A piece of the Web, reduced, concentrated, renamed the Quintessence, and currently in untrustworthy hands. Trent had given Lilwen a mission, and she was determined to succeed. There were three people in Tyran left with intimate ties to the Web. It stood to reason this was where to begin.
She didn't need to be told how stupid it would be for anyone to allow Shelzi near anything that had to do with the Web. She was also aware how limited Reign's powers had become. That left one remaining person, and she was only ten years old.
First, she had to return to the scene of the crime.
That's how Lilwen found herself standing less than half a day's ride from the crumbling Temple of Magic ruins. It was as close as she'd allowed Phaen to bring her, insisting the large thunderbird leave her at the edge of a dirt road. From here, she'd have to travel through dense forest to reach her destination, leaving herself vulnerable to springing any traps the foresighted thief may have laid in waiting. It would have been difficult to ensure any trap laid near the road would not have been sprung by any passing traveler, but from here she needed...

Poof.
The young redhead dusted residue from her shoulder and gave her niece - snicker - an irritated look. "I hate it when you do this."
"Do what?" Lilwen asked, confused.
Grace sighed. Sometimes she forgot others didn't have the same Web memories she did. It was super annoying. "Let's get this over with. I'm hungry and Grandma Rosewyn is going to pull cookies out of the oven in ten minutes."
"You already know what I'm going to ask."
"Yup."
Her niece - heh, that will never not be funny - sighed and raked a hand through her hair. "Why don't you save us both some time, then."
Grace grinned big. "I was hoping you'd say that." Brief pause. Then, "I can't take you where the Quintessence is." Wait for it...
"Dammit!"
And there was the foot stomp. She snickered. Lilwen wasn't as funny as Raylinn was when she got mad, but it was close. Now ask me why...
"Why not?"
"Simple. 'Cause it's not part of the Web anymore."
"...what?"
"Ugg," Grace groaned, rolling her eyes. "You and your questions. There are lots of reasons." Six hundred and ninety-three of them, to be exact. "It's hard to explain." She quickly held up a hand to stop Lil before she asked yet another question. There was only one quick way out of this and she wanted the cookies while they were still warm from the oven.
"Imagine the Web as an ocean. The Quintessence as a spyglass. You can track things in an ocean, they leave ripples, waves, scents," she waved an et cetera. "A spyglass lets you see the ocean, but only a small part. It lets you see ripples, and waves, but your spying doesn't leave a trace. AND," she added, heading off another Curious Lilwen interruption, "I can't take you where the Quintessence is now. I don't know. There's too many possibilities."
She grinned at Lilwen's crestfallen expression. "But I can take you to the last place it was."
