"Yes, but I don't think in a bad way. Aren't we all a little weird?" The conversation was a wonderful distraction. Elyn was concerned about her dress, about him looking at her in the dress, and about the way dresses so easily move along ones legs like the night before. She closed her eyes, trusting him to lead her blindly through the dance.
She gently leaned forward, enjoying the comfort of their cheeks touching. He was so close and so warm. He was always warm. As he pulled away, lashes lifted up to see his expression.
"I think... I'm falling for you far too quickly." The words fell from her lips with ease. She could barely hear them though; not over the sound of her heart pounding in her head.

"Too quickly?" he asked, his expression quizzical. "I don't know if I like the sound of that." he teased. "Too quickly implies that this is wrong... It certainly doesn't feel wrong. But if it is, I'd rather you fall slow. Longer in which to have you. Elyn, I.. I don't want to be too forward, but in spite of everything, you've made me very happy. I don't think I've ever felt this way before, and if you are worried of the rush, you are not alone."
He studied her eyes in that moment, those eyes that held such truth in them. "But- I don't know if I can slow myself, much less stop myself. What do you suggest?" he offered, wanting to know her opinion, deeply he felt for her, but he couldn't deny that his thoughts seldom turned from her. This infatuation would end, wouldn't it? He didn't want that. He wanted something that took time... with her. That acknowledgement might be the moment he decided that he was going to love her one day. Sure, he wanted to travel the world with her...see every wondrous sight they good. But right now, this moment? He could see past that. Deeper.

Her laugh was gentle and affectionate. "I don't mean it's wrong." That much she was certain about "although I'm not sure if it's really right to be hidden away in a library kissing someone." She said kissing, but she meant the rest of it. The... lack of control.
Eyes widened "I don't... please don't think that I meant we should slow down. Or stop!" Her hand tightened against his. "That would be the opposite of what I want. You've made me happy as well. In all this mess you're the one thing that makes me think that maybe it will all be okay?"
"I also have never felt this way and I know you haven't either. Admittedly, I didn't know it was possible to want someone so much." Her face was red saying it out loud. "Like... being around you and stuff." Ah, there was the Elyn that fumbled with her words and tried to make herself sound more innocent.

" Hey, we were only hidden, because the gardens weren't safe," he said in joking retort. He wanted to let her know right then and there a hundred things, but instead, he managed a nod. "I understand what you mean...but er..Yes. I didn't know I could feel so compromised, yet so.." he returned the squeeze to her hand. "Right."
"But...you stay in the front of my mind all day. I've thought of the other night endlessly. I had to leave my studies in the library, the thought of it so rampant." he said his own face quite flush as well. "You know, being around you...and stuff." He shook his head a small chuckle rendered at his own self.
He had decided he wasn't sure he wanted innocent. I mean, she was what she was- but right about now he'd do anything for some guidelines. How did this work? For all the things he just knew, he really wish someone had covered having a girlfriend. Was that what she was?

Elyn had no idea what she was doing and whether it was the right thing to do or not. No one told her about this. Not even those romance novels said much besides a few lyrical poems about comparing some girls hair to sunshine and her lips to rose petals. She wasn't confused, but felt more like she was drunk anytime she was around him. She lacked all control.
"Well..." here she thought the conversation wouldn't be so bad. It was a struggle to not sound so foolish. "I just mean, earlier that is, the too quickly part... I wasn't prepared, that's all. And well... I only want to keep moving forward" She scowled. Why was this so hard? Why did she trip over her own words?
"Together, right?" She stole a glance up at him, trying to read his expression. What did he think?

He agreed, though he wondered if they were doing things pretty good then? He stopped them, they stopped wasn't that the important part? He couldn't help but smile at her words. "Yes, together. Moving forward." He dropped that conversation as quickly as he could, it seemed to be one where dwelling could do no good. He gestured towards the table, "Do you want to take a break? The song is nearly finished and I think you've proven you've known how to dance this whole time. I do think you didn't even need a teacher..."

She sort of lingered in his arms a moment after they stopped before taking a step back. "I might have over exaggerated just a little at my lack of lessons...?" She tried to hide the smile, but just looking at him had her laughing. "I'm sorry. I do rarely dance though and I'm surprised that I didn't step on you. I tend to do that." She gave a casual shrug.
"A break would be nice." She brushed some of those stubborn strands behind her ear. "I'm glad I got to dance with you though. I was horribly jealous that Verity did and I didn't." Now she was just teasing him. It was easier as the topic thankfully changed.

" I wouldn't be too cross. They are lots of things you get to do, that Verity will not." He took her hand and lead her off their little floor and towards the table of fruits and wine. " I had some concern.." he said as he released her hand but still guided her to their food with his hand at the small of her back. " Concern that your desire to learn to dance was a double entendre- it certainly seemed that way for a moment. "

Elyn chose to focus on the table instead of him. It kept her head from feeling so fuzzy. His forwardness had her laughing. She leaned against the table with the side of her hip, just enough to keep her balance. "Ardyn... what are you accusing me of? Certainly you don't think I would do such a thing?" She spoke between small fits of laughter before settling down and growing serious.
"It always starts out just wanting a dance or just wanting a kiss..." while she felt a little awkward, she couldn't deny it either. They way they spoke and looked at each other? She couldn't just lie to his face! "But no... I'm not trying to suggest more than just a dance with you."

He shook his head, his smiling causing cheeks to rise. It was a full blown grin, and while he wasn’t particularly serious, he didn’t always show such amusement. “I don’t know why you’re so serious...it was a joke. A joke hidden in some truth, at least for me… but a joke all the same.” He assured, his frame moving to the other side of the table to seize the wine, (weak of course) and pour himself a glass.
Ardyn regarded her over the table, and poured another glass for her, lifting it towards her to take. “A toast?”

Brows lifted. “I think I focus less on the joking part.” She wasn’t really all that serious, there was a playful smile on her lips. “I like the truth part.” She glanced down at the table, watching him pour the wine. For a moment, Elyn wondered if any wine, weak or not, was a good idea but she didn’t say anything.
“A toast,” she agreed, gingerly picking up the glass and holding it out in front of his. “To… Future adventures and finding light in the middle of chaos.” New Arisalon was a mess, but it would, hopefully, overcome all the chaos it had to endure. Elyn found her hope in all that mess… Lilwen and their friendship was one, but then there was Ardyn. She could have sworn the more she looked at him, the more she fell for him.

He brought his glass to hers with a shallow clink, “To being Together.” he said without a measure of smarm or snark. He could get so lost here. He felt like he had lost himself, or found himself in this summer romance. His pulse was not so quickened as before, and while want knotted up in a tight ache in his stomach, comfort was achieved in her presence. She was the source of his tension and his relaxation.
She was wonder, she was the wanderlust, she was the contentment. His young heart couldn’t remember beating quite this steady without her. It was absolutely hopeless.
Taking a drink of the wine to keep himself from gushing, he gathered his thoughts. When he had finished, his sheepish expression a bit ridiculous as he retreated behind his cup- he spoke. “So, you didn’t need to learn dancing. What are we going to learn next?”

A small sip of the wine was taken, savouring it between her lips. She made sure that her eyes never left his, although it was rather hard to do. Her mind just raced with thoughts about him. He was everywhere it was almost annoying. When she read books, when she ate dinner with her family, when she slept at night… She couldn’t remember what it was like to not think about him.
A few things came to mind at his questions, which only caused her to hide her face by taking another drink of wine. Elyn was awkward and a little naïve, but perhaps she wasn’t as innocent as some liked to believe. She knew how things worked…
After taking a drink she cleared her throat, trying not to go down a path she wouldn’t be able to get off. “Tell me… Tell me about the Raven Islands.” She needed him to talk; to do something that would keep her mind from wandering and her body from getting far too close.

He nodded at the question, considering it as he savored the wine- but the tale of his cup being nearly drained said enough. “It’s cold.” he said finally plucking up a strawberry and eating it before taking a walk around the room, never going too far- but getting some distance as he talked. “But seriously… it’s a interesting place. The architecture is simple but approaches grandiose with some of their lodges or buildings. The people are honest, forthright- almost idealistic but not in the way Silem can be. Honor is the ideal, and honor is found in most anything.”
He got comfortable on a bench at the side of the room looking over his handiwork for a moment, before looking over her. It was clear which thing held more of his attention. “You’d like the countryside. You might find the people a little… well, boring.” He said the next part with obvious derision. “ A man this, a woman this. The whole phrasing is repetitive. But sometimes, romantic in application.”
“What about you? Where did you grow up, other than here?”

She could only laugh at the way he said it. Although part of her made a mental note to bring a winter cloak should they travel there. Elyn didn't mind the cold though... it was much better than the heat in the south.
Elyn did the right thing and didn't move. At least not yet. She used him walking away as an opportunity to let her eyes wander over his form. There could have been an explosion, she was sure of it, and she wouldn't have known because she was too busy watching him.
"I've lived in a few places. I think my favourite was the temple of magic. There were so many wonderful books there and people I could finally understand. Before that I lived with my mother in a very small village with a very closed mind. People didn't like magic there. I find it kind of ironic my mother chose that village... maybe she hoped it would be enough to keep me from my birthright." She wasn't hateful as she said it, but there was a hint of bitterness.
"I think anywhere would be better than places like that."

“Maybe you only say that because you don’t know them.” he said in surprising fashion. “People fear what they don’t know- nothing is gained by disliking them or their town for it.” He said gently, not complaining at her perspective but trying to show her something else.
“They didn’t like magic on the Raven Isles either. Was considered an affront to honor, among other things. They feared it, they didn’t understand it, and what they did know of it made it particularly disliked. Sometimes that fell on me, but usually- they knew me more than they knew my magic. It won out. Maybe your old village didn’t know you?” He tried to explain before realizing he must’ve sounded stupid.
“All the same, Elyn- we won’t be going back there. Too many good things to see. What happened with the Temple of Magic?”

Elyn laughed darkly. She knew them. And they also knew her. But she chose to just shrug and understand where he was coming from. Perhaps if she did go back there, they would see her in another light. People changed...
"I'm not really sure. I assume it turned into ruins. After Shelzi stepped down as goddess, the three of us went to live somewhere else. I visited it a few times, but I'm sure now it's just abandoned or people continue to worship there. The only difference is there is no host."
She leaned back, balancing herself with her hands back on the table. She finally looked away from him to the ceiling. The whole room was beautiful... and sort of peaceful with just the two of them there.
"It's hard for me to be patient and wait. There is so much out there. I feel like I missed so much already."

“You do know you’re only seventeen, right?” He said the words with an arched brow. Her dark laughter was something new- he hadn’t seen the expression before. It hinted at pain, but also of a woman he had yet to know...perhaps she had yet to know her as well.
“You want to see the world, that makes sense. I’m in. You want adventure, I’m in. But trust me, you haven’t missed out as much as you have wonders ahead of you. Tonight is a poor suggestion of just what our lives will hold. I can’t wait to hit the road, get some miles between us and the rest of the world. We’re living in a time in which we can master anything. Please don’t rush it- even if they are things we’d both like to rush.” he said to her, patting the seat beside him.
“Where is the first place you want to go? I say we leave, as soon as the city isn’t like...burning or anything.”

This time the laugh that escaped her was from the realization that he was right. "I think it's everything that's going on. I don't dwell, but there's still a chance something bad could happen. There are too many what ifs to list."
"Not to say I don't love moments like this. In fact, I think I need more of them. It's so calm and still... it's hard to not enjoy it." She moved over to his side, taking a seat next to him. The entire time she was fully aware how close he was, how his chest slowly rose and fell with his breath.
"It's less about rushing things and more about just wanting everything." It was hard to control her thoughts and desires. "But yes... when we're sure New Arisalon isn't going to blow up, we should just pack our bags and leave." He made her excited.
Her hand reached out to rest of top of his, giving into her need of just feeling him against her.

He turned his hand upward to take her own in his, thumb running lightly over the back of her hand memorizing the sensation of skin, the texture and the curve of knuckles. His hands were larger than one might expect with his lithesome frame. Ardyn’s body was at once masculine and powerful, but in a way that was graceful- his movements fluid. He was hard to imagine being content to eat sliced beef sandwiches, read books half the day, and put flowers on the floor for someone he viewed as essentially a princess.
He would’ve been embarrassed to no small amount to know he was considered beautiful, and he surely would’ve denied it, but as he looked down at her hand he was assured in his luck. “You know.. you didn’t answer my question. Seriously, where do you want to go first?” he asked resting the back of his hand on her leg, her hand in his.
“Silem is beautiful. Fragile in a way. The Air Elementals protect it, and I think they overestimate their defense. It’s been broken before, and I think that is what makes it so stunning. Or maybe go further?”

A gentle squeeze of his hand was given, as if she needed assurance all of this is real. It was hard to believe, especially with the elaborate decorations. Elyn had trouble believing it was happening at all.
When she was young, the girl had a couple of innocent crushes. One from her home town who was more afraid of the 'witch' than anything else. To be fair, she threatened his father to tear down his house. Typical child like rebellion. She had grown so much after that, and knew that her mother trying to contain her powers was the reason she acted out. And then there was a temple staff member who Elyn usually spied on from behind her father. Nothing ever came of it. Nothing could be compared to this. She wanted to call it a crush, but it was so much more.
"Silem. After all the destruction here I want to go to a place that radiates peace." Although Silem was looked upon as weak by some, Nilsia did not rule the way her mother did. Elyn learned a little bit about the city, but she really only knew who ruled and what it offered to Tyran.
Not only was Silem big on the arts and creation, it was also farm land and countryside. No different than many other places.
"Do you have a favourite place you've been to?" The conversation was nice- the distraction working.

“ There is a little bistro on a hill in Silem. They light it up with hundreds of lamps. Little things- barely the size of a small girl’s first.” he said giving her hand another squeeze in emphasis. “The grass is so green on that hill. It smells like your outside, not in some city with such history. You can look over the city- watch it’s almost ‘sleepy bustle.’ The women wear the most elegant fashion, and the men do the same. It’s not like the Raven Islands, which is probably why I like it.”
He shrugged his shoulders lightly, leaning his head back against the wall and looking up at the chandelier above them. “They serve coffee there- lots of pastries and sweets. People come there just to ‘be-there’. No one is drunk, no one is particularly disturbed. It doesn’t get rowdy, but people sit there… in the quiet, playing games and watching the stars. Silem has some level of peacefulness that I don’t think you can find elsewhere.” He mused over that last thought before frowning.
“Then again- it has changed since the Pantheon changed. I don’t lend much belief to the gods...never had reason. I don’t imagine you do either, since your Stepmom and your Grandfather have been them. But without something to ‘defend’ peace… It is almost certain that war will come to Silem.” It was a serious thought, one that showed just that, thought. It was a concern of him- that New Arisalon was becoming so ‘friendly.’ Scholars had thought that Arc’s softer heart had affected his armies and theirs. The current mood only reminded the world that Arc was dead.

“Then we should go there first!” She was excited just by the way he spoke about it. Her mind tried to imagine it- a peaceful place. While she understood that no city was perfect, she liked the ideals that Silem strived for. The idea that people could work together and not suffer. Although… all it took was a single enemy to destroy that peace.
“Maybe they will be lucky. I mean, my grandfather… He got involved in a lot. House Zadkiel and House Ravencourt doesn’t really get involved much in anything. Except that one war…” She tapped her finger against her lips, trying to recall it. Elyn wasn’t a political person… She had no intention of keeping up with New Arisalon’s politics, no desire to join Laelia in the army… Ardyn may have viewed her as some sort of princess, but she prefered to not be involved. “I suppose that just means we really should make Silem our first stop. Just in case a war happens…..” At least if there was another one, they weren’t obligated to be involved.
“Isn’t the Duchess the daughter of a goddess? I heard she reached out my family to strike up trade and have support since their military isn’t very large. If I had to be honest, I think of the Kaliba’s wanted to they could take the city as their own…”
The moment was so beautiful and simple, Elyn never wanted it to end. “Yes… Silem seems perfect. The rest… can wait.” She didn’t want to plan their adventure too much. The idea that they could wake up one morning and just leave…. What an adventure. Caught up in her thoughts, Elyn leaned against him and rested her head against his shoulder.
“Thank you, Ardyn. For teaching me how to dance.” It was half a joke, considering she did already know how to. But he taught her a lot of things.

He turned his head to face her and pressed his lips against the top of her head. “It's been my pleasure, Elyn.”
He pondered her words and nodded. “Yes, though… The Duchess is the daughter of a goddess- but I don’t know how strong those ties are. I think something about Divinity makes you aloof. Distant. Most power does.” He said thoughtfully. “You make a good point. I’m pretty sure that had always been the rumor, The Raven Islands wouldn’t of been liberated without the Kaliba blockade- and Silem has been a protectorate as far as New Arisalon is concerned. I doubt Silem views their relation that close, but the reality is they depend on New Arisalon for protection… If you recognize that some of the royal guard has members of the old Kaliba army, to say nothing of the Tyran army… I think it’s fair to say they have their fingers everywhere. When you think about it...It’s kind of weird.”

The moment was sweet, it was comforting and kind… but there was something that Elyn couldn’t stop thinking about. Her head titled back after the kiss so that her eyes could meet with his. The hand that didn’t hold his reached out to touch the side of his face affectionately.
“You know, it is really weird. My family is kind of creepy too… they know a lot. Trying to keep up with them all is a challenge!” She grinned.

His lips turned up in a small smile, a bemused expression. It was an odd moment of affection that felt natural. Normal. He doubted that he’d ever get entirely used to it. Her soft touch had him almost losing his train of thought. “Yeah, it’s almost like your grandfather was planning to take it all. You know. Reign had me read Histories of the Empire- I mean, after a certain point Arisalon stopped overtures of peace entirely. The assimilated civilizations, took their cultural boons and infused Arisalonian culture to supplement it. I mean, until the collapse...It was all great. But I mean… do you think that’s what it is?” He trailed off in the thought any substantive questions were lost not long after he realized that she was grinning, and her eyes were shining, reflecting the chandeliers dimly lit globes above.

The history talk reminded her of her father. As much as she loved him, he was the last thing on her mind at the moment. Instead, she was too busy watching the way Ardyn’s lips moved when he spoke. Had she not felt her heart beating out of her chest for the boy, she might have hated him. Even the way he spoke was perfect!
“Ardyn….” She bit her lower lip in thought. “As much as I love our conversation, I’m not really interested in talking about my family history.”

“I’m not so sure I am either. But there is just...well. I just wonder. It doesn’t matter. The history isn’t important. The future is.” He said moving a little further away. “ I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Uh.. I’ll avoid the topic.” He did eventually return closer, his eyes seeking her own as he reached out his own free hand it resting just where there hands had rested on her leg, as his hand drew hers between them but out of the way.
“Do you want to dance some more?” he asked, “I’d hate to put that gown to waste.”

He made her laugh often and now was no different. "If there was a point, I am sorry. It's just hard to... keep track. Especially with all of this." She gestured to the Great Hall with a nod of her head. "You've really outdone yourself." She seemed to have no issues giving him praise any moment she could. Although she was thankful she had something else to talk about besides thinking about the way he looked and spoke.
She suddenly remembered the fancy gown she chose to wear and looked down at it. She let go of him to play with the material. "I agree." With her hand in his, she lifted herself to her feet. Any excuse to be close to him.

He lead her out to the floor upon a different song, livelier and more challenging. Eros and the cities across the sea had far more intriguing dances- most of them making way to Silem or New Arisalon, cities with culture. It was sad that some of that culture was being traded for militaristic zeal, but it was the price one paid.
This time, he did not concentrate so much on leading her but dancing with her. It lead to a much more enjoyable time at least for him, and he’d wager for her. Each step was taken with just enough pause for her to follow, and his graceful execution was more sensual than the waltz despite it’s close stance would allow. The steps carried them with poise, and his gaze drew deeply from her own. While the waltz had been quite elegant, the tango was something different- this early form of the dance more in line with gypsies than any nobility. This time he did not burden it with words, instead it was far better to simply enjoy the way bodies could brush against each other in innocent movement but with less than innocent meaning. Dance allowed expression that words simply could not. Here was a place where awkwardness went to die. At least when you’re alone in your own little world.
