In the town of Belgrad, Mount Ysmir cast a shadow that swallowed the town each day around dusk, but the scenic surroundings still pleased the residents. It was a pastoral setting, long lodge houses, and longships used by the northern clans even after New Arisalon expanded influence. Belgrad was a place of significance for the men of the North. This was where the demon host was finally defeated- and it was a place that Victor Kaliba- a veteran of that war had never hoped to return to.
The Tall Timbers, wooden pillars carved with names of the fallen lined the last quarter mile into the town, a town not called a city- if only because of rural spread out nature. Belgrad was a large place, essentially several villages somehow built just out of bow shot of each other. It was once a place of clan hostility, as descendants of the same mighty raiders found less in common with each other, and more reasons to kill each other.
As Victor walked along that road, he couldn’t help but remember far too many of the names engraved and burned into the wood. He remembered not just the names, but the people. Their laughs. Their cries. Their smiles. The many conversions in which they all promised each other they’d make it home.
He had come to realize, there was no truth in war. It made liars of them all.

Before making the trip up here, riding on lightning- Victor had finally presented himself to the God of Light- for all the good it did him. He could feel it, the unnatural sway of the will. The sickly sweet smell of death and rot not far from the Tall Timbers.
The Clans of Belgrad usually burned their dead. But there just hadn't been the time since the horrors emerged from the deep, swirling waters below known to devour all hope of return.
The rocky shores of Belgrad's beach, far below the village's place half way up the mountain- held lines and posts where longships were never tied, where skilled sailors went several miles out of the way to dock in calmer water.
Today, the warning lights were hard to see in the mist and fog, unseasonably strong. As he continued up the path and dusk fell- the rain did the same. A storm not of his making- and a rain that held a bitter chill to the flesh and bone.

For a moment, his missed his witch. Amidst the cloying miasma, she was who you wanted- someone who knew just how the world could be. Kerrigan. But the world thought better than to give him friends for situations such as this. Much better. No smoke. No fire ahead. And when he made it to Belgrad, shuttered windows, and little more than peeks of candlelight greeted him.
Even the stars, seemed to provide pale baleful illumination amidst the well worn paths through town that lead to the holy spot of the clan- a solitary path of cut rock to the approach to the summit.
Somewhere in the darkness, steel checked a scabbard, and movement could be heard.

Three lads, none of them beyond twenty came out from a long house, two with broad sword and shield, and one with a battle axe hefted high. "Victor!" One bellowed.
" You picked a fine time, Captain." The axe man said. " We've had more of those blasted spawn show up form the deep. Usually come up at night- never cross the threshold like the magi said- but oy- do they try."
The Three Warriors, were good lads. Having survived as those uncorrupted by Xanthorg, they had fought bravely- as brave (or braver) than any legionaire.
" How many fighting men have survived?" Victor asked.
Silence filled the space for a moment. " Ten. Most went off to help those who would run. Half of them made it- the other half you smelt on the way in."
" Fighting fit are in those three houses. But honestly- we doubt we've be any good for you- storm is kicking up. Rolling in fast. "

As luck would have it, despite that the world did not answer the call of Victor's heart for Kerrigan, it provided him with someone else. Not witch, but a powerful user of magic nonetheless. From the sky, a column of silvery light as gentle and pale as the moon beamed a hole momentarily through the miasma. The light touched the ground just outside of the village, though anyone half paying attention would notice the light against the darkness. Into view shimmered a young woman clad in blue mithril weave, clutching a bladed staff in one hand and in the other, an amulet bearing a platinum pendant of a crescent moon. Verity had found more than Amber in Reign's secret hoard of magical items.
Releasing the pendant, it swung to rest against her breast. The young woman vibrated with a rage that could barely be contained, and it showed in the hard set of blue eyes that were typically so bright and cheerful.

Victor wanted to curse. When he heard of Moira's likely passing- he knew he could resist the pull no longer. But of course, his twin would be here.
Truth be told, what was a curse turned into gratitude. Something felt off. Kieran was not supposed to be able to affect this place as it was affected. This storm...it was something altogether sinister. And the spawn? One of the few dead, he witnessed- far more than the warriors here could've ever handled.
" Truth be told, we were hoping when we found you- that you'd lead us off for a good retreat..... the other seven of us are terrified. No one in the village could sleep a wink for the last couple of days before the attack. Milk curdled. Eggs went bad. All the produce... like weeks had passed." Said Karl- one of the men white knuckle gripping his broadsword.

The soft soles of Verity's boots scuffed against the rock and dirt beneath her feet as she tread the path into the village. She inhaled deeply, trying to keep the pounding of her heart from drowning out all other sound in her ears.
Verity had never been here before, though she knew of this location well. Belgrad was her twin brother's nightmare. And yet he was here all the same. The sound of voices flitted on the air as she approached, and each word hammered resolve into her heart.
It had been far too long since she had seen the brother with whom she'd shared a womb. They had communicated via magical means, but that could never compare to being in each other's presence. But despite her desire to rush to her brother and cast her arms around his shoulders in joy, the sorrow in her heart just...couldn't bring her to do it.

Turning attention back towards the edge of town, Victor nodded absently until locking eyes on his sister and summoning a smile.
" You really are done, staying home aren't you?"
He turned to Karl and gave him a grin, nodding now with purpose. extraction was a good idea- but it would take time. They were a lot of them to get down the mountain.
" We will see what we can do--"
That was when he heard it, over the incessant pouring of the rain.
A screech that turned into a roar, and a dim violet illumination just blurred by cloud, rain, and wind.
" DUULO SVA ANNYO!" Boomed in draconic, the voice echoing as powerful as a roar, and as sinister as a screech.
The Draconic was clear. "Free at last."

She couldn't help but crack her own bittersweet smile in response to her twin's teasing. It was as if they had never been separated. But oh, how she'd missed him. "I have been for some time now, brother."
Falling silent she had turned her attention to the conversation her brother had started to continue with Karl, the one she had interrupted.
The screech froze her heart, caused her eyes to widen. The twins, they knew the language of the dragons - had been taught from a young age.
The young woman spun abruptly, a single murmur setting off her contingencies which shimmered and flickered over her frame in rapid succession in response to the trigger word. Verity's mouth slowly fell open.

Victor did not mouth such contingencies. " Run, lads- to the well! " The well which ran into the cistern- it was carved near bedrock- and it'd be the only safe place from the strafing run of Imrik. The dragon flew as nimble as any creature, the standard bearer in many of a battle in the previous ages. Imrik had been bound to Arc in some way, but to see him wheeling in the sky and swooping low- the black scales no longer lustrous in the moonlight but black as death-
It brought blood to run cold, the dragonfear of this incredible creature causing knees to turn to jelly as the three warriors did as instructed, only one able to keep to task well. But those warriors were no longer the issue, as Victor shoved his sister behind a stone cottage, and lifted his shield to angle it above their heads and towards the dragon's flying assault.
When this took place, it was sudden- veteran responses that weren't drilled, but part of Victor's experience. The breath of the dragon was not hot- but crackling entropy- violet in color that turned wood to ash and stone to dust- the ravage of years and decay proved to be worse than flame- the surge of necromantic energy and arcane force more than enough to turn their cover to little more than rubble- only half of the once mighty wall standing- and standing only because Victor's shield and body held it upright.
Panic set in among the surviving lads, and violet fire- burned on the ground and amidst the shattered wood structures. With but one pass, Imrik made the village hell.
" Sister." Victor said through gritted teeth as their shelter was little more than obstacle. "The approach to the summit has high stone to shield us- we have to make a run for it. Did you catch the direction? It's straight ahead and to the left."

"Imrik!" Verity cried, before being shoved behind the cottage, knowing to stay glued to Victor as tightly as possible beneath that shield. Verity trembled, eyes scrunching tightly as she gulped in large breaths of air. It was as if Victor exuded an aura that prevented her from turning and fleeing from the dragon in panic. Immediately her mind turned over the theory of dragonfear and strategies known for attempting to combat it. It was just enough to keep her from scrambling with the others.
Dragging a hand over her face, she regarded the ruined wall in front of them with disbelief and then turned her head at the sound of Victor's voice, focusing on him like an anchor. She nodded quickly. "Yes." Her lungs heaved. "I'm ready when you are."

" Whatever you do- don't stop to cast- and follow me." He said before bursting out from the rubble it scattering in all directions. The Knight Captain for a moment, looked valiant- something her big brother seldom looked like. War for all it's flaws, for it's inherrent darkness- was what he had been born for. The fire around him raged, but still in his armor he moved as if wearing little more than a pair of pants.
Following him however was a challenge- one she was up to. Mantling over a half shredded wall, leaping over fallen beams- he didn't stay in a straight line, but was working opposite to Imrik's flight path- even though he couldn't see the dragon in the storm. "Watch it!" He warned as they slid down into trench that was certainly not -glorious- as grey water and other refuse was washed along the bed of the makeshift 'sewer' that irrigated a small village garden.
" Stay down!" Victor shouted, moving still rapidly but in a little more than a crouch, his shield held to their right- Imrik wasn't seen, but here- was where he could make his attack- the dragon's mighty breath bearing down just above the waste trench.
The violet gleam was blinding, necrotic energy sapping strength just by proximity- thought still they pressed.

Don't stop to cast. No taking pot shots or casting defense. Got it. For a moment she kicked herself mentally for not having the presence of mind to cast Protection from Energy while Victor was shielding them from the dragon's breath weapon. But dragonfear was a bitch.
Verity was thankful that she had been training physically in Silem as seriously as she had been training mentally. Before her training in Silem she never would have been able to keep up with Victor in this mad dash. Surely she would have tripped, or been caught up by one of the fallen beams. But though her lungs burned and her muscles ached, she sprinted behind Victor, keeping as close as she possibly could. Whereas Victor was large enough that he had to leap over some of the obstacles, Verity was small enough that she could nimbly roll beneath them and continue running.
They slid down into the trench and Verity was too concerned with avoiding the dragon to worry much about the floating refuse that lingered in the water. The stench was cloying and awful, but being caught in that breath weapon would be even worse.
She hunkered down, scrambling beside her twin as the breath weapon blasted over their heads and she felt fatigue wash over her. Gritting her teeth, Verity found strength in that she was fighting to survive with her twin. Truly they had never struggled side by side like this before. And if it hadn't been so terrifying...she might just have been ecstatic.

" What are you here for!?" Victor asked, it was sudden- and it seemed that he'd wait just long enough to get an answer, even though he was already moving, all be it slower, as Imrik compensated in vain. The dash from the trench to the approach was an easy one, and no gout of necrotic fire could reach them for now as they moved through the approach. If she didn't get up with him, he yanked her along- Victor taking little time to pamper and baby the child the whole family had spent so much time doing.
A little late, he came to understand what Verity wanted. A shame it came like this.
" Up this mountain- with Imrik, it could be a one way trip. " His voice was a little softer, when they finally had some shelter. Victor for a moment, took a knee- not to rest, but to do something else as he brought a ring of white gold to his finger and whispered something against the metal band.

"I came here to get you to help me kill Kieran!" Verity answered, eyes flitting about rapidly, the memory of her reason for coming here steadying her voice and steeling her nerves. Yes, get mad again, Verity. Angry Verity counteracts afraid Verity. "He killed Moira. I know he did. And the stupid Trifecta can't do anything about it. I can. But I can't do it alone." He didn't need to pull her along. The moment he was on his feet, so was she. "But I wasn't expecting Imrik!"
Finally under the shelter, she could take a moment to catch her breath. She doubled over, placing her hands on her knees, heaving several deep breaths of air. Enough for her to cast a spell. Protection from Energy upon them both would not make them completely immune to Imrik's breath weapon, but would lessen the chance that they would be rendered completely destroyed if they were somehow glanced by it. A brief shimmer passed over them both as the spell went into effect.
Verity frowned. "Could be. Less likely if there's two of us." Her head canted. "What are you doing?" She asked.

Victor nodded as she explained, agreeing. But it was how the answered that encouraged him to accept it. She needed to be here, same as him.
In the distance, a celestial griffon screeched defiantly as it flew through the storm. It was not Solarion's first time facing down death.
" Stay sharp, Sis." He said as he stood up. " He's not like us anymore, and he certainly isn't our nephew." Victor took a long steadying breath, and proceeded up the approach. The winding ascent was one taken with quick steps, more than enough to exhaust a person, including him... but the will didn't allow that. Not tonight.
Soon the summit, a plateau of a place, was reached- and the standing stones long ago put there by druids of the North Men were joined by a man who stood alone- one druid's broken body at his feet. The man was broad, tall- imposing not unlike Victor. His hair was stark white, wild amidst the wind- but held out of his face. His black horns breached past his hair- wet and gleaming.
" Uncle Victor. Aunt Verity. It's an odd night for a hike up here." His voice could be heard past the storm. Turning away from the standing stones, Kieran faced them as they made it to the peak.
" I take it you've heard about Moira's trespass? " Next to Kieran there looked to be a kind of wound in the mountain- a cracked fissure in which a crimson glow pulsed deep within.

She exhaled a deep breath as she heard the screeching griffon in the distance. "Brave Solarion." She said almost reverently. "Griffons are marvelous."
Verity cast a sideways glance at her brother as they began to ascent the mountain. "As much as I don't like to say it, Victor, I don't think he was ever like us." She murmured, using her staff like a walking stick to help her navigate the incline. For a few moments silence stretched between them and despite the harrowing experience there was part of Verity that was truly happy in that moment, climbing that mountain with her twin.
Beside Victor, Verity came to a stop once they reached the summit and her eyes narrowed as they came to rest upon Kieran. "Isn't it?" She retorted, implying the same statement applied to him.
Mention of Moira, however caused her fists to clench. "And you killed her!" Verity shouted. "You didn't have to do that! She was our friend!" Her lips pursed angrily. "Whatever games you're playing at, Kieran. They stop now." She vowed, glancing towards Victor. She hoped they were on the same page. Attack hard and fast. Don't give Kieran time to react.
Pummel the bastard into the ground.
Magic Missile. It was an easy enough spell to cast, but managed several projectiles sent simultaneously to strike its target. Perhaps this would give Victor time to close the distance with their nephew.

Victor didn't say a word. Instead he sprinted forward, crossing the space between he and the man who had began to plunge the world into deeper darkness. The glowing orbs of light streaked around him and of course beat him to the punch, just as a violet screen of force erupted into existence. It signed to Victor that he needed to put his weight behind his strike.
The reactive spell hadn't barely taken a gesture, as Kieran lifted his left hand with an errant motion. The spell Shield made the magic missiles entirely ineffective, it's natural counter. But it did mean he could not so easily strike down Victor's assault. Normally he could've immolated a fool who struck him... Instead Kieran had to trust in his armor and abjurations- as Victor charged, thrusting his blade forward.
Kieran's shadow seemed to encase him in a field of darkness that muffled the energy of Victor's forward momentum- but it was the shield's remnant energy that kept the blow from striking true, little more than a graze and lifted sparks from his armor.
The Armor. It was familiar. Arc's armor as Guardian of Evil. Kieran had a sense of poetry- no doubt.
Opening salvo survived, Kieran went on the offensive- knowing that a prolonged fight with Victor while Verity assailed him with magic, wasn't wise. His right hand drew his sword, as his left raised with a flourish and violent, sudden force exploded from his open palm. The force held a sound- a deafening bass that threatened to rupture eardrums.
Victor raised his shield and braced, but still lost nearly ten yards of ground from where he'd came- only Victor's prodigous strength kept him from being launched off the mountain fully- his legs leaving narrow ruts in the ground.

It was all Verity had hoped for. She knew her role in a melee battle. She had been training for it for some time. Her role was primarily support and to stay out of the way of the fighters, because she could not hope to be able to endure even half the damage Victor could. However, if she could get in a good strike here and there and so some damage, that was even better.
As Victor met Kieran with his blade, she noted how easily that armour deflected Victor's sword despite her twin's preternatural strength. She knew Kieran's shield spell wasn't likely to last, but she couldn't say for certain what other spells Kieran had already cast before Victor and Verity had arrived at the summit. Any chance she could give Victor of making headway against that armour would help them in the long run.
It was perhaps surprising that Verity did not go for the offensive spell. But truly, she believed this was the more intelligent tactic at this early stage in the battle. With Victor now pressing him, it would be difficult for him to recast any spells he had protecting him. And so Verity's fingers formed the gestures and traced the runes in the air, calling upon the arcane energies that would dispel magic on Kieran's person.

Kieran spotted the abjuration as he moved to compensate- he wouldn't be able to flick his uncle away after all. Under duress from the dispel magic, he once more reacted on the defensive with a counter spell. It was shrewd to counter a dispelling attempt- but took more mana than he would've liked. That said- protecting himself was what the magic was for...
He crashed into Victor before the man could fully get stable from the powerful attack, but didn't expect that Victor had that scouted. Distracted from the dispel magic, and Verity in general,- Kieran's attack was flawed- a slash of his sword low at the exposed leg on Victor's sword side. Hard for the man to defend- and he didn't.
The Blade cut deep, despite the plate- as the swirling darkness around the white blade seemed to naturally cling to the wound. The weapon was vile, no means of protection held for too long. Victor felt his strength diminish in the leg, and a numbness spread even to the bone- but that didn't stop Victor from fighting back.
Forcing himself to angle to the left he blocked Kieran's advance, as he was already trying to move past Victor and get to Verity. He drew a long slice across Kieran's momentarily exposed midsection, barely knicking him beyond the armor- while pivoting to follow up with his shield- slamming the rim in against the back of his gorget- sending the demigod stumbling forward with a righteous clang. The impact was strong, and aimed to keep the war wizard from speaking, a trick taught to him by his Big Sister.

Verity grimaced as Victor was struck, concern etched on her face as the blade bit deep into her twin's leg. Dammit. She was torn between offense or sustainability for her next spell. Kieran had countered her spells and while it was distracting him somewhat from Victor, it wasn't allowing Verity to make any headway.
Thankfully her twin intercepted Kieran's attempt to get past him to the spellcaster. Verity had taken a step back and raised her staff in front of her defensively, but thankfully Kieran was not coming for her yet.
Victor's trick wasn't lost on Verity, however, and she decided to make it permanent. She weighed the balance between one damage inducing spell versus casting silence now and being able to cast uninhibited by his attempts to counterspell. Victor would be unaffected as he didn't need to speak in order to swing his sword.
The spell dropped on her nephew. Verity looked forward to casting her next spell without impediment.

Silence happened in a zone in which sound was suppressed. It didn't move, but he did. Weaving backward in his steps and minding his defense, he was able to disengage from Victor due to Victor's injured leg, and make the short trip out of the sphere of silence. The counterspell did what it needed to do- it bought him time. Let Verity adapt her tactics to what would be expected. His actions had already got them to break their plan. Silence was out of his wheel house- he was no cleric, nor naturalist. He had more direct ways of stopping magic.
With Victor on his heels, he closed the distance and brought down a vicious blow in a broad arc, the entropy incasing his blade violently crackling in the air. Kieran's strike was practiced, and the angle was tight enough to make parrying it difficult.
Victor however was still in pursuit, not as fast as Kieran now, but able to flank with his sister, and hammer low at Kieran's legs with his shield, and thrust his blade towards the man's kidneys. Kieran had it scouted, pivoting on one leg away from the shield and in his spin avoiding the thrust.
Suddenly it became evident. Kieran seemingly knew how each of them would fight before they acted. Divination. Powerful divination. Victor had fought this before.... Foresight.

Fear welled and gripped at her heart as Kieran stepped past Victor and left the sphere of silence she'd brought down on him. Taking several steps backwards, her eyes widened and the colour drained from her face, though she did not scream. She was no match for his sword and his strength.
Victor gave chase, but with his wounded leg he wasn't fast enough to prevent the blow that descended on his twin sister. She raised her staff with as much strength as she could possibly muster and prayed. Prayed that her mithril weave and spell contingencies would prevent her from being killed with one blow.
The sword crashed into her staff, the force cleaving it in two and knocking Verity back and down to the ground. As she fell, she felt the bite of the blade sink into the mithril and open a large deep gash in her flesh that began to bleed profusely, spilling over her and onto the ground. Were it not for the armour and spells cast upon her, including Protection from Energy, she would have been no more with that one blow.

Her body hit the ground, staff falling into pieces beside her. She arched with pain and cried out in agony. Thankfully before Kieran could finish her, Victor drew him off of her. With a whimper of pain and effort, Verity struggled to pull herself onto her side. Panting from the effort, she sucked in gulps of air, trying to pull her mind back to where she needed it to be.
She had trained for this. To master pain and distraction and cast. It had been a huge part of her training at Silem, something she had devoted so much time to. Blinking back a wave of darkness that wanted to wash over her, Verity closed her eyes tightly. Victor was still fighting. They needed to win. Moira needed to be avenged. Kieran had to be stopped. Verity needed to cast this spell. Her teeth gritted and she raised her hand, speaking words from between bloodied lips. She needed to make this one good.
It might be the only one I've got.
The clouds parted and for a moment the sun's brilliance filled the sky. Hot, burning, searing light welled in the sky at her command. At the crescendo of her spell, her hand dropped, signaling the bolt of holy radiant light to descend with all harsh brutality upon Kieran.

There was no scream on the descent. The storm too loud to hear a splash. Kieran hobbled back from the edge, glanced at his still breathing aunt, before looking to the standing stones. The red glow had died, he no longer needed to spend time here. His skin, a bubbling poping mess, showed it's true putrescence. It would take time to heal these wounds the twins put upon him. His mind slowed to meet the moments of time- as bolt of radiance came his way. Lifting his left palm, another screen of force manifested a shield that with the protective nature of his divinations- gave him just enough to avoid the attack. Rain. Darkness. Mud. All of it seemed to aid him in this moment.
At the very least out of respect... he'd leave one alive. Though he was not so sure he had a choice.
" Those who come for me- court death, Verity. I don't want to spill any more of my family's blood. If he had moved to strike me- it would've just happened faster. I might've killed you instead." And with that, the shadows swallowed him- and even Verity could not see the truth of where he was.

She whimpered, blood loss and heartbreak stealing the strength from her arms. She collapsed in the dirt, weeping, bleeding, until unconsciousness swallowed her in a shadow all of its own.
