Lilwen sat within her tent with two books opened in front of her. One, an ancient census that was once shelved within a temple that no longer existed. The other, a mysterious tome gifted to her by none other than the Void King himself. She should have already turned the void book over to someone more educated. More experienced. More important. And she would. Of course. But first... First she had to wrap her mind around a few things. Why had the Void King targeted her that first time? Why had he ravaged her mind, and accidentally? established a connection with the Hive that allowed her to gain valuable intelligence for those who opposed him? Why choose to summon her out of everyone else to his Court? Why had he wanted her to bare witness to that female's corruption? Why call her the Child of the Void? Why give her the tome? Oddly enough, it was not the void book that had captured her gaze. Try as she might, she could not tear her eyes away from the truth ornately scribed on the census' open page. Her father had been conceived while her grandmother was still Goddess of Light. That didn't matter. She didn't want it to matter. She was a learned scholar, a gifted researcher, a powerful mage. Her current interest and area of study was alternate dimensions and the potential harvesting of their available energies. It was logical that she would delve into the mysteries of the Void. She had the necessary information, and the ability to act upon it. Why had Father never told her? No. This had nothing to do with that. It was coincidence. Convenience. What she ought to do was turn the book over and let those she - and the majority of the kingdom, she'd wager - considered "people of import." Trent. Milhin. Hell, any of the Kalibas. The Vargos. The religious temple leaders. Those were the sorts who did the things history never forgot. You are a Vargo. She was a Nickleby. A side player in the land's important events. Supporter of history's heroes. Her name had no place in the annals of time, except perhaps as the scribe who wrote them. That felt like a lie. Finally, her attention shifted to the void book. Your life is never going to be the same.

Raylinn was oblivious to what was happening with the twins. She'd donned practice gear and was out in the training yard...well, close enough to it she still called it that. She'd personally dragged every rock of large enough size she could find around the encampment to make herself a fireproof target area. Well, alright...she'd had a little help. Help that was currently extremely distracted and had been the whole afternoon. "Lilwen!" she snapped, giving her friend a narrowed eye glare. Lilwen tore her eyes away from the storm and gave herself a little shake. "Right. Sorry, Ray. It's just...did you see how close that lightning was?" She could swear there'd been more to that than just Mother Nature. Her hand absently rubbed her chest as she gave the temperamental an apologetic grin. "It's just a storm." Ray waved a hand. "You're supposed to be helping me get this right. If I blow up someone on our side, I hope you know I'm blaming you. Where has your head been today?" "Um." It's more like where her head was last night. And this morning. And hopefully where it would be again sometime soon. Lil cleared her throat and turned her face up to hide the heated flush, and possibly temper it with some cold Autumn rain. "I love storms," she tried. "Plus there's the book puzzle I'm still working on." It was very tempting to call bullshit. Ray knew it didn't have a thing to do with that book. That hadn't been Lilwen's thinking face. In fact, Lilwen's odd behavior was very similar to how she'd felt the first chance she had alone after she and Victor... It was her turn to shake off a train of thought. She wasn't going to call Lil out or tease her because then she'd have to deal with Lil turning the tables, and Ray had no desire to talk about the maybe-kinda-sorta-but-not-exactly-betrothal-thing. "Just tell me if I'm doing this right." It was harder than it should have been to tear her eyes away from where the lightning had struck. As usual, however, she compartmentalized very well, and Ray finally got her full attention. "You have to stop treating your fire as if it's an arrow shot from a bow. Magic isn't moved by physics. It's moved by will. Close your eyes, you don't need to see what you want to hit as long as you hold the image securely in your head." Ray dubiously complied, closing her eyes. "Fine. But if I ash you, woman, I'm kicking dirt over the pile and pretending I haven't seen you all day." Lilwen smirked while it was safe to do so and immediately shielded herself...just in case. "Don't worry. You can't hurt me." Ray's eye twitched and Lil summoned patience as she consoled her friend. "Fine, fine, you're a deadly woman and I'm in awe of your power," she said dryly. "Now who isn't focusing? Reach down into yourself and feel your Source." She felt the waver of energies as Ray tapped into her magic. "Good. Picture the target. The distance between you and it, the individual stone you want to strike in the pillar..." She went on in that soft, soothing tone, taking Ray through the process of measuring how much magic to draw and when to release it. Lil found it interesting that in the dim light granted by the storm, she could visually see an amber glow in the veins beneath Raylinn's skin as Ray lifted a hand. A little tidbit she kept to herself, for now. "Very good, Raylinn...now...GO!" A moderately sized fireball shot from Ray's palm, speeding across the distance and overshooting the middle stone by a foot. "Gods dammit stupid magic never doing what I fu----ng want! Son of a..." Lil merely arched a brow, somewhat impressed at Ray's colorful creativity as the verbal tirade continued. When Ray stopped to suck in a breath, Lil dryly intoned, "I've never heard the phrase 'milkmaid's hand soap' used quite like that before. Are you done?" It just happened that Lilwen shifted her staff, the Void infused crystal mounted on it momentarily blocking part of her view of Raylinn. The amber glow beneath Ray's skin hadn't faded after the fireball was thrown. It had grown brighter in correlation to Ray's rising anger. The crystal was semi-transparent, granting a green cast to everything viewed through it...except that glow. It should have been faded, or appeared a brighter shade of green... It glowed a brilliant, almost painfully bright blue-white. Immediately, her mind latched onto the oddity. While the gears turned, she almost absently inquired, "Do you have to use your hands to manipulate your magic?" Ray blinked over at Lilwen. Huh. Now that was Lil's thinking face. "I...don't know. I always have," she shrugged. "Have you ever tried to just spark it into life with your will?" Ray gave her a blank look. "...what?" Lil sighed, and then rephrased. "Like...look at a dry leaf and make it burst into flames?" "Oh. No. Is that even possible?" "Of course. Given where you grew up, though, I can understand why you never thou---- Oh!!!" She blinked, the mental machine she'd been blessed with finally finishing the thought. She considered Raylinn, canting her head. "Why are you looking at me like that? Stop. It's weird." "Your father once served Sinead as Guardian of Light." Ray stared at Lilwen. "What's that got to do with the price of wine in Tyran?" Lilwen ignored the odd Island turn of phrase. That initial thought sparked a rapid series of connect the dots. Theories were born, hypotheses posed, information processed, considered, and tied together in new ways while the mage stood there, blankly staring through her friend. "Lil?" Ray frowned. Was Lilwen even blinking? "Hey... Lilwen?" Still nothing. Ray walked over to Lilwen and waved a hand in front of her face. Lilwen did blink, which was a relief, and a hand batted away her waving one. But she still didn't say anything. "Lilwen? You know he was Guardian for like...a minute, right? He pretty much sucked at the job." "It's not that..." Oh hey. Words. Now she was getting somewhere. Ray squinted, as if that would help her follow the impossible maze of Lilwen's brain. "Then what is it? You can't blurt something like that out of the blue and give me nothing. It's rude." "I'll...explain later." Lil spun around and jogged off. She needed that book. "Lilwen!!" "Sorry!" Lil called over her shoulder. "I'll explain, I promise!"

Super Kaliba Brothers 2Today at 8:24 PM Trent was amused. Pleased even. All the criticism the Temple of Light suffered, all the accusations- and it was obvious that Sinead while subtle, was just as effective as her counterpart. More so, as chaos and kidnapping had not accompanied her countermeasures.
For now, he could wait out the tests of the spear without considering the weapon to be the end all of the conflict. So he remained in the Spire reviewing reports and his responsibilities now that Arc had left New Arisalon for the Capital. Sensing an approach to the Spire- thanks to the very tower itself he bid it open every pathway to him, his hope that his apprentice soon join him. He was sitting in an office that boasted a grand window, the view of the great city beneath them one that no doubt inspired some level of Trent's occasional aloofness.
Lilwen NicklebyToday at 8:37 PM Lilwen seemingly stepped out of thin air into the Spire, practice and skill making it so that her gate never faltered. One step had been taken outside her tent, the next inside the Spire. Excited, arms clutching tomes to her chest and her staff sheathed and strapped to her back, she hurried towards Trent's office. Hands full, she awkwardly used her elbow to coax open the door without bothering to knock. If Trent didn't wish to be disturbed, nothing she or anyone else did would get the thing to open.
As soon as the door opened enough for her to set eyes on Trent her entire face lit up. "I have ideas," she gushed, her giddy excitement written plainly on her face. Last night had been everything she'd ever hoped for - and then some. Instead of inducing self-consciousness or awkwardness, or raising any kind of barrier, it had destroyed them. She'd been set free.
Lilwen toe-dragged a chair close to Trent's desk and sat down. The books were lined up in the available space on her side. "I'm sure you're busy but when the idea - or ideas really - hit me, I knew I had to see you." Already she was cracking open binders and flipping to the corresponding pages in each book.
Super Kaliba Brothers 2Today at 8:42 PM " Don't waste time, little bird." he said affectionately, half to her tendency to flutter, half to her penchant for flight. He gave her a smile that didn't take long to form, amusement already closs at hand. He titled his head forward to Lilwen and gestured for her to continue. " Present your ideas. "
Knowing that Sinead was at work, and the state of the Twins gave him some certainty about the current threats. They would still work yes, but now this was an adventure instead of a race against time. He'd treat it all with professionalism and a clinical perspective, but now he could afford to be a little less rgid about it all.
" I'm listening." he assured her as he closed the report in front of him and leaned back in his chair.
Lilwen NicklebyToday at 8:53 PM The nickname momentarily widened her smile. Phaen still called her Little Wren. "Alright, so... I was helping Raylinn with her magic, she's no focus at all, and by sheer happenstance I caught a glimpse of her through the crystal I'd infused with Void energy. I'd already noticed before that when Ray's magic runs high, amber veins glow under her skin. Almost like her blood itself is infused with it. My crystals tend to turn green, so when I saw Ray through them, that amber glow should have been tempered, dimmed," she waved a hand, Trent did not need unnecessary explanation. "That veining was a bright, bright white."
She tapped a forefinger to the open page of the first book. Again, Trent likely didn't need the supporting evidence, but she was still his student, and knew better than to dare a presentation without it. "That's when it all...sparked in my head. Her father served Sinead as a Guardian. There are records of him showing symptoms of angelic possession. I think that whole family has it wrong and Raylinn's magic doesn't come from her mother...but her father. He was Light touched."
Super Kaliba Brothers 2Today at 8:57 PM " Raelle had no talent for the art when she was discovered as I've come to know. I was quite..." he chuckled at the thought of it. " Distracted and young...When the family appeared. But as for what you say..." He nodded. The idea was a sound hypothetical. " It would also explain the 'blood' component. Her physical manifestations are inconsistent with general magic mutagenics. The body seldom has the ability to regulate temperatures once they are raised." He said almost with a sound of pity.
" SInead's blessing to Cassiel Ravencourt has historical evidence, while the man had no real gifts- it is worth noting that the light does not often reveal itself in ways consistent or even apparent. A warning you should take to heart, considering your parentage. "
Lilwen NicklebyToday at 9:10 PM Lilwen's nose crinkled. "Yes, I know. And we are all very aware of my grandmother's manipulations while goddess. Before I noticed Ray's odd glow, there was this storm, and lightning struck nearby. It all connected, though... Victor fished Ray out of the sea the same night the Garden blew up, do you remember? He only saw her because of a storm. Me, Shelzi's granddaughter, bonded a Thunderbird - we rode the lightning for that part of the book's prophecy. I'm not sure why I'd forgotten all that. Anyway..." That portion of her thought tornado wasn't important for the matter at hand.
Lilwen refocused. "If the origins of Ray's magic are Light sourced, then the Void recognizes that. It reveals the god energies. It's...a codex, of sorts. I used one of my crystals on the void book, Trent. And the symbols started to solidify. I think... I think I just need to find a purer crystal, so the Void energy isn't tainted. And then I should be able to decipher the book."
Lilwen NicklebyToday at 9:13 PM Lilwen drew her staff and opened the void book, holding the crystal above the odd symbols on the first page. Trent should be able to see for himself, he'd spent enough time working with the Void that its alien frequencies shouldn't interfere with his ability to at least make out the first signs of symbol alignment. It was like a lens that only needs brought into proper focus.
Super Kaliba Brothers 2Today at 9:17 PM " And before all that....My Father cursed the land with a storm that lasted nearly a month." he said not in memory of the event, as he was not yet born, but in recollection of the history. Storms had been portents in cultures long ago, the theme was not lost on him, but as he considered the issue of the crystal- he nodded enthusiastically. Now was not a good time to speak on the countermeasures to the Void- for all that it was, it was a force requiring a diametric opposite.
"Clever." he said in evident approval. "Clever girl." He added as he put his hands together, steepling them in thought. " Such a crystaline structure could be grown. Fabricated. We'll need measurements, but it can be done. Take the lab downstairs where I've cut and enchanted the gems. I'll make sure the materials are ready. It should take no long period of time to create this crystal lens. Good job, Lilwen. Very astute." Lilwen NicklebyToday at 9:27 PM Lilwen lit up like a star. Her theories were validated, and Trent was proud. Hopefully Milhin would be, too, when she heard about it. As expected, he hadn't needed the physical evidence she'd brought along. She started collecting the books. "Thank you! I needed to know if you thought all of that valid or not. Eventually, I'll explore the possible reasons my grandmother thought she should bring all of us together. Our individual strands of the Web are clearly connected, you can see that with how things have played out in the present."
She stood up, resheathed her staff and clutched the books against her chest. She could not stop smiling. "Thank you for letting me use your lab. I'm going to work on it straight away."
Super Kaliba Brothers 2Today at 9:30 PM Fabrication of magical artifice had always been a key strength. "I'll come along. You might need the aid." he said and left the reports he was reviewing be. They could wait.
This only reinforced the idea, he needed to pay a visit to Reign and Shelzi sooner rather than later.

Armed with the purest crafted crystal Trent and his equipment could create, Lilwen sat down and began translating. It wasn't easy, for a number of reasons. The first being the odd phrasing and archaic lettering. Whoever had written the book had loved their own narration, adding unnecessary, flowery paragraphs with no care for word efficiency or clarity.
She had a headache after an hour.
It turned into a migraine after three.
Hour four, she got to the second, more personal reason translation was difficult.
Hour six, and Lilwen was scribing a much simpler summary of her findings that would be sent out via raven to both temples and the governing bodies of the land:
The Void's primary properties are to consume and corrupt. Anyone who attempts to utilize this new, alien energy will be corrupted by it, even using precautionary methods such as a crystal filter cannot protect the individual indefinitely. Weapons forged by the gods, however, are immune to this corruption. Void magic manifests in a different way from what we are used to in Tyran - it grants a special, unique ability to each user, but the nature of that magical ability is always destructive.
The book refers to prime deities such as Dawnstar, the Void King, and possibly unknown others still, are known as Starlights. Those lesser deities (Tyr and Sinead, for example) hosting deity entities are known as Star Children. The universe itself enforces a certain balance, creating an opposing negative force for every positive one. (The use of "positive" and "negative" here should not be affiliated with moral ideals such as "good" and "evil.")
The Void King is almost fully corrupted by his own poisonous energy. His long absence from Dawnstar's balancing energy has pushed him to a point of eternal obliteration. It is Dawnstar that he seeks. The lesser gods (Tyr and Sinead) are not direct targets, although in my personal opinion I would suggest both temples find what is left of Dawnstar's essence before the Void King does, and protect it at all costs.
It also bears noting that combining any form of Dawnstar's energy with that of the Void would be EXTREMELY dangerous, even cataclysmic.
The report for Trent Kaliba had an added, personal note at the bottom:
Those with the ability and skill to channel Void energy are referred to as "Children of the Void." My own curiosity and magical talents led me to unwittingly earning this moniker. As you can gather from the above, further use of Void energy would be doubly dangerous for me, considering my parentage. If I had not instinctively shielded the channel for Light within myself, I would not be here to write this now.
After taking necessary precautions, however, I have continued my experimentation and discovered that for myself, Void magic manifests very similar to a necromancer's Life Drain. Sadly, I must induce physical contact with the target in order to absorb its life energy, but the power gained increases exponentially the longer contact is contained, ending only when the object is reduced to dust.

It was only a few days before a second report followed the first. Further studies of the Void Grimoire have revealed a list of creatures, not unlike the demon list commonly found in Sorcerer Grimoires. I would advice all to review the list, and take necessary precautions in case such creatures make an appearance on the battlefield.
The following is a direct translation from the Grimoire, with personal notes in parenthesis. The author of this book remains unknown at the time.
Void Caller - A Void creature much like a wraith that carries a lantern capable of bridging the worlds of the living and the dead.
Void God - (a.k.a. Void King) A deity stripped of its Light and infested with the power of the Void.
Void Lords - Powerful Void creatures encased in armored plate and capable of battle for extended lengths of time.
The Void Lords are evil entities composed of pure shadow energy. These beings are cruel and merciless beyond most mortal's comprehension. Driven by insatiable hunger, the Void Lords seek to devour all matter and energy in the physical universe. In their natural state, the void lords exist outside reality. Only the most powerful of these entities can manifest in the physical universe, and only for limited amounts of time. To maintain their presence in reality, the Void Lords must consume untold amounts of matter and energy.
(The great detail provided on Void Lords suggests these are common tools used in Void invasions. We will likely see them employed very soon.) Void Revenants - A race of parasitic Void creatures that tear holes through the planes of reality, consuming and absorbing the energies and beings within. There is one known occurrence of a Void Revenant being fed overwhelming amounts of power - its name is never spoken. (This seems to suggest that it is possible to "overfeed" a V. Revenant to the point of death, and that true names of these creatures hold power, much as it does to summoned demons. These hypotheses are, however, untested.)
Rumor has it that some beasts that were touched by the Void exist in a space between this world and the next.
The Void can consume life or meld with it, but the latter often has unperceived consequences.
The following two classes border the Void, but do not quite dip into it:
Dreadlord Class Demons - These demons use some basic Void abilities, but never enough to be truly effected by it permanently.
Warlocks - These summon powerful demons (most refer to those with this skill as "Sorcerers," I have not been able to verify if these Warlocks are of the Void, or of a different plane that serves the Void King. It is also my opinion that it was this connection to demons that allowed the Void King to conquer the God Tyr.)
That is the list I have been able to translate so far. Another matter that has come to light, is a process referred to as "The Darkstar." It appears to be the final weapon where in an entire, living planet is drawn into the Void for it to consume, leaving the planet void of life. There must be a reason, some terrible consequence or complicated ritual, that makes this process a "plan B" instead of a primary weapon.
I will continue my research and keep you all updated on the results.
