherwise, but in his head it calmly reminded him that an intruder was present. At that, he reached for his sword but didn't get it. Instead, he quickly moved to try and pull the covers over the both of them as he realized it wasn't a battle cry, but the shriek of his sister- dressed fashionably- there went his disguise and the secret of his presence and literally screaming in the early morning of his room.
" GET OUT!" he screamed, trying as much to cover himself as fiery redhead next to him. The scream turned into a hiss of a whisper as if that oculd undo what had already been done. " No- no, come in and shut the f-king door!"
Both with his blanket and with his frame he angled to block poor Raylinn from his sister, the world's greatest gods-be-damned detective.

Raylinn was no help when it came to keeping them modest. He attempted to pull the cover up and her instinct was to scramble out from under them to free a hand - yes, that one - and throw a fireball towards the door. She leapt buck naked out of the bed, prepared to throw a second one...
The fireball was halfway across the room before she realized this was no ordinary intruder.
"VERITY DUCK!"

She wasn't so freaked out by his scream at her. As children and as close as they were, they'd still had their childish spats and had often screamed at each other that exact phrase. But...there was a woman....
A naked woman. In his bed. And he was naked. She immediately turned around and made an awkward rush for the door, only to turn around immediately when Victor told her to come back and close the door. She yanked the door shut and turned around, eyes widening. Verity squeaked.
There was a fireball coming right at her.
Immediately she grasped the hem of her cloak and pulled it up, ducking behind it to shield herself. The runes woven into the fabric reacted, flaring with silvery light and caused the fireball to fizzle upon contact.
Her back hit the door and after a long moment she gathered the courage to lower the cloak just enough so her eyes could peek overtop of the fabric. "Raylinn?" She asked weakly.

The fireball had caused a bit of panic, as sprang from the bed, trying to use some form of magic to dampen the spell. Luckily, before it made impact Verity reacted. SHe'd alwatys been the better student at that sort of thing. Relieved from that, but now out from under the blanket- he grasped at a sheet to wrap around him while throwing the blanket in Raylinn's direction.
He didn't answer for Raylinn- instead, he looked around the room and thought about where her clothes were, and how they could get her out before the whole world knew she was there. " Shit...shit...damn we're in a tight spot." He muttered, moving across the room. Where were her undergarments?
Oh. Yeah. Never mind.

Her knees nearly gave out when Verity's quick thinking saved her from accidentally murdering a Kaliba princess and saved two nations from a political nightmare and/or war. Catching the blanket, she wrapped it around herself but not before Verity saw a lot more of her than either of them had ever wanted. Now both twins had saw her naked. Awkward.
So there was Verity, looking all prim and proper, a golden specimen of feminine, royal perfection. And there was Raylinn, the Raven Island Princess, with sex tousled hair, unmistakable love bites marring her neck, bruises the same size as Victor's fingertips along her exposed upper arms and....other places... For a moment all Ray could do was blink owlishly at her friend (who was also her lover's sister.)
"Uh. Hi?"
She slid her overwide eyes to Victor, only now having the good graces to blush. Busted. But at least it wasn't her mother.

Raylinn's nakedness didn't bother her much. They had public baths in New Arisalon. Women commonly bathed together. She was more embarrassed at having caught them together.
"I...Hi." She waved awkwardly, letting go of her cloak and allowing it to drape back down around her. Her face was nearly as crimson as Raylinn's hair. "I didn't know you were here?" She offered as an excuse for just walking in like she owned the place.
She then turned her attention to Victor and put her hands on her hips, giving him a look of disapproval that she must have learned from their mother. "Did you leave without telling anyone just so you could meet her without anyone knowing?"

Victor would've noted in his defense, he didn't remember being that rough. But...well he was as strong as a titan. He glanced to Raylinn almost apologetically, as he continued to wander the room, finally getting to her dress, draped over the small table they had eaten dinner at the night before.
He had promised himself, he'd get information about the Lethea. Nothing else. Now he was flirting with having a scorched sister, an exposed tryst, and no doubt already drew the attention of the inn keep and possibly the town guard.
They really didn't have time for all this.
" No." He said calmly, trying to breathe before adding in quickening cadence " But, it is kind of important for everyone that people don't know. Something that is becoming less and less likely by the minute." After a beat, he made his impulsive plan.
" Now, we need to bribe the inn keep, you two need to get to the castle- and I need to get on the road to the Lethea."

Didn't know she was here? Blink. "Well, I kind of live here," she said, pointing out the obvious. Of course, she meant "on the Islands" and not "in this crappy tavern." It wasn't her fault her brain wasn't exactly working at full speed.
She fell silent as Verity's ire turned upon her brother, watching. Hopefully both were too preoccupied to notice the instinctive wince that flashed across her face before a cheerful mask fell over her still flushed features. With as much dignity and composure as she could muster, Raylinn sashayed across the room to claim her dress from Victor's grasp.
"Calm down, Victor. Just because I'm up here doesn't mean anything, and I'm sure Verity is just as concerned as you as making sure nobody knows I was in your bed." No longer caring about modesty, she let the blanket drop and leisurely stepped into the dress. A faint wiggle got the material up over her hips and she continued speaking as she made deft work of the front few buttons.
That shield of calmness nearly shattered at Victor's final statement and if looks alone could turn a man into ash, Verity would have needed to fetch a broom and dustpan to bring her brother home in.
"Excuse me?"

"I'm not going to say anything." She offered a reassuring smile to Raylinn.
Verity glowered at her brother, stalking up to him and swatting him on the shoulder. Not like her puny smack would hurt him. So she did it again a few more times for good measure. "This is all your fault, you...you big dope!" She scolded. "If you had just told me you were leaving in the first place, I wouldn't have got worried and come to find you and had to deal with pirates and...Lethea?"
"I'm not going to the castle." Verity scoffed with a dismissive wave of her hand. "I'm coming with you, of course. I came to find you. I'm not leaving you now."

" That noise, the racket, the flicker of flame- all of it drew attention. I'd imagine-" he gestured to Verity, " She didn't come without some other reason to justify it. You two can save face, I can skip town- and you both can meet me at the caverns. I won't go in without you." He said, not forgetting just what he had foolishly invited her to before.
" If that doesn't work for you, Raylinn---" He stopped at Verity's words, and around her fourth smack which was starting to feel like she was getting hit by this point.
" Well, shit. Screw it all. We'll all go." He shook his head frustrated, and knowing enough to not feed into Raylinn's anger, he addressed it with little more than his surrender, and moved to grab his haversack.

She arched a brow at Victor, wanting to be mad but damn the man for not giving her the ammunition she needed. At least, none that she could act on.
Up until Verity walked through that door Ray had been determined not to let her mother or anyone else know what happened between her and Victor. It gave the Island Queen too much power to use to try and snag herself the marriage alliance she'd been drooling over Ray's entire life. That's not how she wanted things to go with Victor, maybe it was stupid and foolish but last night had been special to her, dammit.
But Victor wasn't supposed to be so damn agreeable about it. That hurt.
"Damn right I'm going with you. You don't get to invite me along only to take off and leave me behind. We can get supplies from the castle after I check in and be gone before lunch."

" So you are going to the castle." He said as he glanced towards her with a little smile. For a moment, he ignored Verity. " If you think it's better for us to wait for you here, we will. Roaming the streets would be unwise." He said as he reached out to take her hand, his touch surprisingly gentle for his strength. Silently, he mouthed two words Kalibas were not known to say often. The angle kept anyone but her from seeing it.
While he could only guess at her anger, being more than a little oblivious to the female heart, he knew that something they had both wished was not a little more complicated, hell- a lot more complicated, a lot earlier.
Best to face it. I mean, f--k it. He was Victor F'n Kaliba.

Verity smiled as she got her way with Victor agreeing to take them along. She was no longer content with Victor leaving her behind while he went off on adventures without her. She wrung her hand slightly, having caused more damage to her own hand than his shoulder.
She'd expected more of a fight from her twin but she wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. "Good. Is there anything we need to get before we go?"

Two words and an affectionate touch shifted the flames within her. Victor had way too much power. Tension seeped out of her shoulders and the tight line of her mouth relaxed into a small, tender smile. She nodded faintly at Victor before turning towards Verity. "Basic supplies. Unless Victor's changed his plans we're going deep into the caverns via an old mine entrance here on the main island."
Her eyes shifted to Victor briefly; she couldn't stop looking at him and wasn't exactly happy with the sudden addiction to checking his expression every two seconds. Blech. She didn't want to be one of those women. A little willpower got her focus back on his twin.
"I need to check in with my mother and let her know I'll be gone for a few days at least. She doesn't need to know who I'm traveling with or exactly what it is we're doing, but I don't want her sending out search parties unnecessarily." It was forgivable to look at Victor again. Valid reason, this was not mooning. Dammit. "Ahem. Is there anything in particular you can think of that we'll need besides the old map of the mines?" The map wouldn't be very accurate but it would be better than nothing.

Verity smiled. "Well...if you need an alibi..." She clasped her hands behind her back. "I am here under the guise of being an ambassador. You could say that you are simply showing me the wild and raw beauty that is your Raven Islands." A sunny smile offered Raylinn's way. "You are simply doing your royal duty, correct?"
"It isn't really a lie. I would like to see the Islands. Sometime during my stay."

" Much of what I need-" he patted the haversack, " I have. But Raylinn knows where we are going. She'll prepare us." He said not wanting her to go out shopping for supplies and reveal their presence even more blatantly. " Climbing gear?" He asked as he shifted to the right to allow her past to go do what she must.
" Oh, that sounds a lot like my idea!" He said sarcastically as he gave them both a smirk and turned to get into his gear.

" What else would you of went there for?" He said impatiently. " Tea?" He had his Father's head for schemes, somewhere in that skull of his, but unlike Arc he lacked the patience to explain such schemes. They weren't his style. Victor was a soldier. A leader in battle. He was woefully unequipped for matters of the heart, and worse- games of betrothal and entrapment.

The warm smile she shared with Verity turned into something less than friendly for Victor. "It may bear a faint resemblance but our plan is much better," she sniffed. She was a woman, she comforted herself with the fact that she didn't have to make sense to him. "Just don't go off without us."
"My mother might try to push extra guards on us, so we'll play up the whole 'we're strong and independent young women capable of taking care of ourselves' card, alright? She's a sucker for that one. It also helps to point out she was staging a revolution and challenging necromancers to fights to the death at our age. But whatever you do... Do NOT mention your brother being on the Islands. That would be...bad." She shuddered as she collected her cloak.
"We should head out before it gets much later."

" Verity, have fun at court- and signal me when you leave. I'll catch up." he said with a less smart ass expression. He did feel better, seeing her. Between his twin and...uh, Raylinn- he felt as if he were walking in the sun for the first time in a long while.
Still- he had to find the Lethea. If he was really going to stay in any light- he needed to forget. This monster was able to do that. Able to pluck those pesky memories right out.

"If I must, I will press the 'I am an accomplished magic wielder and your men would be put off by my practices' card." Verity grinned helpfully at Raylinn, the pair of them seeming to find the perfect way to gang up on Victor. It was wonderful.
"You had better not leave without us. I'll be very cross if you do. And I'll put myself in danger trying to find you. I'm much safer travelling with you, than trying to find you." She reminded him.
