It is an unwritten rule of rp etiquette that unless you have been specifically invited to join a thread, or it explicitly says (open) on the title...you ask before you join.
Its just courtesy because you don't know if those involved have something already planned and your inserting yourself without permission might throw a wrench in the plan.
There could be a lot of reasons why your character wasn't invited. The polite thing to do is ask first.
